Catch Me If You Can Unit Plan

ELA 20-2 ! Mar. 3rd - Apr.16th ! Miss Tarnowski ! Kate Andrews HS Novel Study Unit

I. Overview and Rationale

!
The 20-2 English Language Arts class at Kate Andrews High school is studying various texts under the broad thematic umbrella Crime and Criminology. As a part of this topic of study, the 20-2 class will be doing a novel study on Catch Me If You Can by Frank W. Abagnale with Stan Redding. This novel is based on the true story of a real fake, Frank W. Abagnale who was famously known as the Skywayman. Abagnale swindled banks, businesses, hotels and airlines out of millions of dollars in forged checks and all before the age of 21. Abagnales strange and hilarious life story touches on many themes that are relevant and interesting to young students and his tale will cause young scholars to question the moral, legal and social implications of living a life under the dark side of the law. Students will be called to question the meaning of justice and will have to decide whether Abagnale is simply a fiend, a villain and an anti-hero, or whether Frank is more akin to a modern day Robin Hood; taking from Big Bad Business and giving to himself. Themes explored in Catch Me If You Can: living larger than life, the power of dreams and taking chances, the power of self-construction and self-determination, social justice, morality and ethics, criminality and deviance, the power of big business, the allure of money and the fast life, and the individual versus society. All of these themes developed within the novel Catch Me If You Can" are very relevant to todays student, despite the plot taking place in the 1950s era (between 1948 -1969). Abagnale perpetrated his larger than life criminal proceedings all between the ages of 16 -21. The power, vivacity, tenacity and sheer magnitude of what Abagnale accomplished in his youth is impressive even if his intentions were suspect (alright, downright immoral). Abagnale shows students that just because they are young does NOT mean that they are powerless. His exploits show students that they are the only person who can limit what they can accomplish in life. The novels shows that even the law can be circumvented if one is persistent enough, (and if one is lacking a moral compass like the protagonist Frank Abagnale). The power of the individual and the power of self-confidence are the central themes that we will use this novel to explore. Content will be presented in a combination of teacher directed mini lectures, class discussions, reading and working in small assigned reading groups and listening to the audiobook. Students will have daily class work time with their assigned reading groups to read the novel and work in their Little Black Logbook learning logs which will include daily assigned activities like character sketches, reading comprehension questions, personal response questions, vocabulary etc. Students will self-evaluate their participation in in-class discussions, their work in their Little Black Logbooks and their effort in the class. Reading quizzes will be used to support student self-accountability. Students will have the chance to work collaboratively on two major creative projects: creating a Fakebook profile and a Women Tell All TV dramatic skit. Students will have the option to work alone or work in partners to create the Fakebook profile for Frank Abagnale. Students will work in small groups to produce and present a skit version of the infamous The Bachelor Women Tell All episode based on the characters and relationships from Catch Me If You Can. Summative assessments will be a summative Unit Test (comprised of questions from the daily reading comp and vocabulary as well as a few new deeper thinking questions) and an In-Class Essay (following Writers Workshops). To conclude the unit we will be watching The Dreamworks film version of Catch Me If You Can by Steven Spielberg.

V. Essential Questions
" " Why do we read stories? In what ways are stories like or unlike our lives? Catch Me If You Can explores the possibilities of achieving or creating a new identity. The opening line of the novel says, A mans alter ego is nothing more than his favorite image of himself (Abagnale, 1). What does this quotation and the novel as a whole suggest about the nature of identity? What are the connections between crime, morality and justice? How can you apply your beliefs about these big ideas to your own life? What does the character Frank Abagnale suggest about living larger than life? What does the novel suggest about how to live a fulfilling and satisfying life? How do you think individuals can find happiness and fulfillment in life and why is this important? Is Frank Abagnale a fiend, a villain an anti-hero or none of the above? Do you see Frank as a modern day Robin Hood; taking from Big Bad Business and giving to himself? Why or why not? What do you like and dislike about Frank Abagnales character? Are there things that Frank is/says/does that you would try to emulate in your life? Are there things that you disagree with that Frank is/says/does and how would you avoid bringing these things in to your life? Can we blame Frank for being who he is and doing what he does, or is he doomed to make these mistakes (due to family situation, personality etc.). To what extent do individuals have control over their actions and the free will to determine their life choices and life trajectory (path)? Does money make people happy? Hoe much power does money have over people? How much power does Big Business have over people? How much power do Corporations have over people? Why do people lead lives of crime? Do they choose to be bad or are they naturally bad and/or destined / predispositioned to make bad life choices? Why is self-confidence important? What can you achieve if you set your mind to it? Why should we dream big and / or Fake it Till You Make it? Is there danger in leading a double life or do all people do this to some extent?
