Spartan Fundamental Drill Book Introduction

Having a system of play based upon the fundamental skills of the game allows for consistency and stability from season to season. While your teams level of talent may change from season to season, a solid foundation of the fundamentals helps to make only small adjustments to your specific offenses and defenses necessary. When teaching your system of play, it is vital that the fundamentals become second nature to your players. According to Coach Wooden, a player must be able to properly and quickly execute the fundamentals under the pressure of game conditions for the welfare of the team. We strongly believe the axiom: You revert to your strongest habits in time of duress. Therefore, the drills you choose must be game like and done at a rapid pace. We believe that 80 percent of the drills used could be eliminated. Drills should not be done for the sake of the drill. Drills should fit your system and replicate game situations and teach the skills and movements you specifically want in games. Besides having game like drills, you should also use drills that have a primary and secondary emphasis. We all have limited practice time so it is a good idea to use drills which can teach as much of your system as efficiently as possible. As you read this booklet, look for the drills you can adapt to your system. When studying the game of basketball, it is important to get all the good ideas. You cant use all the good ideas. Take and adapt the ideas that fit your system.

Practice Format & Planning

Spartan Practice Philosophy: This part of the Fundamental Drill Book is to give you a picture of each part of a Spartan Basketball practice. The biggest thing to remember in becoming a great teacher is that you can create all the drills you want but it is what you want to emphasize in each drill, that really matters. Be a skill coach not a drill coach! Do one drill with 15 repetitions instead of doing 15 drills with one repetition. We all have different ways to approach our practices, but it is the simple things that we emphasize to do well each day that matters. Use repetition in practice to create a foundation of skills that can be executed confidently at game speed. These daily skills can make your team successful. *Some important aspects you need to be well drilled in as a coach are: 1. Use your time and all players wisely; nobody should be standing at any time. Utilize your time so all players are getting as many quality repetitions as possible. 2. Use your facilities. If you do not have enough hoops to do things during individual aspects of practice, make sure you have your groups set up and they are all active working on different parts of their game. 3. Communication: Echo calls and continuous talking throughout drills are very important. They help you move quickly and efficiently from drill to drill. Echo calls are when one player is given an order. He or she quickly and loudly yells out the instructions and as soon as somebody else hears it everybody repeats it until the next drill is going. Both echo calls and continuous talking throughout drill work are important in building a team.

5 Laws of Learning
1. Readiness to learn
(When the student is ready, the teacher will appear)

2. Proper Demonstration of the skill 3. Imitation of the demonstration of the skill 4. Correction of the imitation of the skill 5. Proper and quick repetition of the skill

1 Hand Catch Players stand 15 feet apart and pass the ball with 1 hand above their shoulder. *Teaching Points: 1. Use each hand when doing this drill. 2. Communicate with your partner. 3. Catch the ball with your hands, eyes, and feet. TENNIS BALL SERIES Dribble and Juggle Each player has a ball and a tennis ball. The player dribbles the basketball with his weak hand and juggles the tennis ball with his strong hand. Our players are able to toss the ball over the rafters of our arena. They will use various forms of the dribble after releasing the ball before making the catch on its descent. One of the various tricks is to try and catch the ball after it hits the floor and bounces up. *Teaching Points: 1. Get low and wide. Pound the dribble hard. 2. Keep your dribble if you lose control of the tennis ball. Never give up your dribble. 3. This drill is great in teaching the player not to watch the ball when dribbling.
We love this drill for our summer basketball campers and our players do it on their own in each practice.

TEAM FUNDAMENTALS

Dribble and Toss Players partner up and talk to each other while dribbling with the weak hand and underhand toss the ball with the strong hand. There are two balls dribbling and two tennis balls going back and forth between players. 1. We want the players to move in a random fashion while tossing. 2. Keep your dribble during any miscue handling the tennis ball. Dribble and Throw Players throw the ball overhand to each other while moving in random fashion. They will want to move further away from each other. 1. Continue stressing the communication of player names. 2. Encourage snappy, crisp throws. 3. Keep your dribble alive on miscues.

GO SPARTANS!

