First Lady Mary Pat Christie Honors Purple R.E.I.G.N. Founder Asia D. Smith as a New Jersey Hero for Empowering Survivors of Domestic Abuse
For Immediate Release Contact: Michael Drewniak Wednesday, March 27, 2013 Kevin Roberts 609-777-2600 Trenton, NJ First Lady Mary Pat Christie named Asia D. Smith her 19 New Jersey Hero for her commitment to make a difference in the lives of domestic abuse survivors. As a survivor of domestic violence, Asia is a powerful example that anyone can be a victim and there is life beyond abuse. As founder and CEO of Purple R.E.I.G.N, a non-profit advocacy agency specializing in programs and services for those impacted by physical and sexual assault, she works daily to heal and empower victims, especially those in underserved communities. Asia has such a compelling story - one of tragedy, triumph and hope, said Mrs. Christie. She has overcome perilous acts of domestic violence that no individual should have to endure. In doing so, Asia has become a role model for other survivors and I am so inspired by the work she and her organization, Purple R.E.I.G.N., are doing in the community to educate and empower the lives of so many victims. I am proud to name Asia Smith a New Jersey Hero. Purple R.E.I.G.N. Social Services, which operates in partnership with the Bessie Mae Womens Health Center in East Orange, provides a comprehensive range of services that includes: preventative strategies, crisis intervention counseling, advocacy, educational workshops, training classes, safety planning, resources/ transitional services, referrals, restraining orders, and assessments. I am honored beyond words to receive the New Jersey Heroes award on behalf of the more than one billion victims globally, and on behalf of an incredible aunt that I never had the opportunity to know, because at the age of 24, she was viciously attacked as she left work and murdered by her estranged husband, said Asia Smith. Today, I proudly accept this award on behalf of the millions of tenacious advocates and survivors who vigorously fight domestic violence and sexual assault every waking moment of their lives. I also accept this award on behalf of myself for having the courage to take the most horrific experiences of my life and not only overcome them, but use them as fuel to help others globally do what Ive done: turn tragedy to triumph.

April is National STD Awareness Month

Many are not aware but sexually transmitted diseases (STD), also referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STI) and venereal diseases (VD), are illnesses that have a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. April is National STD Awareness Month and while in the past, these illnesses have mostly been referred to as STDs or VD, in recent years the term sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been preferred, as it has a broader range of meaning. Did you know that a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without having a disease? Did you know that some STIs can also be transmitted via the use of IV drug needles after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding? Studies show that sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years. Until the 1990s, STIs were commonly known as venereal diseases. Veneris is the Latin genitive form of the name Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Social disease was another euphemism. Sexually transmitted infection is a broader term than sexually transmitted disease. (Continued on page 6).

Ms. Safanya N. Searcy Politics & Government

"Anytime you are facing adversity

or trials, the first line of defense needs to be in your mind. If you allow fear to come in and take root in your thinking, it becomes a stronghold that affects every part of you. But when thoughts of fear come, you dont have to 'sign for the package,' so to speak. Instead of activating fear by meditating on it, believing it and speaking it, you can turn things around and activate faith. How do you activate faith? Hebrews tells us that the Word of God is living and active, sharper than a double-edged sword, able to divide soul and spirit. When the enemy tried to tempt Jesus, He gave us the example of how to respond. He said, 'It Is Written!'

Instead of going through the day worried, thinking about how its not going to work out, start meditating on what God says. Activate faith by speaking the Word of God. Let it sink down inside of you and transform your being. Always remember, His Word is alive, His Word is truth, His Word is your weapon. So take hold of His promises and find where it is written!" -Joel Osteen. Let's set those goals for this week & tackle them head on!!! Safanya is an extraordinary young woman whose background in politics and government has made her one of the most well known African American leaders in the State of New Jersey. She is a product of Leadership Newark where she developed and created her circle of colleagues who also have gone on to prominent leadership positions throughout the State of NJ. She domi-

nates the scene wherever she goes! Safanya grew up in Newark and has served the Essex County community for many years. She has also worked on the State level under the former Governor Jon Corzines Administration. This woman is truly a trailblazer who is paving the way daily for other young women. She is a well respected assertive woman who consistently work to help others fulfill their destiny. She is a positive role model and understands the importance of health and wellness in the community. The Bessie Mae Womens Health Center applaud her tenacity and diligence to create a better tomorrow for our urban youth.

An infection is a colonization by a parasitic species, which may not cause any adverse effects. In a disease the infection leads to impaired or abnormal function. In either case, the condition may not exhibit signs or symptoms. Increased understanding of infections like HPV, which infects most sexually active individuals but cause disease in only a few has led to increased use of the term STI.
