Two Faces of America By: Carlos Bulosan CARLOS BULOSAN - Born in the Village of Mangusmana near the town

of Binalonan - Belong to a rural farmer family - Because of his determination to help his family he decide to go in America specifically in Seattle on July 22 1930 at the age of 17 - Because he only finished 3 years of education from the Philippines, Carlos spoke little English . - During his hardships in finding employment, Carlos experienced economic difficulty and racial brutality that significantly damaged his health and eventually changed his perception of America. - He underwent operations because of having tuberculosis where he lost most of the right side of his ribs and the function of one lung. - Because of discrimination experienced in America he became a self-educated and prolific writer determined to voice the struggles he had undergone as a Filipino coming to America and the struggles he had witnessed of other people. - Cause of death : bronchopneumonia Background of the Story 1. It encourages people of all races and genders to ponder and improve their relationships with one another 3. Despite of the suffering and abuses, everyone must invest time and energy with a feeling of hope for the future instead of bitterness to such uncertainties.

Themes: It talks about the migrant

workers' struggles in the United States during the 1930s through the 1940s. Fighting for Equality is the premise of the story. The author narrated the establishment of labor union eradicating racial

STORYBOARD:

The Filipino Workers' Association in America comes to an end. The agricultural interests limit workers' civil freedom and are hitting back at the organizers. Carlos, Jose, and the other labor leaders have not correctly assessed their enemy. Jose, Carlos and the others met in the newspaper reporter's house to plan their strategy in attaining social equality. After the meeting, they each head to different places, their socalled territories. The opposition leaders are: Ganzo who works on the paper with Lucille; Jose and Carlos who are working in Santa Barbara County; Millar who is in Sacramento; Gazamen and Mariano who work in Portland.

Carl was then staggered towards San Jose. He found himself in a room with dolls and a poor radio on a table. Marian, a white woman came by, started asking questions to Carl. After that, she gave Carl a clean shirt, a basin of water and food. Marian surprised Carl when she told him that they will go to Los Angeles.

Millar notifies Carlos and Jose that there are problems in San Jose. They went to San Jose and cannot find Millar so they go to Ganzo to see how oppositions were progressing. Carl went to the lettuce fields and talked about justice and rights wanting an all-out strike with the workers. But Jose convinced Carl not to carry out rebellion for there is still hope.