Bad Pass Reaction Two players with one basketball make sharp, crisp bad passes to each other. Another way to use this is to have a coach throw softball style bullet passes to the players. This really tests the hands. *Teaching Points: 1. Hands ready and knees bent. Sit into your game in a basketball position. 2. Try to get behind all the passes. You catch the ball with your feet. 3. Watch every catch into your hands. You catch the ball with your eyes. 4. Block the ball with one hand and tuck it to your chin with the other. You catch the ball with your hands. You catch the ball with your feet, your eyes, and your hands. 2 BALL DRIBBLING Each player has two basketballs and is on the baseline facing the playing floor. The players do five stationary dribbles. 1. Low rhythm (both very low) 2. Low non-rhythm (both very low) 3. High rhythm (both very high) 4. High non-rhythm (both very high) 5. High-low (one very high-one very low) After doing the dribble in a stationary position, they move out very slowly to the half line, using all five dribbles. When they reach the half line, they come back to the baseline using dribble changes of hand, never doing any of the changes twice. 1. Be in a basketball position sitting into your game. 2. Eyes on the far net for vision to scan the floor. 3. Start slow, get a rhythm and go fast enough to make a mistake. (Overload your hands) 4. Be ball quick, pound the dribble. Windshield Wipers Dribble both balls across your body in unison. Go as far to each side as possible. A variation of this drill is to use one ball and go as far out as possible. Together Bring the balls together and if possible have them touch each other. Keep the balls as low to the floor as possible. ***A variation of this drill is to cross the dribbles in front of one another alternating right over left and then left over right. Rhythm Push-Pull on Sides of Body Work both arms together as you do push-pull dribbles with two basketballs. Alternate Push-Pull on Sides of the Body This is tough. Alternate arms and do the push-pull dribble with two basketballs. GO SPARTANS!

Pullback Crossover Progression Start in a stationary position. A. Begin with the push-pull dribble on your right side until you feel the rhythm. B. Crossover the ball to the left side and push-pull until you feel the rhythm. C. Push-pull once and crossover low and to the floor and quickly to the other side. You can vary the number of push-pulls before crossing over. D. Do the same with a baby step. E. Do the same with a lunge step, pushing the defense back. F. Take at least two dribbles forward, push-stepping forward and two dribbles back, push-stepping back. Cross it over and repeat sequence with the other hand. **Point your lead foot in the direction you are going. G. Lunge step as in E. H. Baby step as in D. I. Push-pull and cross over stationary as in C. J. Work back down to the start as in B and A. *Teaching Points: 1. Basketball position, low and wide sitting into your game. 2. Start slow, get a rhythm, go fast enough to make a mistake. 3. Eyes on the net if full court and rim if half court. 4. Point the lead foot going forward and back. 5. You can crossover in front or between your legs. Hop Step Series: Players line up at the elbows. Execute a direct drive with a hopstep finish. Execute a crossover drive with a Hop Step finish. Players can move back to the 3 point arc as they get more comfortable with this move. *Teaching Points: 1. Slice, Dribble, Cup, Loop, Hop, Land 2. Hop Step, Hop Skip, Hop Stag 4. Break it down, then go in one continuous motion.

2 Ball Buster (25:54 of Purdue Edits) Player starts on the right block with the ball. The other ball should be placed on the left block. Transfer the ball over your head with your top foot as your pivot foot. Step with your lead foot (closest to the baseline) and bounce the ball at the same time as your foot hits the floor. Hop and land on 2 feet when you finish. Repeat the process for a predetermined number of shots. Always rebound your shot and place the ball on the block. *Teaching Points: 1. Make sure you get your feet up under you. 2. Explode up with power each time. 3. Utilize each hand. 4. Feet perpendicular to the baseline. Dribble Series Players start behind the half court line, dribbling full speed at a chair that has been placed between half court and arc and another chair at the lane line extended above the 3 pt arc. Player will use a prescribed move at each of these chairs and go in for a full speed lay up finish. After making the lay up, the offensive player spins the ball out to simulate an outlet pass and catches the ball with his back to the sideline. The player must then execute the prescribed move two times before reaching half court where he finishes the drill with a jump stop. *Teaching Points: 1. Can use 2 chairs on each end for maximum participation. 2. Can finish with lay up on one end and jump shot on the other. 3. Utilize coaches/managers to make it tough to finish at the rim. 4. Get to the rim in 1 dribble after making the prescribed move. 1 on 1 Square up Strong Offense spins the ball to themselves outside the arc. Defense pressures the ball for 15 seconds. Switch offense and defense. *Teaching Points 1. Offense: catch the ball on 2 feet, square up strong by getting 10 toes to the rim 2. Defense: Force the offense to play with their back to the basket 2 on 1 Keep Away 2 offense players 10-15 ft away from each other. 1 defensive player pressures the ball. On pass defensive player will replace passer and passer will closeout the player he just passed to. Repeat until everyone has closed out twice. *Teaching Points 1. Offense: fake a pass to make a pass 2. Offense: Play with 10 toes towards rim (target) 3. Defense: Force offense to play with back to basket (target) 4. Defense: Active hand pressure

