ANSI Generic Welding Symbols
This appendix presents generic symbols allowing you to create welding, brazing, and examination symbols in a drawing according to the ANSI standard. To aid you in creating symbol instances, it provides the following information for each generic symbol: The generic symbol name and brief description. An example of an instance created from this generic symbol and the associated menu picks. Listings of groups and subgroups in menu format reflecting a tree symbol definition structure. Notes advising how to correctly create instances using a specific group listing.
You can also see the Glossary of Menu Picks on page 1 - 3 for an explanation of menu selections for welding symbols.
1-1
Only decimal values are allowed for numeric entries. Default text (text enclosed in brackets), entered for variable text, has no physical meaning and is intended only to illustrate the format of the number you are prompted to enter. If you do not enter text (numeric or alphanumeric) at the system prompt, the system places the default text instead.
1-2
The text height in symbols is related to the height of the symbol size. To match the text height appearing in the symbol to the text height in the drawing, scale the instance accordingly (either while adding an instance to the drawing, or later by changing the symbol height).
1-3
In the group listings, exclusive groups are enclosed in a double frame, while independent groups are in a single frame. In this appendix, for the purpose of clarity, overlapping text lines are spread to make them readable. Weld Type Menu Selections MENU PICK BEVEL FILLET FLARE_BEVEL FLARE_V J_GROOVE REINFORCED_J DESCRIPTION Creates a bevel groove weld symbol and selects its characteristics. Weld Characteristics Menu Selections ANSI Generic Welding Symbols MENU PICK ALL_AROUND ARROW_SIDE BACKING OPTION DESCRIPTION Creates a continuous weld around a series of connected joints, creating a closed loop. Indicates the near side of the joint to be welded. Indicates that a strip is to be attached between the two members along the joint to be welded. Indicates the maximum thickness of a back or backing weld. Allows you to choose from the BACK_WELD, BACKING, INSERT, or MELT_THRU menu picks. Creates a back or backing weld for the groove weld. You must indicate in the REFERENCE whether the weld is back (initial process) or backing (secondary process). Indicates the countersink angle of the hole for a plug weld. Allows you to specify the approximate shape of the visible weld surface. The following choices are available for most welds: Always available with CONTOUR. Always available with CONTOUR. Available only for fillet welds. Indicates the depth of a weld filling, if the depth is less than the thickness of the member. Indicates welds that are not created at the location of primary weld fabrication. Indicates the leg(s) of a fillet weld. If the lengths are not equal, numeric values must have the format: AAxBB.

OPTION
DESCRIPTION Indicates the backing remains attached to the members being joined when the welding process is completed. Indicates the overall length of a weld or the length of a welding segment in an intermittent weld. Indicates the height of the root reinforcement in a melt through joint. Requires complete root penetration and visible root reinforcement of the welded joint. Indicates the number of spot or stud welds desired for a joint. Indicates the far side of the joint to be welded. Indicates the distance between centers of an intermittent fillet weld or the distance between centers of a spot weld when the NUMBER of welds is greater than 1. Indicates the depth of preparation of a groove weld prior to welding. Indicates reference notes may be included in the tail to specify process, sequence, a drawing detail, examination data, etc. If there are no special instructions, you should not select the REFERENCE menu pick. Creates a groove weld with no spacer between the two members in a joint. Indicates the leg(s) of the fillet weld in a reinforced groove welding symbol. If the lengths are not equal, numeric values must have the format AAxBB. Indicates the backing is removed when the welding process is completed. Indicates the separation distance of the two members being joined. Indicates no arrow or other-side significance in a joint to be welded.

OPTION
DESCRIPTION Creates the weld symbol beneath the solid reference line. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side.
CONTOUR
SMOOTH_BLEND
Describes the final shape of the weld. This choice indicates that the toes of the weld are blended smoothly. In the ANSI standard, this specifies the method of finishing. In the ISO standard, the system adds a machine finish surface texture symbol above the contour symbol. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. Refers to the diameter of a plug weld. Indicates (for combination welding symbols only) whether the other-side welding symbol is placed above or beneath the reference line. Refers to the diameter of a projection weld. Refers to the width of a seam weld.

OPTION
DESCRIPTION Refers to the diameter of a spot or fusion weld. Refers to the longitudinal dimension of a weld. Two choices are available: Weld joint continuously for the specified length. Creates weld beads of specified length, distance between adjacent weld elements, and specific number of beads. Refers to a welding symbol for creating identical welds on both arrow-side and other- side. Creates a tail on the opposite end of the welding symbol from the leader attachment. Provides two choices: Enters reference text or note. Specifies a welding process. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. For combination welding symbols, indicates the type of weld being created and whether it is created arrow-side or other-side (e.g., FILLET_AS). ISO Welding Symbols
