Made: Juan Guilanya A WELL DONE JOB

Dec/12/2013

A well done job includes the study of a problem and the presentation of a solution, in a way that your boss only has to give his approval or disapproval of the "complete study". The words "complete study" are underlined; because, the more difficult is a problem, the more likely that the solution is presented it in fragmented form. You are responsible for developing the details, difficult as they may be, and check them with other people susceptible to know and to focus the problem from another angle. The tendency to ask your boss what you should do appears frequently when the problem is difficult. It often seems easier to ask your boss what to do, and it seems so easy for him to answer. In fact, it is you the competent to tell your boss what should be done and not to ask him what you should do. He needs answers, not questions. Your job is to study, write, re-study and re-write, to propose an action - the best of all that you have considered. Your boss can then give his approval or not. Don't burden your boss, with long exposures oral or written. To write a note to your boss does not normally constitute an enough well done job; but, to write a note for his signature which he will send to a third party - is. Your point of view must be presented in such a way, that your boss needs only to express his agreement, by stamping his signature. The theory of "a well done job" does not prevent the preparation of a draft, but the draft must not consist only of an idea in the air. It should be complete in its essential relationships, except that it is not ready for distribution and that its presentation has not been especially cared. A draft project must not be used, however, as an excuse to leave to your boss the burden of its final completion. The theory of "a well done job" may have as a result to give more work to the individual, but protects his boss against the ideas in the air, the memos which are little comprehensible and the insufficiently mature oral presentations. On the other hand, the individual who has a really good idea to "sell" has, thus, more chances to find a market. This is the final test for a well done job: if you were the boss, would you sign the paper that you have prepared, and would you risk your reputation on its accuracy?. If the answer is no, retake the study and work on it, because it is not yet a "well done job". Taken from: Industrial Engineering, P & G
