Unit 1 Linear Systems

A linear system are two or more equations with two variables that are considered at the same time. To solve a linear system means to find the POI (point of intersection) which is the point on which the two lines cross. Solving linear systems in important in cases where you are given a problem described in words or represented by a linear system. There are also equivalent linear equations which have the same graph and solution but are either multiplied or divided by a number. To solve a linear system, there are three methods: method of substitution, method of elimination, method of graphing. When solving problems, you must choose the one which would make the most sense. Here is how to use each one:

Method of Substitution
1. Firstly, you must label the linear equations of the lines and 2. Next, you need to solve one of the equations for one variable in terms of the other variable. . You have the choice on what variable to isolate. It is better to isolate the variable which would take the least amount of work (ex. If you want to isolate for a variable in an equation, you must see which one would be the least amount of work. In equation , x is multiplied by 2 and the y is negative. In equation , the x is multiplied by 4 and the y is positive. Isolating the y in equation would take the least amount of steps.). 3. Next, you must substitute the expression from step 1 into the other equation and solve for the remaining variable 4. Next, you must substitute the variable for which you just solved for back into one of the original equations to find the value of the other variable 5. You should now have your two variables solved. This is the point of intersection. 6. Check by substituting your two points into both linear equations. If the left side of the equation equals the right side, you have successfully solved the linear system. 7. Then you write a concluding sentence (ex. The solution to the linear system is x=4, y=6).

Method of Elimination
1. Firstly, you must label the linear equations of the lines and 2. Next, you must choose the variable you wish to eliminate and would require the least amount of steps 3. Next, if necessary, you must multiply one or both equations by a value so that they have the same opposite coefficient in front of the variable you want to eliminate 4. Next, you must add or subtract (as needed) to eliminate one variable 5. You then need to solve for the remaining variable. 6. Next, you must substitute the variable for which you just solved for into one of the original equations to find the value of the other variable 7. You should now have your two variables solved. This is the point of intersection. 8. Check by substituting your two points into both linear equations. If the left side of the equation equals the right side, you have successfully solved the linear system. 9. Then you write a concluding sentence (ex. The solution to the linear system is x=4, y=6).

Method of Graphing
1. You can graph by graphing using the slope and y-intercept A. You must rearrange the linear equations in the form of y=mx+b B. Graph and label the two lines C. Find the POI of the two lines on the graph D. Check E. Finally, write a concluding sentence 2. Graph using the intercepts A. First, you must find the intercepts for each line B. Graph the intercepts C. Find the POI of the two lines on the graph D. Check E. Finally, write a concluding sentence
