Grade 8 Modern Day Fable Unit 1 Performance Task

Unit title: Character Counts: Isnt it Ironic? Significant Concept: While honesty is the best policy, not everything is cut and dried. While you can always say
something is definitely right or wrong, you also have to look at the intention behind the act and judge whether it was better in the long run. We should never be too quick to judge a person before understanding the reasoning behind their actions. AOI: Health and Social Education

FORMATIVE TASK Using the moral from an existing fable, create a modern day version. Speaking and listening standards: 2 Analyse the pupose of information presented in diverse media and formats and evaluate their motives 5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest. 6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. Language standards: 3 Use knowledge of language when writing. Requirements Along with those studied in class, take some time to research and read/watch fables. Consider how the moral may still be effective to people today and make a modern version. Advice: Think about technology and how this could be used to engage todays readers. Your fable can be illustrated, could be produced as a comic strip, or even a movie maker. Think about the issues that are important to people today and how your message can help. Grading: This will be marked out of 1 criterion and will therefore be out of 10 marks. This will be a performance task for this quarter. The grading breakdown will follow the provided rubric.

The moral is suited to today and I have taken time over the presentation. I have been reflective and considered carefully how to rework an existing fable.

I have not considered how to modernize it and adapt the message to suit today.

The original message has not been changed and it is very clear which fable I have used for inspiration for my modern version. I have shown an understanding of the moral, along with the needs for todays society and cleverly used this in my fable.

I have understood the task and clearly adapted an existing fable for a more modern audience. I have shown an understanding of the needs of today, along with an understanding of the original message.

I have understood the concept of both a fable and moral and this is demonstrated in my modern version. I have considered how to adapt it, but occasionally stick to much to the original.

I have not fulfilled the criterion in any way.
