Despus de la visita a algunos de los edificios de RCR se hace ms patente la dificultad de poder resumir, en un texto ms o menos extenso, las sugerencias vividas de la apreciacin directa de su arquitectura. Adems, pretender sintetizar en unas pocas lneas lo ms caracterstico de sus obras tambin es ms difcil de lo acostumbrado al hablar de arquitectura ya que, si al acercarse a la obra de la mayora de los arquitectos contemporneos es frecuente poder definir un marco ms o menos consensuado en el que situar sus obras, Aranda-Pigem-Vilalta son de difcil catalogacin. Y eso es bueno. No creo conveniente describir aqu cada uno de los proyectos recogidos en esta publicacin, porque creo sinceramente que cualquier relato al respecto, por muy riguroso que pretendiera ser, parecera ridculo para quien hubiera visitado esos edificios, al igual que sucede cuando, al fin, conocemos de primera mano alguna obra de la que hemos ledo quiz demasiado. Tampoco me parecera sensato recurrir a un texto acadmico en el que una amalgama de citas y referencias buscaran contrastar cada una de las apreciaciones, cayendo as en una espiral violenta de justificaciones. La realidad, y no me avergenza confesarlo, es que abordo estas lneas desde una posicin de absoluta devocin y sana envidia por la arquitectura de RCR, de la que me siento tan admirador como ferviente defensor, y an ms despus de conocer personalmente a Carme, cuya personalidad, sincera y directa, soy capaz de identificar tambin en la materializacin de su trabajo. Sin embargo, veo oportuno apuntar, en defensa de la que me parece obligada visita a la realidad construida, que pese a que las expresivas fotografas que a menudo acompaan la obra de RCR son capaces de transmitir mucha de la emocin de sus objetos arquitectnicos, no dan fe, por ejemplo, de la silenciosa atmsfera que envuelve gran parte de esos proyectos. Podra hablarse, en primer lugar, de la abstracta y casi mstica soledad que se respira en algunos de esos lugares, como la pista de atletismo, el pabelln del bao o el parque de Les Preses. S es cierto que no son siempre lugares vacos o despoblados, pero lo estn a menudo, casi siempre. Es ah donde la arquitectura de RCR se encuentra, creo, con su lado ms ntimo, en el que los lmites entre paisaje y arquitectura son tan ambiguos que se solapan e intercambian, y tambin porque son proyectos en los que el programa suele reducirse, precisamente, a su propia inexistencia, permitiendo que lo nico realmente necesario sea cualificar el entorno. Lejos de retorcidas formalidades arquitectnicas, es ah donde se respira, con ayuda del silencioso y bello entorno natural de La Garrotxa, en el que se encuentran, la ms radical esencialidad arquitectnica. As, las habituales referencias minimalistas con las que se definen estas obras cobran sentido, pero slo al ser consideradas en su ms estricto significado arquitectnico: la exquisitez constructiva.

Following a visit to some of the buildings of RCR Architects, we see just how difficult it is to sum up in a single text, long or short, the insinuations experienced through a direct interpretation of their architecture. Moreover, attempting to encapsulate in a few short lines what can be considered most characteristic of their work is also far more difficult than is customary when speaking about architecture because, while approaching the work of the majority of contemporary architects we are frequently able to come to some sort of consensus on the framework in which to situate their work, Aranda-Pigem-Vilalta are not so easy to categorize. Which is a good thing. I dont think it appropriate to describe here each of the projects included in this journal because I sincerely believe that anything said in this connection, regardless of how rigorous it aims to be, would border on preposterous for anyone who has actually see those buildings, the same as occurs when we finally see with our own eyes a work about which we have perhaps read too much. Nor does it seem reasonable to draw from an academic text in which a hodgepodge of quotes and references aim to compare each of the interpretations, falling into that violent spiral of justifications. In truth, and I am not ashamed to admit it, I am writing these lines from a position of complete devotion and healthy envy of RCRs architecture, of which I consider myself both an admirer and a fervent defender, and even more so after personally meeting Carme, whose sincere and direct personality can be identified in the materialization of his work. It does seem pertinent to point out, however, in defence of what is for me a mandatory visit to constructed reality, that even though the expressive photographs that often accompany the work of RCR are able to transmit much of the emotion of their architectural objects, they do not even begin to touch upon the silent surroundings that envelop many of these projects. To begin with we could mention the abstract solitude, bordering on mystical, that you feel in some of these places, like the athletic track, the bathing pavilion or Les Preses park. It is true that they are not always empty or uninhabited spaces, but in many cases they are. It is here where the architecture of RCR comes face to face with its most intimate facet, in which the confines between landscape and architecture are so ambiguous that they overlap and run together; they are likewise projects in which the program is reduced, precisely, to the inexistence of being, making the only thing necessary that of describing the surroundings. Far from convoluted architectural formalities, it is here where we discover, with the help of the silent and radiant natural surroundings of La Garrotxa where the structures are located, the most radical architectural essence. Now, the usual minimalist references which are so often used to define these works make sense, but only if they are understood in their strictest architectural meaning: architectural exquisiteness.

