Identifying Topics Best suited for teaching procedural skills Use a specific set of steps to solve a problem Taught across curriculum for all grade levels Learning Objectives First and third goals involve conceptual knowledge Second and fourth involve procedural skills Automaticity-perform skills without thinking about it Transfer- applying acquired knowledge Select examples and problem Find problems Some can be simple and straightforward Some examples can be more thinking based questions Use examples you can build on, ex math-first use single digit, then single digit with regrouping until you get to two digits adding.

Phase I: Introduce and Review Attract students attention and draw them into the lesson(hook) Informally assess students knowledge of a concept to make sure they have some knowledge Phase II: Presentation Promote involvement of students Ensure that students understand the conceptual framework for the skill Phase III: Guided Practice Begin the process of developing the skill Ensure student success Phase IV: Independence Practice Develop automaticity with the skill Promote transfer to new concepts

Make sure that the wording for the assessment is not similar to the instructions. If it is the students may be confused with what they need to find and how they need to carry out the task to find the answer. Create a task that requires procedural skills to be carried out. Assessment is straight forward

Help students be more successful in learning activities Create a sense of challenge in students Use personalized and concrete examples Involve students in learning activities

So what? What is important to understand about this?

Students learn procedural skills. If the examples are personalized the student will be more motivated to find out the answer. This is also an engaging learning model that students will want to participate in because of the activities associated with the model.
