Lesson Objective:
After reading the childrens picture book Monkey Puzzle, students shall discuss as an open group the describing words, adjectives, within the book and I shall be looking for understanding. They shall be able to use these describing words as clues to identify the adjective laden sentences to the correct animal diagram. They shall have grounding for understanding what an adjective is.

Preparation:
The picture book Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler English book A4 activity page, containing 8 grids (4 descriptors / 4 animal images) Scissors Glue stick

Lesson:
Introduction: Reading (all students together on the floor) Time: 15 minutes Read the book Monkey Puzzle. Use probing questions Has anyone read this book? (If some have, perhaps not have them answer the following questions firstleave some for others to have a go at answering. If the discussion stalls, ask those that have read the book to answer) What do you think the book will be about? Can you find the name of the author? How do you think it might start? How do you think it might end? Commence reading, ensuring all can see are focused and listening.

Intro Part 2: Group Discussion (all students together on the floor) Time: 10 minutes Ask what was the start of the book, middle and end. Identify one of the describing words, adjectives, on a page within the book. Remaining on that page, re-read it and ask students if they can hear another describing word. Read a second page and ask for describing words from that page. Introduce the activity sheet. Ask which animals they are and write their names on the whiteboard. Model cutting the sheet and matching pairs. Give clear instructions that the children are to match the appropriate describing words with the type of animal and paste them side-by-side within their English books. Demonstrate that the lines underneath the descriptors are for adding some of their own describing words. Leave the model version on the whiteboard.

Main Lesson: Individual Work back at their personal desks Time: 25 minutes Have students get quietly set to the task. Observe for struggling starters and assist them. Early finishers are instructed to have a go at writing their own descriptors. Only after they have added additional descriptors they can think of, the early finishers then move to pre-printed grids out the front and come up with different animals and write descriptors for those.

Closure: Group Discussion (all students pack up, move onto the floor) Time: 10 minutes Ask students to gather on the floor with their English books. Discuss the responses making note of the similarities and differences in the responses. Instruct students they shall be marking their own work. English books handed to me at the end.

Evaluation: Formative this lesson will be devoted to finding out what the students learn about adjectives, if they can match the 4 pairs and if they know any other adjectives to add.