Rotate lines 4on0 Team Transfers Players are positioned at each shell spot around the perimeter. Basketballs (heavy balls) start in the corner. Player tranfers the basketball and makes a pass to his teammate. The ball is passed to each player until it arrives in the opposite corner when the player transfers the ball, takes 2 bounces, and finishes at the rim. High and Low transfers can be executed. Drill can go in each direction. Player snatches the basketball to his baseline side and looks to finish. 3 Moves and Finish 4:25-5:30 Purdue Edits. A defender is set up at both foul lines and half court. The offensive player makes a move on each of these defenders. The last defender either comes out and attacks the offensive player or sinks back in the paint. The offensive player makes the proper finishing play. Dribble Pivots 6:30-6:42 Purdue Edits. SHOOTING DRILLS
TEAM DRILLS Weave Full Court Shooting Start the drill with 3 lines on the baseline on each end of the floor. There will be a basketball at the front of all three lines on one side of the floor. There will be a basketball at the front of the middle line on the other end of the floor. This is where the drill starts. These 3 offensive players execute a 3 man weave to the other end of the floor. The player who started with the basketball will shoot the ball when he receives the pass in front court. The other 2 players will receive pass from the 2 outside players who are on the baseline. The same thing now happens going in the other direction. Time or makes can be the goal. Milwaulkee Shooting 2 Lines with 2 basketballs. Each player will take a shot from the predetermined spot and will rebound their shot. Each player will then make a pass to the first available player in the other line. Elbow to Elbow, Wing to Wing, and Corner to Corner are the spots to be used during this drill. ODU Shooting 2 lines are made starting behind the baseline on the lane line extended off the floor. The first player in each line does not have a ball. The 2nd and 3rd players do have a basketball. 1 & 2 cross each other to the opposite elbows and receive a pass from players 3 & 4. 3 & 4 immediately follow 1 & 2. Shooters get their own rebound. Team Spot Shooting (Walburg 5 spot shooting) 4 minutes / 3 or 4 players and 2 balls per basket / 5 spots are corners, wings, and TOK Must make 7 baskets at each spot to move to the next spot (not in a row) / Once these shots are made (hopefully before the 4 minutes) the team keeps shooting to get as many extra baskets as possible Your minimum team goal should be even = Example: Group 1 completes 4 spots and has made 4 baskets on the 5th spot their score is -3 Group 2 completes all 5 spots and makes 5 more baskets at the TOK their score is +5 Team Total should be even 20 Minute Shooting 9 spots to shoot from. Each partner shoots for 1 minute before switching. Spots are 5ft, 10ft, 15ft, elbow to elbow, FT line (2 steps back after shot, 2 steps into shot on pass), 18ft, 3 pt, 18ft, FT line for last 2 min