Y as lo creo porque, sinceramente, si las fotografas de algunas obras, como el pabelln del bao o el espacio polivalente en Riudaura, transmiten una sensibilidad exquisita, las limitaciones del medio fotogrfico impiden acercarse, por s mismas, a la belleza derivada de la seccin constructiva de esas piezas, apreciable ya a simple vista en los planos y confirmada despus de un anlisis ms profundo y una visita al lugar. La decidida opcin por la economa de gestos hace que slo sean posibles aqullos realmente esenciales y sinceros, despojndose al instante, de un plumazo, manierismos retricos o gestos banales. Tampoco es casual que estos silenciosos proyectos tengan una escala muy particular, deca que ntima, en la que la esencia arquitectnica, y quiz porque slo es posible en este tipo de proyectos, es patente hasta en el ltimo perfil de remate, convirtindose, por cierto, en autnticas lecciones magistrales de construccin en acero. Captulo aparte merecen sus casas, exquisitas, en las que el decidido convencimiento de sus autores ha sido capaz de contagiar la emocin y pasin por el hecho arquitectnico a personas corrientes, no necesariamente conocedoras de la cultura de la arquitectura contempornea, pero que han sabido confiar, hacerse cmplices y dejarse arrastrar por la conviccin profunda de que los estereotipos residenciales habituales no son, ni mucho menos, obligados, y que es posible conseguir una arquitectura radical, con maysculas, sin alardes tcnicos ni pomposos despilfarros. Por otro lado, esa idea recurrente de lnea horizontal y pura sobre el paisaje, que se empea en aparecer en gran parte de su obra, y que parece una directa traslacin de esos bonitos dibujos a tinta que empapelan las paredes de su estudio en Olot, no es otra cosa que la ms estricta definicin de una modernidad que junto a parmetros tan esenciales como la abstraccin, esencialidad, transparencia o levedad, acaban de conformar la maleta con la que RCR aborda el viaje hacia gran parte de sus propuestas. Finalmente, parece obligado hacer referencia a una aproximacin a la arquitectura de RCR desde esa, parece que ya consensuada, consideracin de condicin perifrica. No tanto respecto a la realidad fsica que, ciertamente, deja Olot algo alejado de las tradicionales capitales de arquitectura contempornea, sino porque el carcter de muchas de esas obras difiere en gran medida de los estereotipos con los que maestros se han acercado a la disciplina constructiva. Y eso tambin es bueno, porque demuestra as que, lejos de lo que muchos piensan, el trabajo riguroso y honesto encuentra al fin su reconocimiento, de manera independiente y lejos de la fiebre por el xito que a menudo frustra, paradjicamente, el futuro de muchos jvenes arquitectos. Aranda-Pigem-Vilalta apostaron desde sus inicios, como ellos mismos cuentan a menudo, por un acercamiento sincero a la arquitectura, lejos de palabreras y pedantes retricas, primando el buen hacer y dejando que las obras hablaran por s mismas. Sin duda, una excelente (e)leccin.

