A war survivors description of the situation in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation
The Japanese soldiers were everywhere; at every street corner, there were a couple of
Japanese standing guard. They just kept a watch on people. If they found somebody, any
suspicious-looking people, they would sometimes stop them and ask them for their identity.
After going around and seeing things for ourselves, we thought it better, safer to stay at
home.