Hawks Shooting 2 lines, starting on blocks, 3 basketballs, 2 balls in one line, player in line with 2 balls shoots first, gets own rebound and throws to next player in other line, Lines alternate taking shots, after an amount of time move lines back to 2nd hash mark, elbow, 3 pt, 1/2 court for a dribble 2 pullup, 1/2 court for dribble 3 pullup, wing SF, wing 3pt, Corner SF, corner 3pt During Hawks Shooting utilize other goals for 1 or 2 players to get game shots up, can have coach rebound, or partner shoot, work on post moves, etc. GROUP DRILLS Penetrate and Pitch Teams are divided up into 2 lines. One line will have a basketball. Penetration rules are followed and shots are taken. The penetration spot can be changed along with the type of shot that is taken. *Teaching Points: 1. Can pass top to wing, wing to top, baseline drift, European, 2s, 3s, and shot fakes. Continuous 3s Lines of 3 or 4 down the lane line starting at the elbow. 1st player does not have a basketball. He starts the drill by running to half court and returning to shoot a 3 at the arc when receiving the pass from player 2. After the 2nd player makes the pass, he then runs and touches half court and returns to shoot a 3 on a pass from player 3. Spots can be changed and you can shoot for number of makes or for a predetermined amount of time. Celtic Drill (Walburg Bird Drill) 2:00 or 3:00 on the clock, 5 spots marked on the floor, player must make 2 shots in a row from each spot going around the arc, then repeat coming back for a total of 10 spots When finished the player goes to the TOK and starts getting a positive score ex. +4, +8, etc.. If the player does not make it around to all 10 spots, then the spot that the player ends up on when time runs out is the number that is written down with a circle around it INDIVIDUAL DRILLS Streak Shooting 5 spots 2 corners, 2 wings, and straight on Made shots are worth 1 point and you stay in the same spot until you miss 2 shots in a row. Example: make, make, make, miss, make, miss, make, make, miss, miss = 6pts Once you miss 2 consecutive shots move to spot 2 and so on until you finish spot 5

A&M Free Throws Groups of 3 players. 1:00 for each rotation. Player A is shooting free throws. Player B is rebounding for the shooter. Player C is doing 2 ball dribbling. Rotate A-B-C. Can also set a number to hit during the minute. 1&1 or Run Each player will shoot a 1&1 free throw situation. If player misses the first shot, then they are required to do a full court sprint. If player misses the 2nd free throw, then they are required to do a court sprint. If player makes both free throws, they do not have to run. Pressure Free Throw Chart Shoot 2 free throws at various points throughout practice and if they miss everyone runs. Keep up with this percentage as the year progresses to find out who the best shooters are under pressure Sideline Free Throws All players line up on sideline. There are 16 runs that are on the board. A player is selected to shoot a free throw in exchange for one of these runs. Example: Player A chooses 14. If he makes the shot, the 14 is taken off the board. If he misses the free throw, the team runs a 14 (each touch of the sideline is 1). This is continued until all 16 free throws have been shot. 3 in a Rows 3 machine gun FTs then rotate. TRANSITION DRILLS
Duke 2 on 0 Transition There is one line of players in the lane and another line of players at the outlet. Players in the lane have a basketball. Drill is started by player with the ball tossing the ball on the backboard and getting the rebound, and making an outlet pass to his teammate. The receiver of the outlet pushes the ball to the free throw line on the opposite end of the floor. The player who made the outlet pass runs the lane to the opposite end of the floor and receives a pass from his teammate. Different moves can now be executed: Lay up, pull up jumper off the glass, shot fake right, shot fake left, 3pt *Teaching Points: 1. Rebounder must chin the ball and make a turn in the air. 2. Outlet man calls for the ball and receives the outlet with his back to the sideline. 3. Run the lane wide and communicate which lane you are in. 4. Proper footwork from the passer and the receiver. Laker 3 lines with 1 ball in the middle. Must make 10 lay ups without the ball hitting the floor. 1 in middle 2 in right lane and 3 in left lane. 1 offensive rebound, outlet to 2, 2 back to 1, 1 to 3 for the layup. 1 goes wide around a cone on the other end (free throw line extended outside of the arc). 2 gets rebound, 2 passes to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1 for lay up. New set of 3 players now run the same drill to the other end. Perfection For time, 2 hand catch, make all lay ups or start over, everyone finishes. Dont use heavy ball on #5. 1) 4 dribble lay ups, make one on each goal, up and back/ All players make right handed lay up, then all players make left handed lay up 2) 2on0 Box 2 Box / lane line extended passing back and forth, finish lay up on each end of the floor, different player shoots the basketball each time 3) Michigan Drill / 3 lines, ball in middle / 2 players pass back and forth for a total of 4 passes, middle man then passes to the other wing player who was running the floor for the lay up, wings change sides of the floor on the make and the middle man gets the ball from out of the net without the ball hitting the floor, middle man then passes to the wing (player who made the lay up) and when receiving the pass back looks up the floor for a pitch ahead to the other wing player for a lay up. Middle man sprints the floor to get the ball out of the net. 4) Weave / 3 Man weave with 5 passes / finish with a lay up 5) Weave / 3 Man weave / 3 passes and jumper / must get rebound without the basketball hitting the floor and finish

