Electromagnetic Spectrum

Gamma Rays
Are absorbed by Earths atmosphere (do not get through) Dangerous to humans: can kill living cells Used to kill cancerous tumors

X-Rays
Do not penetrate Earths atmosphere Dangers: over exposure can result in cancer and skin burns. Used to analyze medical conditions, such as broken bones and cavities in teeth. Used for scanning luggage in airports.

Ultraviolet
Most waves are blocked by ozone in Earths atmosphere, but some get through. Dangers: causes sunburns and skin cancer UV lamps are used to kill bacteria and viruses, sterilize equipment, and treat acne.

Visible Light
Penetrates Earths atmosphere Danger to our eyes, use sunglasses for protection. Can be manipulated to create a laser beam. Lasers are used for eye surgery, treating skin cancer, removing tattoos, automated checkouts (scanners) in stores, for creating CDs and DVDs.

Infrared
Most, but not all, is absorbed by water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases in Earths atmosphere We feel it as heat Danger: overheating Uses: TV remote controls, night vision goggles, meteorology, astronomy

Microwaves
Can penetrate Earths atmosphere Danger to living things is uncertain They are basically high frequency radio waves Used for Bluetooth devices, some cell phones, some cable/Internet, radio astronomy, Doppler radar for weather forecasting.

Radio Waves
Can penetrate Earths atmosphere Danger to humans is unproven at normal doses. Uses: radio and television signals, remote controls for toys, communication between electronic devices (wireless mouse/keyboard, etc.)
