Maslows Hierarchy of Needs: Part 1

Maslow (1954) studied the healthy physiological state. He found people are basically honest, self-reliant and self-regulating with a tendency to seek relationships, growth and love.

Key Idea: People must have lower level needs met before they can pursue needs at higher levels. Deficiency Needs vs. Growth Needs: Deficiency Needs are the first four levels of the pyramid. Not meeting these needs can lead to anxiety. Growth Needs are the very top of the pyramid. These can be met when there is no void of deficiencies from lower needs. Self- Actualized people feel accomplished, fulfilled and have peak experiences.

Detailed view of need levels: Physiological Needs include breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion. Obstruction of these makes one blind to other needs. Safety Needs include physical, mental, and emotional security. People will risk safety needs in order to satisfy physiological needs.