11 Attack Defender is in the center jump circle and cannot retreat until the ball gets to the center jump circle. The offense starts at the top of the key and sprints to the center circle where he receives a pass from the coach (a couple of steps before he gets to the circle). The offensive player makes a move on the defender and goes in straight line to the basket. The offense CANNOT turn his back on the defender. There is another defender who started in the paint and is sprinting trying to block the shot of the offensive player. The 2 defenders now convert to offense. The trail defender takes the ball out of bounds. The on the ball defender is now trying to get open versus pressure. The offensive player is now on defense and applying pressure to the inbounds pass. They play 2on1 to the other end of the floor. If there is a missed lay up, they want a tip finish. (we want a 2 hand finish!) 2on1 we want air passes. Dont get it blocked. Shoot it off the glass. Each team gets 1 point for each lay up. Play to 6. 22 Attack Drill Starts same as 11 drill except now you have 2 offensive players. On pass from coach to start drill, the offense speed dribbles to half court and then they start passing the ball back and forth. On makes the offense goes to defense and denies the ball inbound with 2 players guarding the one offensive receiver. They play 2on2 to the other end. All baskets count 1 point. 32 Team (must have 10 players to run the drill) play to 12 points / count 3s and 2s Drill starts with 3 green at half court attacking 2 white in the paint. There are also 2 green in the paint at the other end of the floor. The white are on the sidelines of their teammates who started on defense. Whoever rebounds the ball for the white is the outlet and will pass to one of his teammates looping onto the floor. These 2 players along with their other team member are now attacking 3on2 to the other end. Drill is continuous. Teaching Points: 1) Pitch ahead up the floor. 2) Beat the your man for a lay up. 3) Opposite lane runs weakside block. 4) Trail off player fills Ballside lane line extended. Shoot or shoot pass. *deeper the drive the more the trailer fills in behind

Indiana Skip Pass and Hold Seal for Five Seconds Players start on the weakside block facing the basketball. As they see the ball being skipped from the strong side to the weakside they should step in and set a screen on the closest guy in the defense. After you set the screen you step with bottom leg right in between the legs of the second defender. As you put your leg in between the defenders legs you are to meet them with a strong open forearm in the chest. Do not hit them with it; just meet them with your open forearm. Then leg whip and sit down in DOLEAC stance, active with your feet and calling for the ball. *Teaching Points: 1. Call for the skip 2. Setting the screen 3. Splitting the Defender with your first step and leg whip to create passing angle 4. Meeting with open forearm in defenders chest 5. Leg whipping and sitting on the leg of defender ONE ON ONE POST CUT THROAT You have an offensive player and defensive player in the lane with three or four perimeter passer. The ball starts with the defensive post player who can kick it out to the passer of their choice. The post players both offensively and defensively are then playing 1 on 1 cut throat in the lane. You can play two basket games or 2 minute games. You then progress up with your time and or basket games as you see fit. In order to make the defense really work. Swing the ball from side to side a couple times before looking in to score. *Teaching Point: 1. Defensive stance, jumping to the ball, fronting 2. Offensive player: sealing, Doleac stance, pointing to where you want the ball placed for entry McHale Drill The player uses one hand to tip the basketball on the backboard while using the other hand to touch the rim, backboard, or net. On the 3rd tip the player changes sides with the basketball. Put the ball in the basket on the 18th shot. Post Move Series (15:38 and 27:50 of West Virginia Edits) The player receives pass (prefer heavy balls) from the wing. The post player passes out of the post to the flare spot, follows their pass and posts up again. Drop step baseline, Face and Cross, Fake Face and Cross, Jump Hooks, Up and Under, Dribble Drop (contact and spin), face up, and face up and drive are performed from each side of the floor.

