Delizs class

Intro: This lesson writing was designed to help 4th graders write an informative text. It consists of a whole class activity, a mini lesson, and a differentiated small group activity. They will learn about writing a text that is meant to provide facts and information. It was designed using the Ready Gen curriculum. Subject Area and Classroom: 4th grade General Education class, Urban setting Objective/Student Outcome: Student will be able to write an informative text about how to care for a pet. They will provide information based on prior knowledge and create a how-to pamphlet with written text, text features and pictures. Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.. Focus Questions: What is an informative text? Why would it be important to tell someone how to care for a pet?

Materials Needed: Computer, Smart Board, blank sheets of paper to tri-fold into pamphlets, colored pencils, lined paper Pre-Assessment: The students have practiced informative texts by completing the previous Ready Gen assignments. They read, re-read, then write a paragraph using text-based facts and information. They are familiar with using text books to write, but were most recently required to write an advertisement about a pet they are selling. They were told to describe what the pet looks like, acts like, and how to write positive things about the pet to persuade someone to buy it. The next step will be this activity, in which they must use prior knowledge to teach someone to take care of a pet. Most of the children are able to write independently. The students who will need extra help will receive one on one attention during the independent activity, since their seating

is crucial to their behavior and cannot be modified (besides three children who will work with Ms. Deliz) for small groups during writing. Lesson Presentation:

You could be explaining a term or teaching your audience how to do something. -In an informative text, your intention is to teach someone about something. -Key elements: Purpose- Why did you write the text? Major ideas- What do you want the reader to learn? Supporting details- What details help support the major idea? Aids- pictures, info-graphs, charts

- Introduce the steps to writing an informative text, such as organizing thoughts, doing a rough draft, then publishing.

Differentiation: This class is differentiated based on behavior and who needs to be managed closely. Nazaya, Tyler and Justin (with Ms. Deliz): They will receive a checklist that allows them to keep track of their progress. They will be informed of their reward if they are able to complete the task without any disturbances to the rest of the class. Closure: One student from each table will share their pamphlet and teach the class how to care for their pet. Teacher will ask: What is the pupose of the pamphlet? What details did you include to support the purpose of the pamphlet? What pictures have you included to help the reader?
