1. Peening shall be performed by striking convex surfaces of intermediate weld beads or layers with a round tool. 2. Peening energy shall be sufficient to mechanically elongate the surface of the weld without creating overlaps or cracks. 3. Pneumatic tools shall be operated in a manner that prevents contamination of the weld by moisture, oil or other materials. 4. The peening tool shall have a face with a 1/4 inch minimum radius. 5. Root and final passes shall not be peened. 6. The use of slag hammers, chisels, and lightweight vibrating tools for the removal of slag is not considered peening. 7. Peening shall be done when the weld is at a temperature of 1500 to 5000 F. 8. Care shall be taken to avoid striking fusion boundaries of the weld or the base metal.