Chin and Finish Player stands perpendicular to the rim. Player chins the basketball, drop step and finish. Pass back out, sit down in stance, receive pass, transfer high, and finish. 10 in a row on each side. Backboard Touch and Finish Jump up with 2 hands on ball and touch the backboard. 2 hand power dribble and hop while landing on 2 feet to the other side of the rim. Finish with lay up. Keep shoulders parallel to the baseline. Make 5 in a row. Make Five in a Row; Put Backs Count This drill is geared towards post players. The post player flashes high and shoots a jump shot. As long as the ball never hits the floor, a miss shot is not counted. You will learn to follow your shot by using this shooting game. Flare, Follow, and Finish Each post player has a ball. Pass out to a coach and seal. After receiving entry, the post flares to the opposite guard spot. Player follows his pass to the other block. Post player executes the designated move.

REBOUNDING SEQUENCE
Circle the Wagons 4 on 4 drill with each 4 going 2x and then rotating. A coach will say circle the wagons and the defenders will rotate calling out who they have and pointing at the offense. The coach will shoot the ball and the defenders will go to who they were pointing and yelling out. The shot needs to be taken when the defenders are on the move trying to find another player. Can play with the same rules as the Tom Izzo drill. (5on5 drill @ 27:00 of Tenn Tech Edit tape) Spin Drill (Perimeter & Post) The offensive wing sprints into the lane where there is a defender (coach with a dummy) waiting on him. The offensive player spins off of the defender and gets the rebound. The offense then finishes the shot with no dribble. This drill can also be used in the paint by an offensive player who is posting up. This drill can also be used to practice the swim technique. Get opposite for offensive rebounding. Double Bubble Drill Normal basketball: Secondary, Sets, whatever Def Reb 1pt / Off Reb 2pts / TO -1pt / No Dive on Floor -2pts / Good Screen 1pt / Play to 10 points with losers running and winners clapping Always do this shooting drill after bubble drills. This helps them get their confidence back. 2 lines at each elbow / 2 minutes on the clock / 50 makes / 76 attempts / They will not get this number the first time / For every attempt under 76 put 1 minute on the clock and do the full court tip drill on each end 2 on 1 Rebounding 3 players get in the lane. Coach has ball at FT line. Coach can pass the ball to a player or miss a shot. Whichever 2 players dont have the ball are on defense. Play until someone scores. Physical toughness drill (dont call fouls). *Teaching Points 1. Dont dribble after rebound go straight up 2. Dont avoid contact

3 Man Weave Box out or 1 on 1 3 lines behind half court. Ball starts at half court in middle line. This line will make a pass and weave behind to the wing. Player receiving 1st pass will and go to middle of lane. This player is now in help defense guarding the original passer from the middle line. Option 1 player receiving 2nd pass takes a shot and help defender has a weak side block out. Option 2 player receiving 2nd pass throws a skip pass forcing help defender to closeout. Play live 1 on 1 on skip and closeout. *Teaching Points 1. Defensive Rebounder: Make contact and pursue ball 2. Offensive Rebounder: Use swim move to get side by side with defender 3on3 Rebounding Coach picks out a group of 3 defensive players. Everyone else is divided in three lines. Point guards in the top line with wings in one corner and post players in the other corner. Coach with ball at one of the guard spots. The post player can dive to the block (defense plays initial post defense) or take one step in and replace in the corner. Drill starts with the PG setting a down screen for the wing in the corner. Coach puts the ball in play. Offense now has 9 seconds to score off of penetration or cutting. Goal is to secure 3 rebounds in a row to get your group out. Team who stays in the least amount of possessions is the winner. Possession ends when offense scores or defense gets the rebound. Defense does get credit for a charge, but there is no possession on a steal. Also, keep up with who is the leading offensive rebounder for the duration of the drill. Winning team and leading rebounder get a drink.

Defensive Drills
1ON1 Auburn 1 on 1 Cones are set up at half court on one side of the floor. 2 players start on the baseline with the player on the outside holding a basketball. On command the players race to half court with the offensive player dribbling the basketball. Once they get around the cone, the two players are playing 1 on 1.

