Yearta Lesson Plan Form Teacher: Kayla Lanham Unit Name: Forces and Motion Lesson Title: Marshmallow Shooter Grade Level: 5th grade Standards CCSS: Objective(s) Students will conduct an investigation on forces and gravity creating a marshmallow shooter. Assessment Students will demonstrate the pull force using the marshmallow shooters. Students will explain the effect of gravity on the marshmallows coming from the marshmallow shooters.

SC Standards: 5-5.1 Illustrate the effects of force (including magnetism, gravity, and friction) on motion.

Materials and Resources: 9-12 inch balloons, sturdy paper, Styrofoam cups, scissors, and measuring tape Lesson Introductio n *How will you engage your students in the topic?

Students will watch an interactive powerpoint on effects of gravity on forces and motion. http://www.engineeringinteract.org/resources/parkworldplot/flash/co ncepts/gravity.htm

Procedure *Be specific give stepby-step instructions

Students will be separated into groups of three. Step one: Turn Styrofoam cup upside down and cut the bottom of the cup out- Warn students not to squeeze the cup too hard, or it will crack or cave in. Step two: Cut off the top fourth of a balloon-not the part you blow in to blow up a balloon-rather the top, rounded part.

EDEL 441 L.Yearta Step three: stretch the open part of the balloon that was just cut over the base of the cup. Step four- Have students secure the marshmallow shooter, but systematically checking that the balloon is about a quarter to a half an inch up the base of the cup- this will ensure that the balloon will not come off the cup when force is applied. Step five: Encourage students to try out their marshmallow shooters. Give each student a mini-marshmallow and a regular sized marshmallow. Students are encouraged to use the pull force to catapult the marshmallow in a forward motion with gravity ultimately returning the marshmallow to a stationary position on the class floor (or wherever the marshmallow may land). Step six: There is a competition. Students have five minutes to practice their shooting techniques. Then groups compete against each other. The winner of each round moves to the final winners competition. Groups then compete for the title of Master Marshmallow Shooter.

Lesson Closure *How will you summarize the lesson?

Students will share their ideas on how different forces would affect the motion of the marshmallow in the marshmallow shooter. The teacher will wrap up by reminding students that gravity also has an effect on motion along with the forces.
