Original Text In this grave hour, perhaps the most fateful in our history, I send to every household of my peoples,

both at home and overseas, this message, spoken with the same depth of feeling for each one of you as if I were able to cross your threshold and speak to you myself. For the second time in the lives of most of us, we are at war. Over and over again, we have tried to find a peaceful way out of the differences between ourselves and those who are now our enemies; but it has been in vain. We have been forced into a conflict, for we are called, with our allies, to meet the challenge of a principle which, if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilized order in the world. It is a principle which permits a state, in the selfish pursuit of power, to disregard its treaties and its solemn pledges, which sanctions the use of force or threat of force against the sovereignty and independence of other states. Such a principle, stripped of all disguise, is surely the mere primitive doctrine that might is right, and if this principle were established through the world, the freedom of our own country and of the whole British Commonwealth of nations would be in danger. But far more than this, the peoples of the world would be kept in bondage of fear, and all hopes of settled peace and of the security, of justice and liberty, among nations, would be ended. This is the ultimate issue which confronts us. For the sake of all that we ourselves hold dear, and of the world order and peace, it is unthinkable that we should refuse to meet the challenge. It is to this high purpose that I now call my people at home, and my peoples across the seas, who will make our cause their own. I ask them to stand calm and firm and united in this time of trial. The task will be hard. There may be dark days ahead, and war can no longer be confined to the battlefield, but we can only do the right as we see the right, and reverently commit our cause to God. If one and all we keep resolutely faithful to it, ready for whatever service or sacrifice it may demand, then with God's help, we shall prevail. Twitter Reflection The main basis of my reflection is about the movie the Kings Speech, but more specifically the text of the speech, not the movie. I chose to use a twitter feed as my technology-based genre because I took a speech, broke it down into separate tweets. I also added pictures and hash tags to make it more modern along with my genre adaptation. The intended audience is anyone who has a twitter will be able to see the speech along with other tweets on the account. Somebody that wouldnt have access to

my adaptation would be someone who doesnt have access to the Internet. I made the account on twitter public so anyone that does have a twitter account can view the tweets and they are not blocked. At first I did not know which technology adaptation to use but since I chose the Kings Speech text, it seemed easiest to tweet the speech and add more content because tweeting is just mainly words. So I used this technology instead of Facebook because there werent many other characters involved in the speech, it was just King George VI. My genre adaptation enables the readers to not only see the speech in tweet format but to also see the progression of his speech as it developed. The development of his speech was important so I used this twitter feed to show how the speech progressed in the twitter feed as it did with in real life and the movie. I believe that this genre is more understandable with todays generation of social media, compared to when the speech was written with no social media like today. I think that this is important because it shows a different perspective on taking an old text and turning it into a different form. This is exactly what happened with the movie The Kings Speech, they showed the backstory and the story of how the speech was developed, written and given. I took this genre by using the speech but also adding in more information to make it more modernized because that is what our adaptations were for by taking our original text and changing it to different adaptations. Technology has obviously changed from the past and the change gave me the opportunity to use this to show how the speech was perfected tweet by tweet. Would people actually need to see the entire speech at one time? Or would it be better for them to see it in sections to help them better understand each piece of it as they go along. I used proper spelling for the speech on twitter, but I also did use hash tags that are not normally used outside of twitter. Overall I think that this genre fits

the audience of todays generation which would be easier for people to read but also understand the time of hardship that this country was experiencing at the time. In this adaptation I also used pictures to help give the audience something to look at and help them understand where this is taking place if someone is not familiar with the United Kingdom. I used pictures of the Buckingham Palace and pictures of the Tower Bridge in London. Letter Reflection I chose the Letter based genre because it shows an authentic version of what the letter may have looked like that King George made up. The speech was given to his people over the radio so this letter by King George shows the actual text that he may of read from. This gives an audience a firsthand look from what the king was using, and the intended audience are his people of Britain. This genre is of hand-written or typed letters is still used today but is not as popular than it used to be, due to the fact that social media is found everywhere in our world. The needs of the reader are to know what the speech is and how it went. Not everyone has seen the movie so this was the only way I could give them the actual text to read off of. Somebody cannot access this genre as easily because it is not as popular as social media, which would be very easy for someone to get a hold of. The most specific place that letters could be found might be in a post office, library, book or even newspapers. This particular genre allows the reader to connect with the King by seeing the format written by him at the time, which is my interpretation of what he would have done. I based this reflection off of examples used in the actual movie The Kings Speech but they were also taken from articles written about the speech. The original piece is exemplified with my letter because it is actually the real text of the speech that was

