As we begin 2014 my hope is that this year will be one of new possibilities and growth.
Reflecting on the accomplishments we have made, it is amazing all that has been done in just a few years. The building of the grotto to honor Our Lady, a new art center to nurture student creativity, remodeling the chapel to expand our worship space, new roof on the Holy Cross center, artificial turf for our football field, the Burke Scholars classroom, updating the cafeteria to better serve our students, new seating for the little theater, technology upgrades, resurfacing the parking lot, cleanup and recovery from the Spring floods, installation of an elevator for our handicapped students, and iPad implementation for students and faculty.
Your generosity has made this all possible and we are all so very grateful, especially to the young men of Notre Dame College Prep. This is your school where you have made a difference, please always feel free to stop by and say hello. Moving forward I ask for your kindness, support and particularly your prayers as this remarkable journey continues; striving to make Notre Dame College Prep the premiere Catholic high school experience for young men of the Chicagoland area. Through Our Lady, Notre Dame, One winner will take home $10,000 in cash from the Dons & Dames Dinner Auction Raffle! Tickets are one for $5.00 or a book of six for $25.00. Winner need not be present. Cover Story Dons Soar With Inclusive, Diverse Academic Programs by Teresa Connelly
Notre Dame College Prep is proud of its inclusive and diverse academic programs. Whether a student is academically gifted or needs additional assistance, he can soar at NDCP. As a private school, we have the ability to be selective in our admissions process. However, it has always been important that Notre Dame provide an education for as many students as possible. Time and again I hear from parents that having a Catholic education is their number one priority. But they also want to know that we have high quality academic programs that range from students who are gifted to those who need additional academic support. Families are happy to know that just about any student fits in here, and brothers can attend here knowing that, no matter their academic level, they will get an excellent education, says Principal Dan Tully 94. The instructional program has distinct levels of challenge: Hesburgh Scholars Program, College Prep Core Program, St. Andre Scholars Program, and the Burke Scholars Program. Each level is designed for students to be accepted to college. Rigorous courses are tailored to provide challenging educational experiences for each student within the context of the Mission of the school. MISSION STATEMENT: Under the patronage of Mary, Notre Dame College Prep is a secondary school committed to educating young men to be gentlemen of faith, scholarship, and service in an inclusive, family oriented community. Faithful to the Roman Catholic tradition and inspired by Gospel values, we prepare students to be lifelong learners and to lead lives of integrity. We offer a great diversity of courses which allows each student to get a tailored academic experience. While our courses are challenging, each student gets attention from his teachers and counselors. Our new iPad program has allowed student creativity and discovery to dovetail with academic rigor and challenge over the last year. We look forward to continuing to make progress in this area, says Tully. of what program he is in, include 24 credits: 4.0 Religion; 4.0 English; 3.0 Mathematics; 3.0 Lab Sciences; 2.0 Foreign Language; 3.0 Social Studies; 0.5 Fine and Performing Arts; 0.5 Computer Literacy; 2.0 Physical Education/Health. For details about NDCPs curriculum, visit www.nddons.org/curriculum. Its a challenge to fit all of the academic requirements into our schedule, but in the end, we know our students are not only good students, but Gentlemen. This is something that most schools cant claim, says Tully. Students can also earn college credit via the St. Marys Universitys PACC Program and 12 Advanced Placement courses. Giving students a chance at achieving college credit gives them an opportunity to look at potential career paths and also to possibly save them money. Each credit they can accrue here through our dual credit and Advanced Placement program saves them hundreds if not thousands of dollars at the college or university they attend, says Tully. Despite having a variety of academic abilities, nearly 98% of all students go on to college. The average ACT score is 23.2 which is exactly two points higher than the most recently recorded national average available. We have a number of support mechanisms in place for students so that their academic abilities are maximized. Whether it is an Advanced Placement course or honors course or specially tailored study hall, Notre Dame provides many different opportunities to support student growth, says Tully.
Notre Dame College Prep has 65 teachers with the average teacher having ten-plus years of experience. Some 73% have Masters degrees and 14% are working towards obtaining their Masters degree. Teacher professional training is ongoing and extensive. One area for ongoing training is the use of the Apple iPad in the classrooms. This year, each freshman through junior student was required to have an iPad for his assignments and to create projects. Getting an iPad was optional for seniors. Each teacher also uses an iPad for classroom work, taking attendance, collecting assignments or offering new methods of student assessments through technology. While beneficial for 21st century education, integrating technology is expensive. Were proud of the infrastructure weve developed, but we know that it will continue to be costly to upkeep and develop our access. The changing world of technology and education is hard to keep up with, but the costs are also dramatic, says Tully. We are fortunate to have such great friends, families, and benefactors, who are generous to Notre Dame. While ND families are asked to pay a significant amount in tuition, it still doesnt cover what it costs to educate each student. Weve been able to bring in significant dollars to make up the difference, but there is still much more to do, said Tully.
