Gasland Reflection What is this movie about?

A man named Josh Fox travels around Eastern United States to find out what happens to the people and the daily lives of people being exposed by fracking. It all started, because his land was leased for a fracking site, he knew that it would contaminate the waters so he declined. Following that, he went to places such like Texas, Wyoming and Texas. He went to find what type of harm it does to people and animals drinking the contaminated water. He also went to find out what types of chemicals were in the contaminated water and ended with saying that this is land for the public, and it shouldn't be used for private uses like fracking.

38. John Hanger, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection describes the natural gas drilling and extraction as a trade-off. Explain what the trade-off is. Do you believe this is a good trade? Natural gas is often described as a transition fuel and a cleaner-burning fossil fuel. Explain how these claims are incomplete. Given what you learned from this movie, is natural gas a fuel that we should explore and extract more of? No, it isn't a good trade, because it can still harm people, even if they don't have to pay for the energy. The claims are incomplete because they dont say that natural gases are harmful also. We shouldn't explore more natural gas because the more gases, the more harm it can cause to the living organisms around them and our environment. 39. The Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals (FRAC) Act proposes to include hydraulic fracturing as an activity regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This law would require the industry to disclose all chemicals used in fracking. Do you think this law is fair and justified? Why might the gas drilling companies oppose this law? Explain your answer. The law is fair and justified, because fracking contaminates water and the Safe Drinking Water Act is used to regulate and to protect from water that is polluted and contaminated. Companies might oppose this law, because if the people find out that there if a lot of chemicals in use, they might reconsider and decide not to lease because they are afraid that the chemicals might harm them. 40. This is a map of Pennsylvania, showing the major rivers and the towns of Dimock and Milanville. How would contamination of the water supply have consequences for the entire eastern part of the state, including Philadelphia?

The contaminated water could flow down the rivers. The rivers that flow east bring the contaminated water to the East. 41. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has released a statement explaining several inaccuracies it feels that the documentary portrays. The statement is available here: http://cogcc.state.co.us/library/GASLAND%20DOC.pdf Briefly describe their statement on the following: The Weld County Wells: The water supply of Mike Markham, Renee McClure, and Aimee Ellsworth that was allegedly said to have been contaminated by fracking, actually biogenic gas. This gas could have come from fracking, but on the Gasland website it doesn't suggest that the biogenic gas came from fracking. The West Divide Creek Seeps: Gassland claimed that the West Divide Creek Seeps were caused by hydraulic fracking. After investigation, it was said that the gas migrating up a gas well borehole that wasn't properly cemented. The gas collected from the seep was concluded to be thermo genic. 42. If you owned a large parcel of land in the shale area, and were offered several thousand dollars per acre to lease the land for gas drilling, would you take the money? Explain your decision. I wouldn't take the money because I do not want my waters to be contaminated. I wouldn't want to get a lot of money just to find out my choice would harm me in the future. I wouldnt want to have the people around me be involved in a situation that isnt safe.
