Standard 9: Professional learning and Ethical Practice

Artifact: Cultural Identity map Course: ED284-Multicultural Education The Cultural Identity Map that I completed in my Multicultural Education course provides evidence that I have met Hawaii Teacher Standards Boards: Standard 9, Professional Learning and Ethical Practice. For the Identity map I was required to make a creative visual presentation of my personal identity. There were some very specific questions that I needed to answer and also some areas where I could be inventive. I also was able to choose the format in which I shared this information. I began this process by answering the questions about myself, my ethnicity, any group to which I belonged, and even things I was passionate about. I shared a bit of information about my travel experiences. I talked about people that influence my life and choices I have made in my past. I described how all of this contributed to my personal identity. Then I created a web-based presentation with software called Prezi, to make it interesting for my peers. I have chosen this artifact for standard 9, Professional Learning and Ethical Practice because I believe it best represents my ability to, reflect on my personal biases and exhibits that I can accesses resources to deepen my own understanding of cultural, ethnic, gender, and learning differences to build stronger relationships and create more relevant learning experiences 9(e). I have found that the contributors listed above can influence teachers choices in the classroom. I feel that though the experiences I have do not necessarily describe my identity, they do make contributions to my identity. Furthermore, my carefully chosen experiences make a

case for my ability to access resources that deepen my own understanding. My experiences have challenged and in some cases changed my worldview in ways that will benefit my students. This assignment challenged me to take those experiences, compile them and share them with my peer group. In doing this I was forced to reflect on my own life, I found that I built stronger relationships with my class. I have also found that through my life choices and experiences, I have gained immeasurably because of the perspective that it has given me. In any situation I have so many differing perspectives to compare and contrast. I believe that this will contribute to my classroom because I will want to expose my students to as much as I can in the Latin culture, in academia and even in the local community because I know it will influence their choices as it has influenced mine.
