Visual Arts

Class Description and Purpose: Visual Art is a course where students will receive a variety of instruction in the studio areasdesign, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The course is set up to allow students to explore the visual arts in a way that will suite them. It is a course that will allow students to push their creativity and problem solving skills while learning about and how to apply the elements of art, the principles of design, the purposes of art, and the types of subject matter. Students will also take part in discussions of why art exists and its importance in society, as well as study different careers in the arts. The course will provide experiences to increase student ability if they chose to. Students will learn through art history, analysis of form, aesthetics, cultural heritage, and art production. Class Atmosphere My class will be based on respect. Students, their supplies, and their work will be respected by everyone. Students are expected to respect everyone and everything related to school and everyday life, including, peers, teacher, supplies, and property. Class will be a safe place for students to express themselves through the arts and their thoughts without ridicule. Website www.theartclass.weebly.com is a website I have created for our art classes at the middle school. On the website, you will find homework assignments, classwork assignments, warm-ups, projects, as well as pictures of students work. You may contact me directly through the website. There are also online as well as local resources here in Louisville relating to the arts that, if able, I encourage you and your family to experience some of them. Some are free, some cost money. Every art gallery has free admission (it is typically museums that charge money) Supplies Students will be provided with a folder which will remain in class. Students need to have a pencil everyday. Various materials the student wants to use, but is unavailable in class. Students should have the following supplies at home: Crayons/color pencils Ruler

Just a few of the things students will be able to say upon completion of this class: I can intentionally apply the principles of design and elements of visual art in creating a variety of works of arts and processes. I can respond to and critique works of art which involves an understanding of elements, principles, and structures appropriate to each area of the arts. I can use existing and emerging technologies that inspire new applications of art. I can use appropriate terminology to describe and analyze a variety of visual artworks. Revised 9/1/2013

I can understand and identify purposes for creating artwork. I can apply organizational structures and describe what makes them effective. I can identify different types of purposes and subject matters of art.

Grading

Below 70% I (Incomplete)Incomplete work due to absence must be completed and the grade recorded within two weeks of the end of the interim grading period, semester grade, or final grade unless the student is enrolled in ESS. If the work is not completed within that time, the students grade is recorded as U.

Approximately 10% of the students grade will be daily homework. Approximately 15% of the students grade will be class assignments like prep work Approximately 25% of the students grade will be projects. Approximately 20% of the students grade will be daily journal Approximately 20% of the students grade will be participation. Approximately 10% of the students grade will be assessments Students will not be graded on their artistic skill. The students grade will be based on their understanding, analysis, participation and use of each process as well as meeting criteria for each project. Students grade will be based on the number of points they received out of the number of points possible. Each assignment/project will be given a point value. Rubrics may be seen on the class website: www.theartclass.weebly.com. Late work Points will not be deducted for being late, however projects will be graded on due date based on what has been completed. It will be students responsibility to complete assignments on their own time after the due date and resubmit for a full grade. Extra time in class will not be given. . Home Work There will be four (4) homework assignments every week, due on Friday. Homework will vary from day to day and week to week, however, all assignments will be listed online on the class website: www.theartclass.weebly.com. Daily Participation Students will receive 10 points a day for class participation. Participation points will be awarded through observation. Students will also have a daily warm up and written reflection. Student will write a paragraph each day of what the student has learned, experienced, or accomplished each day in class. Behavior Disrespect and not following directions are unacceptable. Bullying and making fun of others work will not be tolerated. If multiple efforts have been made to redirect student behavior, and phone calls to parents have proven ineffective, students will be referred to administration to seek alternative ways to correct student behavior.
