Gershwin and Porter M 249 NM 289 These talented and and successful Americans make a facinating pairing. George Gershwin, an immigrant Russian Jew, combined his great song writing (his brother was the librettist) with the desire to be a serious composer of orchestral stature (Rhapsody in Blue) and opera (Porgy and Bess). His contemporary, Cole Porter, socially sophisticated and wealthy beyond, was unusual in writing all his own lyrics to his memorable songs and shows (famously, Kiss me Kate). Both had their lives interrupted by personal tragedy. Enter into the magic of their musical worlds and come and listen to their music, sing their songs and watch their shows. Carl Attwood

John Harris and Christine Booth Miss Bront and Miss Du Maurier 134.1503 4 -6 Oct 2013 M 249 NM 289 In Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bront did something extraordinary. She located the new passion for liberty and equality in a young, plain governess from a charity school and allowed her to tell the story herself. She threw in Cinderella and Bluebeard. No wonder it swept the country. Then Daphne du Mauriers classy re-write did it all over again in 1938. I am passionate about felt. In fact, I am passionate about all textiles, but felt came into my life about sixteen years ago. I had a career in interior design from getting my degree to having my own design company. When the recession hit at the beginning of the 90s my company went the way of many others and I realised that this was no longer the path for me to take. Taking stock of my interests I decided that my knowledge of textiles was sorely lacking so I enrolled on a City and Guilds course in constructed textiles. There was no stopping me now. The next was a course in weaving and then an MA. By this time my interest was in ethnic textiles. I went on a course at the V&A looking at their collection of Central Asian pieces and then to make felt interpretations of what we had seen. Felt? I had never made felt! But my first piece had turned the light on in my head. This is what I had been looking for! Since that day I have been making felt in all its forms. Making felt is addictive. It is such an easy process and yet can be as complex as you wish. I have taught felt making for the last twelve years to everybody from children in Cotswold schools to North American Indians in Canada. Just using wool, soap and water you can create magical hats, comfy slippers, beautiful scarves, roomy bags, stunning artI could go on and on.