given. Without any pauses or breaks from tweet to tweet in my other adaptation. I wouldnt say that one adaptation is better than another because they are all different and they need to give different audiences different things to look at and experience differently. The constraint of this adaptation was that I couldnt add any pictures in to help the reader better understand what they were actually reading. I am more of a visual learner and it would help me if I were looking at a picture to help go along with the letter. That is what my twitter feed was for, maybe for a visual learner, but this letter format may be for a text based learner for someone who can read something and understand it on their own. The letter shows the huge jump of variations between generations with technology these days from strictly text in the past. These examples are mainly letters and also how people do not listen to speeches on the radio like they did in the movie. Most speeches these days are broadcasted on television so the audience can listen and have something to watch simultaneously. This was not done in the past because in the movie they had to listen to the speech over the radio while the king read it to his nation. It was different back then, but if it was done any other way, I feel that it wouldnt have the impact it did. Newspaper Article Reflection I chose the newspaper article to give a different perspective that the reader can see the actual event that occurred and not only just the speech itself. The intended audience can be anyone who reads the newspapers or somebody who did not know much about the speech that he gave. They can read this article and see the backstory of the speech and how the king stuttered through the speech that gave it its importance and fame. If it was just a simple boring reader that had no significance or signature to his voice then I dont

think it would have been as important as it was. This genre is found all over the world because each country has multiple newspapers and different news sources that people can read about. This keeps them up to date on what is happening in their country in a more official form than just looking it up on the Internet, I would prefer a published copy such as a newspaper. The news article can show the reader who the king was in the movie because it gives a more recent outlook on what actually happened. Not many people are more familiar with the speech from 1939 simply because it was a long time ago from today. I had never even heard of this speech until I saw the actual movie that showed what happened with the King and what he did in time of war. I used the news article to inform the reader on what happened just as a newspaper does. I also kept the format of the newspaper to give it the realistic look that it was actually an article from The United Kingdom in 1939 when the actual speech was given. This genre is a good adaptation to use because I was able to include the speech along with background information of the King and explain that his stutters actually increased the popularity of the speech for some reason. Almost like giving it character and making the speech more popular than it could have been by just using any speaker. The article is also good because I can use the format of a newspaper article that may give the reader more motivation to read the piece based on the format that it is in. When I read something I want to make sure it will not bore me and that it will actually be something interesting to read and not just waste my time. The article I created gives the reader a picture of the King in the studio that he used in the movie to help broadcast his speech. The article can also make someone not to read it if newspapers do not interest them, some people prefer different news sources which can play a big role in what they read. That is why it is so important that we have many

different adaptations of these genres so that different audiences can have different things to read to fit their needs. This adaptation is overall a good combination of important text of the article that would be the speech, a picture of the king, and background information as to why the speech had the significance that it did. Which is crucial because a newspaper article has to have many different parts to make up the entire newspaper. Reflection Letter Dear Ms. Sippy, At first I was unsure as to how I would be going to be able to adapt a simple speech and make it into so many different genres. Before we ever started this project I thought I knew what genres were and how to define them. After doing adaptations and then reflecting on them, I got a better look and understanding on the content that I was working with. Dean and Loshs pieces definitely helped me go beyond the surface and actually try to grasp the concepts that were discussed in their articles. It made me think more about my project and what I was going to do with it, and after reading the articles it helped me start on my project. It also lead me where I needed to go in order to finish the project, especially Loshs piece because it was a graphic novel. Sincerely, Eric Beam
