DRA Pre Assessment Level 4 Level 16 Level 28

Level 4 is at an independent level of reading

Oral Reading, Percent of accuracy The student is able to read fluently with very few miscues (This means that the student can read but may not be understanding what they are reading)

Level 4 left out some details like names when retelling the story

They also left out linguistic spillover and the reason for the search

Level 4 needed few prompts

Comprehension-Retelling As the student retells the story they have just read, the teacher underlines what the student retells from the story. If it is not underlined, the student omitted it. If the retelling is limited, the teacher uses one or more of the following prompts to gain

The part with the bed/Because I read good on that part.

I have a umbrella, it has green on it. It has a wooden carved hook, the other one broke off and my dad made a new one.

Reflection The student could not make deep connections with the story they have read. The story was about a child named Kim looking for her umbrella because it was raining. By the time she found the umbrella, her dad said the sun was out.

The student is attempting to come out of their shell and becoming a more independent reader. The student needs to work on reflection and making connections They give a limited response and make a connection that reflects a limited understanding of

What does this mean?


Level 4 will be put in a group with other students who have difficulty with comprehension as well. These students will work on these strategies with the teacher during guided reading to become better readers These students will focus on the following strategies: Self-correcting (student does not self correct that often; usually skips over word and does not return to it) Retelling (student does not use linguistic spillover when retelling stories) Reflection (student uses limited response) Making connections (student does not make deep connections with the stories)

Level 16 is at an advanced level Oral Reading Words Per Minute, Percent of Accuracy The student was able to read the story in 3:24 or less with 76 or more words per minute. This is the best time the students can receive. It means that the student can read fluently with very few miscues.

Level 16 omitted the reason for taking a walk They also omitted the reason for not going too far Level 16 did not leave out much detail with the story retelling

When he ran as fast as he could to get away from the tiger

Reflection The student made a shallow connection with the story. The story was about a monkey who was told not to wander off too far because there are others animals that will eat him. He doesnt listen and runs into a tiger. While he is running away from the tiger, he uses hippos as stepping

Sometimes when Im scared I run to my moms room and snuggle with her and tell her what happened

Teacher Anaylsis
This student is definitely at the level that they need to be. They are completely independent at this level and need to be challenged to move onto the next couple of levels. What does this mean?

Level 16 was put into a group with other students that have passed the fluency and comprehension assessment. They need to be challenged with more difficult leveled books. This is where they will be reading and analyzing level 18 and up books.

Oral Reading Words Per Minute, Percent of Accuracy The student was able to read the story in 1:51 or less with zero miscues. This is the best that students can do with accuracy

Comprehension-Retelling

Level 28 makes proper predictions to the story The student is told to make predictions on the story The teacher writes down the predictions. Then the student reads the story to see if they are correct

However, they did not use character description

Level 28 has not yet mastered understanding important text implications Level 28 needs to work on higher level thinking

Teacher Analysis

This student has done a terrific job with the oral fluency and some of the comprehension. They need to work on using character descriptions, interpreting the text more proficiently and reflecting on what they have just read.

What does this mean? Level 28 was put into a group of other students who are at a lower level. They will be focusing on level 24 texts and working on text features, story elements, predictions, interpretation and reflection.