And I believe this to be so because, honestly, if photographs of some of the works, like the bathing pavilion or the multi-use space in Ruidaura, transmit an exquisite sensitivity, the limitations inherent in the medium of photography make it impossible to approach, by means of photography alone, the beauty derived from the built-up section of these pieces, which is patent in the project and confirmed following a more indepth analysis and a visit to the site. The determined choice of an economical use of movement allows solely for those which are truly essential and sincere, throwing off all rhetorical mannerisms and banal gestures in the blink of an eye. Nor is it any accident that these silent projects are built to a particular scale I would say intimate in which architectural essence, and perhaps because it is only possible in this type of project, is manifest even in the smallest finishing detail, transforming them into veritable master classes in steel construction. The exquisite houses of RCR merit a chapter apart. Here, the determined conviction of the authors has actually infected common, everyday people, not necessarily experts in contemporary architectural culture, with emotion and passion, and they have let themselves trust, participate in and be carried away by the profound certainty that customary residential stereotypes are not at all necessary, and that it is possible to create truly radical architecture without resorting to showy techniques or ostentatious extravagance. Yet, this recurring idea of a line which stretches pure and horizontal over the landscape, which appears over and over in much of their work and which seems a direct translation of those lovely ink drawings that cover the walls of their studio in Olot, is nothing more than the definition of modernity in its strictest sense, which together with such essential parameters such as abstraction, essentiality, transparency and lightness, fill out the case which RCR packs for their trip towards the greater part of their work. And finally, we mustnt forget to mention an approach to the architecture of RCR from the now agreed upon angle of periphery. But not so much as concerns the physical reality which, undoubtedly, sets Olot somewhat apart from the traditional capitals of contemporary architecture, but because the character of many of these works differs greatly from the stereotypes which the masters have used to approach the discipline of building. Which is also good, because it shows that, far from what many may think, rigorous and honest work will be recognized in the end, independently and far from the fever of success which often paradoxically thwarts the future of many young architects. ArandaPigem-Vilalta aimed from the beginning, as they themselves often confirm, for a sincere approach to architecture, far removed from lofty talk and pedantic rhetoric, giving priority to good, solid work and allowing their projects to speak for themselves. Undoubtedly, a fine choice and a choice lesson.

BATH PAVILION
The river flows, the bank follows alongside and the streams pour into it. Flow from the plane tree grove, accompany from the bank, and pour out from the hillside: these form the impetus which defines the pavilion. An intrinsic desire which can be no other: the proportioned and coherent materialization of an idea.

El ro fluye, la ribera lo acompaa y los arroyos desembocan. Fluir desde el platanar; acompaar desde la ribera, y desembocar desde la ladera, son los motivos que deciden la voluntad de ser del pabelln. Una voluntad intrnseca que no puede ser otra: la materializacin proporcionada y coherente de una idea.

PISTA DE ATLETISMO
ATHLETICS TRACK

Emplazada en un entorno natural, esta pista de atletismo permite enfatizar los valores paisajsticos existentes y acercar las carreras atlticas a la naturaleza. La pista se implanta en un claro de bosque de roble albar. Bosque contiguo, bosque a distancia y bosque alejado son las relaciones que se establecen entre la pista y el bosque, potenciando las gradas como bancales pequeos o como taludes entre claros.

Situated in a natural environment, this athletics track allows to emphasize the values of the landscape and bring the athletics races to the nature. The track is located inside of a clearing of the oak forest. Adjoining forest, distant forest and remote forest, relationship between the track and the forest, comparing the stands with little slopes in the middle of the clearing.

A HOUSE FOR AN EDITOR
Libros, dilogos, discusiones, reuniones. Libros, pginas, fotos, textos. Espacios para trabajar, charlar, departir conformados por lienzos que se unen, yuxtaponen, deslizan. El espritu del libro habita la casa y tambin el jardn y transmite su luz durante la noche queriendo llegar hasta el mar que aparece en el horizonte, quiz no tan lejano.

Books, dialogues, debates, meetings. Books, pages, photos, texts. Spaces to work, chat, converse formed by walls which unite, juxtapose, slide. The spirit of the book invades the home and garden, illuminating the night and endeavouring to reach the sea which is glimpsed on the horizon, perhaps not as far away as it may seem.

