Capstone Lesson Plan

Topic: Writing Fluency and Mechanics (Capitalization, Punctuation, and Subject-Verb Agreement) Lesson Time: 90 minutes Objective: 1. After writing entries, and responding to classmates entries, on the class blog, students will be able to write a short essay that scores at least 95% on the writing mechanics and fluency rubric, within the 30 minute time limit given. 2. After having two classmates read and evaluate their blog entries, students will be able to make the necessary corrections to their blogs to be 100% free of writing mechanics errors (i.e. subject/verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation). Materials Needed: 1. Grammar Worksheets 2. SmartBoard 3. Project Description Sheet Procedure: a) Teacher lead discussion about what makes a written work successful b) Elicit from students their ideas about what are some qualities of a successfully written essay try to get the students to mention subject/verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation c) Distribute the Project Description Sheet d) Using the SmartBoard, play the screen cast of the project description e) Answer questions regarding the project f) Discuss briefly the events that will take place over the next two weeks, in and out of the classroom g) Use the SmartBoard to illustrate examples of how to make the subject and verb agree h) Using the examples on the board, have students identify the subjects in the sentences, and if they are singular or plural i) Distribute/Explain/Complete Worksheet #1 Subject Verb Agreement [This worksheet has explanatory information why the correct answers are correct] j) Walk around the class assisting when necessary k) If some students are struggling with the completion of the assignment, allow some of the more advanced students to assist them 1 to 1 l) Simultaneously with steps I and J above Distribute/Explain/Complete Worksheet #2 Subject Verb Agreement [students identify the subject in these sentences] m) Teacher lead discussion about the answers to the worksheets students will exchange papers and correct the assignments, and then return the papers to their owners n) Answer any questions related to the worksheets o) Dismissal Homework: N/A

Computers with internet access Procedure: a) Elicit from students a brief description of the project, and what the focus will be [i.e. subject/verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, and writing fluency] b) Identify capitalization and punctuation as the area of focus for today c) Elicit from students when is the proper time to capitalize a word [proper nouns, beginning of sentences] d) Show a couple of examples on the board e) Quickly ask students about the different kinds of sentences, and their corresponding punctuation marks [this is review because it was studied at the beginning of the year] f) Distribute/Explain/Complete Worksheets #3, 4, and 5 g) Walk around the class assisting when necessary h) Teacher lead discussion about the answers to the worksheets students will exchange papers and correct the assignments, and then return the papers to their owners i) Instruct students to log into Edmodo j) Give help with any log in issues k) Students will begin the first blogging exercise reading and written response l) Walk around the class assisting when necessary m) Instruct students that if they havent finished their 1st blog exercise, then they will complete it for homework n) Instruct students to: read some of their classmates responses at home; respond to two of their classmates; evaluate these two classmates using the peer evaluation rubric o) Students will email the peer evaluation rubric to the classmates that they critiqued p) Students will make any necessary edits at home q) Dismissal Homework: Complete Blog Prompt #1

Computers with internet access Procedure: a) Students will immediately begin working on the second blog exercise b) Walk around the class assisting when necessary c) Upon completion, students will respond to/evaluate classmates blog posts d) Students will use paper peer evaluation rubrics to critique, and then return to the appropriate party e) Students will make any necessary edits f) Homework [Blog Prompt #3] assigned g) Explain to/Inform students that they will complete the timed writing evaluation during the next lesson h) Dismissal Homework: Blog Prompt #3

Computers with internet access Procedure: a) Explain the timed writing exercise that will be completed on Edmodo b) Show students on the SmartBoard how to access the assignment c) Answer any questions from students about the exercise d) Students begin working on the assignment e) Walk around the class and monitor students progress f) After students complete the timed exercise, they will be given a short survey to gauge their response to the project g) If time permits, discuss thoughts and ideas about the project h) Dismissal Homework: N/A
