January-April, 2014 Professional Semester 3

Kayla Marra Professional Growth Plan: PS3

Goal #1 (Guiding Question): To what extent does the Daily Five impact student engagement and competency in literacy? (KSA #3, #4, #5, #7) Rationale: Having never taught English Language Arts, I am interested in learning a variety of strategies for teaching this disciplinary stream. Because so many teachers (along with my mentor teacher) have implemented the Daily Five into their classrooms, I would like to learn more about how the Daily Five works in terms of daily routines and assessment. I am also curious how students feel about the Daily Five, therefore examining student engagement in learning and their likes and dislikes are important to me. Completion Deadline: April 1, 2014 Strategies to Achieve Goal Read about Daily Five teaching strategies and gather resources Observe Daily Five in action the first two to three days of school Start teaching using Daily Five routines and assessment methods Using the Daily Five assessments, determine students who I can use for study purpose (4 high performing, 4 mid-range, and 4 lower performing students). These students will be used for me to observe more closely what impacts their engagement levels and what they like and dislike about the Daily Five routines. Observe and track students competency levels in all literacy areas (word work, reading, writing) During second half of practicum (when I will be teaching the afternoon classes), observe Daily Five in action and continue to note student engagement and competencies Observe other teachers not using Daily Five and ask them what strategies they feel work best at the elementary level Interview students in each study group and ask what they like/dislike about Daily 5 (video tape) Approximate Timeline Prior to January 6 January 6-8 January 9- March 1

Goal #2 (Guiding Question): In what ways does maintaining open lines of communication with parents of my students positively contribute to student learning? (KSA #12) Rationale: It is very important to find ways to communicate and actively engage parents in their childrens learning. I want to develop a means to communicate with parents on an ongoing basis on what their children will be doing in the classroom and encourage parents to contact me with any questions they may have. I believe this is important for children to be successful in school. Completion Deadline: Ongoing (January- April 2013)

Strategies to Achieve Goal Introduce myself to parents through email and encourage parents to email me at any time with any questions, comments or concerns they may have. Contribute to monthly newsletter home, which will outline what I am doing with students in each subject I am teaching for that month. Create a survey for parents to fill out regarding how they felt my communication with them was throughout my Internship. Ask questions such as: What did I do well and what could I improve on in terms of communication with parents? In your opinion, how important is it for teachers to be actively informing parents about what their children are learning in school? In what ways do you communication between teachers and parents impact your childs learning?