The Holy Cross charism that Notre Dame was founded upon always reminds us that we educate the Mind, but never at the expense of the Heart. We are preparing our students for college, but also for heaven. This means that academics are a priority, but the spiritual and moral formation of these young men is co-equal. Our teachers, coaches and counselors listen and care. Additionally, Notre Dame is committed to providing a number of co-curricular opportunities to students so that they may shine in athletics, the arts, clubs or media, says Tully. The graduation requirements for each student, regardless
Admission to the St. Andre Scholars Program is based mainly on an evaluation of the students entrance exam and grade school class work. Some students are also placed in the program based on their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan (Psycho-Educational Evaluation) which is medically based. Sometimes placement occurs after a student comes to NDCP based on the recommendations of counselors and teachers. Incoming freshmen who have been recommended for the St. Andre Scholars Program are required to take a four week bridge program to formulate a smooth transition into the NDCP community; to make final course placement for freshman year; and determine the level of academic support needed. There are currently 230 students who utilize the St. Andre Program. During their freshman, sophomore and junior years these students may take courses specifically designed for St. Andre students. They also use St. Andre Scholars Study Hall where they receive additional assistance and other accommodations. The staff consists of nine teachers who work either full or part-time to assist students throughout the day. We have a lot of students who come in for support because they need help and they know were here, says Amy Jo Rehder, Director of the St. Andre Scholars Program. The St. Andre Scholars Program is really part of Notre Dames mission. Were an inclusive school and the Andre Program lives that every day, says Rehder. Parents and students are so incredibly grateful for the help. They are grateful for a place to send their sons which is why the St. Andre Scholars Program is so important for Notre Dame and the population in the area, Rehder adds. The Burke Scholars Program was started in 2009 with one student and now has ten students with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities including those with Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, or other learning differences. Notre Dame is the first Catholic School in the Chicago Archdiocese, and one of about a dozen in the United States, to have such a program at the high school level.
Des Plaines Mayor Matthew Bogusz 05 addressed the Hesburgh Scholars in November 2013.
A Hesburgh Scholar is a student who has the intrinsic motivation, maturity, and potential to successfully take the most challenging curriculum Notre Dame offers each of his four years of high school. He has the desire to be a leader among his peers and to contribute to the Notre Dame community through service, leadership, and co-curricular activities, says Shelby Walchuk, Director of the Program. The St. Andre Scholars Program is named for St. Andre Bessette, C.S.C. It is a college preparatory program for students requiring assistance in achieving academic success. This transitional program helps at-risk students adjust to the first two years of high school and deal more effectively with the work and expectations of their final two years at NDCP while preparing for college. The program provides one-on-one tutoring, small group instruction, and St. Andre Scholars classes specifically geared towards these students.
To be admitted, students must be in 8th grade and at least 14 years old. They must be proficient in English and Math between the 2nd and 5th grade levels and able to participate in an inclusion environment successfully without the use of a paraprofessional. They must also be able to communicate through verbal and written expression, to follow high behavioral expectations, and to interact appropriately with peers. Burke Scholars students are mainstreamed in classes where possible. They are paired with Burke Buddies who are students who buddy with Burke Scholar students in the classroom and other activities both during and after school. My hope for the students in the Burke Scholars Program is that they become an integral part of the Notre Dame family. I want to educate them the best we can within a Catholic high school setting. I hope that they feel happy, safe, welcomed, and accepted. I hope to educate them with in a way that will help them to be as successful as possible after high school, says Leandra Smith, Director of the Burke Scholars Program. Principal Dan Tully (right) and Assistant Principal for Academics Scott Dutton (left) congratulated Attendance Officer Maureen Karlowicz who received the Archdiocese of Chicagos Distinguished Service Award on February 23.
Over her time at Notre Dame she has also served as the Assistant Dean. Mrs. Karlowicz is probably better known for her roles as nurse, friend, cheerleader, counselor, coach, mentor, colleague, and mom to every member of the Notre Dame community in some way or another, said Principal Dan Tully 94. Mrs. Karlowicz is the mother of two Notre Dame alumni, Christopher 00 and Kevin 06. Her husband Glen Karlowicz is a tremendous presence at Notre Dame as well, frequently seen helping on the football chain gang, in the concession stand, or chaperoning dances. Mrs. Karlowiczs friendly face and welcoming presence helps spread the Notre Dame Mission. She loves every student as if he is her own. Youre bound to see her at almost any Notre Dame event, cheering on the Dons and supporting the students she has come to know, added Tully. The Distinguished Service Award was formerly known as the Heart of the School Award. 32 winners were selected in 2014 from over 250 schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Mrs. Karlowicz and the other winners were honored at a recognition dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel in Oak Brook on February 23.
(left to right) Mike Littau 14, Michael Prostran 14 and Steven Nowotarski 14 have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.

In Japan, the school year is split into trimesters and I am into the second term now. We had sports day in which the whole school competes in track and field-like events. Its always a good time. I also read in Legacy about the accolades of the Speech team. At my school here, Speech is my club. Its year round, but autumn is the busiest time since we have quite a few competitions. Hopefully we will do as well as we have in the past with many first-, second- and third-place finishes. Its hard work but rewarding and the students really enjoy it. Quote of the night, I cant believe I ate the whole thing. - Joe Burke Mike Ugel 97 Donates Award to Burke Scholars Program
Every year, Charter One|RBS Citizens recognizes one colleague who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service in the community. Through this recognition, the winning colleague is able to designate $2,500 to the nonprofit/program of their choice. This award is made possible through the Citizens Helping Citizens Volunteer Initiative. This year, Class of 1997 alumnus Michael Ugel, Regional Branch Manager was selected as the company winner and designated the Burke Scholars Program as the $2,500 beneficiary. Growing up in Niles, I attended school at St. John Brebeuf and Notre Dame. Both schools were instrumental in my development and stressed the importance of giving back to the community. My mom has provided further inspiration by participating in the GLADD program for the developmentally disabled at St. John Brebeuf since it began over 40 years ago. My wife and I followed suit and have had the pleasure of knowing several of the Burkes Scholars through GLADD. These young men are truly inspirational and I couldnt be more proud to give back to a program that provides them with a community and first class education. I am thankful that the Charter One Foundation is equally invested in giving back to the community and provided me the opportunity to do so as a recipient of the Citizens Helping Citizens Volunteer Award! Thank you, said Mike Ugel.
