 English Abstract

A Virtual Dialogue with Max Weber:

One Modernity or Many Modernities?

In this virtual dialogue with Max Weber I attempt to clarify the

question if if we have to conceive the modernity as singular or as
plural. The discussion is led by the main sociological concepts of
Max Weber concerning the origin of the Western modernity. I also
take the concept of Axial Age of Karl Jaspers as an important analytical
tool.
My own positions, developed on the basis of Max Weber, can be
stated as following. In terms of the Origin of modernity, there is
only one model, that is, the Western model of modernity. But we
at the same time should understand this original model only as a
rough blue print within which there are many possibilities of combining
the basic elements of the model. It follows from this interpretatin
that the realization of the original model is not confined to one Western
way, but is open to plural ways of combination of the basic moments
of the model.