1. Can pass to the coach after getting around the cone and have the defense deny the pass back. 2. Defender is trying to stay between the offensive player in the basket. 3. Challenge shot and rebound. 4. Offense is trying to score with as few dribbles as possible. 1 on 1 Bulldog 2 lines out of bounds on lane line. Offensive player has a ball and rolls it to the opposite wing. Offensive player sprints to pick up the rolling ball on the opposite wing. Defensive player must sprint to touch the opposite block and then closeout. Play live offense gets 3 dribbles. Play until someone scores. 1. Closeouts: high hands to take away shot 2. Defense: hand pressure and back foot 1 on 1 Layer 2 lines out of bounds at lane line. Defense starts with the ball and runs out to place the ball anywhere he wants inside the arc. Defender tries to stand over the ball and box offense out from picking the ball for as long as possible. Once the offense is able to pick up the ball play live 1 on 1 with offense getting 2 dribbles. Play until someone scores. 1 on 1 Loose Ball Coach has ball under the basket. Players in 2 lines out of bounds at lane lines. Coach rolls ball out and players sprint to dive on loose ball. 1. Cant be afraid of contact

Strip and Pressure If a player is undersized, we teach this technique. As the ball is dribbled by the offense with the right hand, the defender will sense the pull-up shot attempt and slaps down the ball on the dribble pick up with his LEFT hand and tries to hit the outside of the ball. Many times the ball will hit the shooters leg and roll out of bounds. If the strip is missed with the left hand, the right hand pressures the shot. *Teaching Points: 1. Hit the outside of the ball in a judo chop fashion. 2. This is easy to do with players who are loose and high with the dribble. 3. Stress the shot pressure if the strip is missed. We dont want an all or nothing situation on the strip. 4. Teach the block out after the pressured shot attempt. 5. BOPCRO=Block out, pursue, chin the rebound, outlet 3on3 Full Court / 4on4 Full Court (3:00 of Tenn Tech Edits) Ball is inbounded by the offensive team. Defense adjusts positions. Offense must make 3 passes in the rear court before crossing the half line. When the ball enters the front, court play is live. Defense must get a designated number of stops in a row before getting out of the drill. 4 Man Shell Sets to Defend Pass and Screen Away, Dribble Penetration, Dribble Penetration with Screening, UCLA cut, Dribble Weave, Ball Screens, Handoffs, Cross Screens, Americas Play, Screen the Screener, Single/Double, Diagonal Screen 4 Man Shell guarding Baseline Penetration (6:45 of Tenn Tech Edits) 3 on 3 Defensive Series Flex, Post Feed Cutter goes baseline, Staggered Double, Double Screen, Screen the Screener, Dribble Weave, Cross Screen, Curl from a Low Stack, Shuffle Cut, Penetrate and Pitch -Down screen, UCLA, Flare -UCLA, Ball Screen

Get Back Drill 5 players start on defense (extra man under the rim) and the rest of the team rotates in for these players. Primary and Secondary floor balance guys are at the guard spots with other 2 players in the corner. 4 players on offense. The defense must get 2 stops in a row. Coach starts drill by passing it to the offense. Offense has :07 to get the shot up at the rim. On shot the 2 offensive players are in the corner go to rebound. The primary floor balance guy sprints back inside the paint on the other end of the floor. Secondary floor balance gets to the semi circle for long rebounds. Secondary Floor Balance stops the ball on the rebound. Primary floor balance will closeout and take the first pass to stop the ball and tries to get his heels outside the paint. Trust rebounders to sprint to the Rim The rest of the possession is a scramble with 4 defenders guarding 5 offensive players. These 4 defenders must get 2 stops to get out of this drill. Coach can have several groups of 4 ready to rotate depending on how much time he wants to spend on this drill. *can do with our zone rules, but must be 5on5. 2on2 Skip Skip (5:15 of Tenn Tech edits, version of it) One offensive player and one defensive player on each side of the floor. Start the drill with a closeout. Offensive player transfers the ball, takes one dribble baseline, and skips the ball. Other player does the same. This allows defense to work on closeouts, hand carries, dead calls, sprinting to help, and cheat steps before the drill starts. Then we play live after 2 skip passes. Triangle Slides Player starts on the lane line with lead foot up. Coach standing behind the block facing the player. To start the drill, coach decks the ball and player yells Stance Coach jab or brings the ball down and player executes a step push in a straight line, when coach brings the ball back up, the player comes back in a straight line ready to challenge the shot. Gives this room so he can have an angle to cut off the drive. Tracing the ball with hand pressure. Coach decks ball a second time and says Drive Player does defensive slide to the wing and back to the lane line extended working on Swing and Lead and Hand Carry When player gets back to lane line extended they execute a closeout. Coach says Back player takes 1 hard step push back and takes 2 slide to wing, Change slide back to the middle to end the drill. Side Closeout, Slide, and Challenge Player starts in the lane and closes out to a coach who is on the high wing (TOK extended). Coach jabs and player step pushes and recovers with high hands. When coach bounces the ball, the defender slides to the corner where they simulate a challenged shot and finish with a box out.

