Air Solenoids
This information contains details for Air Solenoid applications in VN/VHD vehicles from build date 11.2002. NOTE: Information is subject to change without notice. Illustrations are used for reference only and may differ slightly from the actual vehicle being serviced. However, key components addressed in this information are represented as accurately as possible.

There are up to two solenoid packs, depending on the number of air operated devices. Each Solenoid pack can hold up to 5 solenoids and is of modular construction. The backing plate which holds the solenoids contains and air manifold for the air supply. The backing plate also contains the 8way electrical connector for the solenoid pack. The solenoid installation determines which terminals in the electrical connector activates the solenoid. Unused solenoid positions are covered with blank plates. All solenoids block air when not engaged and pass air when engaged. As noted in the illustration below, two of the solenoids are wired independently and the remaining three share a common ground. For further electrical information refer to VN, VHD VERSION2 Electrical Schematics. Electrical specications for the air solenoids are as follows:

On the second generation of the VN/VHD functions, that have been traditionally controlled with pneumatic switches in the dashboard, will now be controlled electronically with the uses of solenoid valves. The number and conguration of valves attached to the base plate will vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on the available options. The primary base plate will always be one unit regardless whether it is a VN or VHD model. However, during some rare cases there will be a second valve package mounted directly under the primary pack. There are currently ve different methods of populating the solenoid valve referred to in the table below.