SPACES FOR LEISURE AND CULTURE

Riudaura es un pueblo pequeo de 425 habitantes, en el inicio de un valle, que no tiene ms edificios pblicos que la iglesia y la plaza del ayuntamiento, porque la escuela se reduce a los bajos de una de sus casas. El pueblo quiere disponer ahora de un nuevo espacio pblico donde realizar las actividades culturales, de ocio y de deporte. Para ello ha dispuesto una finca en la entrada del pueblo, topogrficamente en depresin, y que mira a la iglesia. El reto consiste en cmo cubrir un espacio en el que abrigar esas distintas actividades, en un entorno paisajstico-social tan especial. El nuevo edificio captura su entorno. Se sita como una lnea horizontal que acompaa y muestra el hito vertical de la iglesia, subrayndola. Y se sita transversalmente, para liberar una plaza nueva frente a l, caracterizndola. Tambin se sita vigilando la zona de juegos, bailes y deportes que queda atrs, presidindola. El edificio permite conectar los dos espacios a travs de los portales oscuros y profundos, recurrentes.

Riudaura is a small town of some 425 inhabitants situated at the edge of a valley, with the only public buildings being the church and the town hall square, as the school is located on the ground floor of a private home. The town is eager to have a new public space where cultural, leisure and sports events can take place. A lot has been set aside for the purpose at the entrance to the town. It faces the church, and is topographically lower than the surrounding area. The challenge here is to determine how to fit out a space which is to house these different activities in such a peculiar landscape and social atmosphere. The new building captures its surroundings. It situates itself as a horizontal line which both accompanies and highlights the vertical landmark represented by the church. And it is transversally placed such that it creates a new square opposite it, providing a new characteristic. It is also set in such a way that it presides over the game, dance and sports area behind it. The building serves as a connection between two spaces by means of deep and dark regular arcades.

PARK OF UNHEWN STONE

En el Parque Natural de la Zona Volcnica de la Garrotxa en Les Preses, cerca de Olot, se encuentra un lugar muy especial, un mar de rocas, producto de la colada basltica del volcn Croscat y una ardua labor del hombre en su lucha por conseguir una msera porcin de tierra para cultivar, nivelando y despedregando parcelas y acumulando todas las rocas, piedras y escorias en anchos muros, tmulos y barracas. Su rugosidad morfolgica y tctil retiene la percepcin. El proyecto trata de potenciar la singularidad de este paisaje y de activar el factor sorpresa en su descubrimiento. Una estrecha lnea a trazos, en acero, te permite recorrer el espacio, y el acero, en determinados episodios, sujeta los tmulos que se atraviesan. La forma quebrada de las lneas de acero se contrapone a las orondas masas rocosas y establece nuevos claros en actos iniciales e intermedios.

In the Natural Park located in the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa in Les Preses, near Olot, exists a very unique place a sea of rock created by cast basalt from the Croscat volcano and by the arduous work of man in his endeavour to obtain a paltry bit of land to cultivate by levelling out the land and removing stones from the area, piling everything together rock and slag in thick walls, catafalques and cottages. The pitted and bumpy texture of the stone remains in our conscience. The aim of this project is to uphold the unique quality of this landscape, activating the factor of surprise in its discovery. A thinly sketched line of steel allows us to move round the space, the steel holding up the catafalques in some cases. The broken line of steel exists in contrast to the lofty, rocky masses, establishing new clearings in beginning and intermediate acts.

En un juego de construccin la forma se enhebra a partir de la yuxtaposicin y superposicin de piezas simples. La facilidad en la composicin proviene del mismo tamao de las piezas y la identificacin final de cada una de ellas, formando ya un solo conjunto, proviene de su color. La percepcin espacial del nio es distinta; su punto de vista es claramente inferior a la del adulto y su cabeza erguida percibe perspectivas distintas que amplan su relativa dimensin. Facilitar la orientacin y ubicacin a los 0/3 es una tarea espacial de aprendizaje importante para su autonoma y seguridad. El carcter abierto y fluido de la materializacin de los lmites contribuye a una experiencia de relacin y no de ensimismamiento.