5 on 3 Scramble Offense starts with a player in each corner, each wing, and a player with the ball just beyond half court. Defense gets a player on each block, one player at FT line and 2 players at half court. Drill begins by offense dribbling between the 2 defenders into a 5 on 3 advantage. Once the offensive player dribbles past the defenders at half court they sprint into the play. *Teaching points 1. Defense: Stop ball and protect basket 1st 2. Talk to get matched 5 on 5 Switch and Change Coach will call switch or change during an offensive possession. On switch or change the offense will drop the ball and the defense will pick the ball up to become on offense. The initial offensive team must now matchup and play defense, but they cannot guard the same player who was guarding them. 3 minutes is usually enough to tire the players Switch play on same basket Change transition to the other basket *Teaching Points 1. Communicate matchups 2. Transition def: guard basket, ball, next Beat and Belt Drill Passer with ball on wing and in corner. Offensive player is on weak side block and begins drill by flashing. Defender checks flash and deflects pass from wing then snaps head to defend back cut and deflect pass from corner. *Teaching Points 1. Snap head and look for bounce pass (most back cut passes are bounce passes 5on4 Scramble 5 Offensive players lined up at the 5 spots. 4 Defenders guarding these five players using the Ball, Basket, Next, Next defensive principle. Drill can be done stationary or by giving the offense a 2 dribble limit. Marquette Edits shows Coach Williams explaining this drill in great detail.

MISC. DRILLS
Scrimmage Games One basket games or two basket games really heighten the intensity, pressure, and concentration. Four minute games are good to simulate NCAA media time out stoppages or one half of a high school quarter. Short second scrimmages where you start everything with single digits on the shot clock are good. If the defense gets the ball, let them play out their offensive possession. Special situation work is excellent. Players love it and it makes them think and LOOK FOR WAYS TO WIN. *Teaching Points: 1. It is smart to utilize the balls in the rack sureness concept in their work. 2. Players need to huddle and coach each other. 3. Complaining about officiating is an automatic loss for your team. 4. Reward winners. Off Season Pick-up Games We do not allow the defense the basketball on made baskets. The offense keeps the ball. They can stay and play a half court possession on the ends they scored on or take the ball without inbounds and go the other way. This is pre-determined for the entire game. If there are more than ten players, we encourage cut throat with three to five teams. Make it, take it is our basic rule. You must get a stop to fast break the ball to the other end.

*If you score to tie the game or go up with seven seconds to go, please call a timeout get the game stopped so you can setup your defense: There is always more of an advantage for the defensive team to call a timeout. *If you are up by one point with three seconds or less left in the game, intentionally miss the free throw: The only way they can get a good shot is if you make it. They get to take it out of bounds, and they can run the baseline. If you miss it they have to chase the rebound, they cant control where it goes

Short Clock Execution (12:30 and 28:50 of Tenn Tech Edits) Teams are circled up at in the key area. Coach either rolls the ball or throws it off the glass. Whichever team is first to the ball is transitioning to offense. Other team is transitioning to defense. :09 (or a predetermined) amount of time is put on the clock and the offense has to get a good shot with a short clock. *time can be changed each possession so the players have to check the clock in transition.
