Title: Gastric Bypass Persuasion Speech Date: Fall 2010 Artifact Description: This artifact is a persuasive speech written

for my Public Speaking class at UWPlatteville during the fall semester of 2010. Its purpose is to persuade individuals away from the gastric bypass surgery for cosmetic reasons. Included are my speech outline and the slides from the PowerPoint that I used to illustrate my points visually. ALIGNMENT Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: This artifact best aligns with Standard Six of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. This experience aligns with standard six because I effectively use several avenues of interaction to present my materials. By delivering my speech with the use of technology and my own communication, both verbal and nonverbal, I was able to accomplish my goal of persuasion. With my ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally, my audience was able to understand the points that I was presenting while also having the added value of visual aids to guide their understanding. Nonverbal communication such as eye contact, open body stance, and a pleasant demeanor made me more available to answer questions that audience members may have. In this way, active inquiry was an active part of my speech as I allowed for questions throughout my presentation. Topics, especially those in the field of medical science, can be difficult to understand, so allowing collaboration and supportive interaction in the classroom instills a deeper understanding of the topic and therefore a more informed decision. It was my intent to allow my instruction to be a two-way avenue of interaction to benefit the audiences perspective of my topic. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment: This artifact best aligns with KS3.a. which states: The candidates spoken and written language are thoughtfully, responsively, and effectively for a wide range of student understanding and encourages appropriate student language development. While preparing this presentation, I was careful to use language that would be understood by an audience member with little to no background or experience in the field of medical science. I did, however, use terms that I also defined so that the audience could expand their knowledge of the gastrointestinal system and how the gastric bypass surgery affects the individual undergoing the procedure. In this way, I was able to have a conversation with my audience in which they sought meaning and I administered understanding of the topic. I was confident that my audience was in full understanding of the topic at hand by the end of the presentation and had a generally sound perspective on the benefits and disadvantages of having a gastric bypass surgery for cosmetic purposes. REFLECTION What I learned about teaching/learning:

I learned that when presenting information, it is important to use multiple avenues of display. The ability to use verbal and nonverbal communication in a classroom is extremely important, and the use of technology is becoming more and more prevalent every day. Using technology with ease and grace is necessary for classroom instruction. My use of PowerPoint for this presentation demonstrates my ability to successfully deliver information clearly and effectively, in this case about the gastric bypass surgery. I was able to use thought-provoking photos and statistics to support my claims that I was delivering to the audience. The nonverbal communication, both through technology and my body language, allowed me to successfully deliver a well thought-out and planned presentation.

What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: As a prospective educator, it is highly important to be able to use every possible resource, including technology, to engage students in learning. Students learn in multiple ways, and being able to address more than one of these ways effectively in the classroom is key to successful learning. The use of technology is more common in classrooms today and a means of instruction. Being well-versed and comfortable in the use of technology keeps my classroom more interactive and interesting for my students.