In an adventure of construction, form winds its way through by way of the juxtaposition and overlapping of simple pieces. The simplicity of the composition derives from the size of the pieces themselves and from the ultimate identification of each one of them, forming a single unit originating from their colour. A childs spatial perception is different from that of adults; their perspective is clearly on a different level from that of an adult, and with head upright, they perceive different proportions which widen their relative dimension. Facilitating direction and location for children aged 0 to 3 is a task in spatial learning which is of utmost importance for a childs independence and feeling of security. The open and flowing character of the limits of the nursery helps create an experience of interrelation rather than of self-absorption.

BIBLIOTECA Y HOGAR DE JUBILADOS

LIBRARY AND RETIREMENT HOME
Un programa variado para dinamizar el uso de un espacio libre, generado en un interior de manzana, del ensanche Cerd de Barcelona. Una biblioteca de barrio, como puerta, y un hogar de jubilados como contrapunto y cohesin social con los juegos de los nios, en el patio. La puerta, con la biblioteca, busca la identificacin y la insinuacin del espacio verde y abierto interior. Su altura, anchura y ausencia de pilares (la estructura se resuelve en los dos cuerpos laterales macizos, llenos de escaleras, aseos y libros) tiene una entrada de luz por entre las cajas interpuestas de las salas de lectura, convierte el acceso al patio en un paso filtrado de luz, a la manera como los rboles que siguen la dejan pasar. Nios y abuelos disfrutan de los espacios temticos del patio-jardn. El hogar construye un cerramiento real (como una cinta gruesa que dota de geometra clara al espacio y protege las construcciones en planta baja existentes), de calidad (es fachada y no muro) y evocadora (el vaco que genera entre los lmites, permite crear la ilusin que el espacio verde contina y crece). El tapiz de colores dibujado en el suelo por franjas (saul, agua, arbustos, rboles,...).

A varied program for a more dynamic use of the free space contained inside a city block in the Cerd suburb of Barcelona. A neighbourhood library at the entrance, a retirement home as a counterpoint, and social cohesion with children at play in the patio. The objective of the library at the entrance is to create identification and to hint at the open, green space in its interior. Its height and width, and the absence of pillars (the structure is composed of two solid lateral structures filled with stairways, restrooms and books) are complemented by the entrance of light from among the recesses inserted in the reading rooms, transforming the access to the patio into a filtered passage of light, much the same as occurs with the trees outdoors. Children and the elderly alike can enjoy the thematic areas in the patio-garden. The retirement home creates an actual enclosure (like a thick ribbon which lends a clear geometrical bearing to the space, protecting the existing areas of the ground floor), evocative (the empty space generated within the limits of the patio creates the illusion that the green area continues on and expands), and of manifest quality (it is a faade, rather than a wall). The ground is conceived of as a tapestry of colours in bands (saul -decomposed granite-, water, hedges, trees).

Vivienda unifamiliar aislada Construir una casa en el vaso seco del estanque, que se recupera, de un molino y conseguir que se convierta en el engarce entre ste y la construccin agrcola sobre el campo que se cultiva, es su primera razn de ser. Este brazo, sobre el agua, juega a crear un espacio de superficie ondulante, con profundidades y reflejos. La delimitacin del espacio, por tanto su ser perceptivo, es un continuo de cerramientos horizontal y vertical donde lo tangible y lo intangible funden sus lmites, por lo cual se crea una atmsfera baada por una luz siempre cambiante que permite conseguir, sobre una plataforma lineal perfectamente definida, la creacin de una percepcin espacial siempre mutante.

Separate, single family home The primary aim of this project is to build a house from a mill in the dry bed of the pond, creating from this the setting between the mill and the farming structure in the field being cultivated. This arm over the water creates a rippling surface area with depth and reflection. The space, and consequently the perceptive being, is limited by a continuum of horizontal and vertical enclosures where the limit between the tangible and the intangible are fused together, creating an atmosphere bathed in an ever-changing light. Thus is made possible the creation of a constantly shifting spatial perception over a perfectly defined linear platform.
