Progettare un hotel diventato oggi uno dei temi pi affascinanti e soprattutto un raro momento di sperimentazione nellinterior design. Andando incontro alle esigenze dellospite contemporaneo, che non si accontenta pi di un servizio impeccabile e del semplice comfort, lindustria alberghiera sperimenta sempre pi, nuove forme dellalbergare. Dal 1993 design hotelsTM, per esempio, captando le esigenze degli ospiti esteticamente pi esigenti, ovvero pi inclini a soggiornare in ambienti sofisticati, dal design esclusivo e culturalmente stimolanti, ha realizzato in tutto il mondo pi di 120 hotel dal concept in cui il denominatore comune lestetica. Il design innovativo, accompagnato da un servizio snello, non convenzionale e da dettagli

curati, insieme ad unidentit distintiva e irripetibile caratterizzano il design affidato ai pi innovativi architetti del settore, come Andre Putman, Matteo Thun, Terence Conan e United Designers. Sono perlopi alberghi metropolitani, quasi sempre collocati nelle grandi citt che per la loro marcata identit architettonica, diventano spesso polo attrattore non solo degli occasionali viaggiatori, ma dellintera comunit. Oltre agli innumerevoli servizi studiati esclusivamente per gli ospiti, come laccesso veloce a internet, programmi di fitness, centri benessere, diete personalizzate, questi alberghi offrono spesso ambienti aperti al pubblico esterno. Designing a hotel has become today one of the most fascinating themes for architects, representing above all a rare occasion for experimentation in interior design. To meet the demands of the contemporary guest, who is no longer content with impeccable service and simple comfort, the hotel industry is experimenting with ever-new forms of hospitality. Since 1993, design hotelsTM, having understood the requisites of the most aesthetically demanding guests, those who tend to choose sophisticated ambiances, of exclusive design and culturally stimulating, has built over 120 hotels throughout the world, based on a concept whose common denominator is aesthetics. Innovative design, accompanied by efficient service, non-con-

ventional design with care for every detail, coupled with a distinctive, unique identity, are features distinctive of the hotel projects commissioned of the most innovative architects in the sector, such as Andre Putman, Matteo Thun, Terence Conan and United Designers. These are for the most part metropolitan hotels, almost all of them located in big cities which, for their strong architectural identity, often become poles of attraction not only for occasional travelers, but for the entire community. In addition to the innumerable services studied exclusively for the guests, such as fast access to internet, fitness programs, well-being centers, and personalized diets, these hotels often offer facilities open to the public at large. nei loro appartamenti, diventano parte della vita metropolitana. Tra gli ultimi hotel della catena, sicuramente uno dei pi interessanti per il design estremamente suggestivo, lo Straf Hotel aperto nel cuore di Milano a pochi passi dal Duomo, dal Teatro alla Scala e dalla Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Protagonista assoluta in questo intervento la materia. Estetizzante, grezza o artefatta, riveste spazi minimali, in cui la tensione verso larte povera diviene magicamente e sorprendentemente spazio lussureggiante, scenografico, suadente, opulento, barocco. Vincenzo De Cotiis, architetto, interior e fashion designer della collezione Haute immagina lhotel quasi come unistallazione, dove il concept sta essenzialmente nella

scelta dei materiali, nella loro traformazione [] mentre il modo di trattarli appartiene a una metodologia progettuale profondamente legata alletica/estetica che deriva dal riutilizzo e dalla ricollocazione in nuovi contesti, di oggetti e componenti di recupero. Per comprendere loriginalit degli spazi dello Straf bisogna conoscere la poliedrica attivit di De Cotiis. Latto progettuale il medesimo sia che si tratti di abiti, di oggetti di design o ancora di architettura. Gli interni respirano e trasmettono tutta la sua originale ricerca portata avanti nella moda. Come stilista utilizza materiali altamente plasmabili, attingendo al vintage recupera pezzi e tessuti depoca rinnovandoli con tinture a mano e attraverso riassemblaggi inediti, tutto allin-

halls and restaurants open out to the city and the guests, no longer protected within shelllike rooms, participate in the life of the city. Among the latest hotels in the chain, certainly one of the most interesting for its truly remarkable design is the Straf Hotel recently opened in the heart of Milan only a few steps from the Duomo, from La Scala theater and from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The outstanding feature of this project is undoubtedly material, which reigns supreme. Aestheticizing, rough or hand-made, it covers minimal spaces in which the tendency toward arte povera becomes, magically and surprisingly, luxurious space, suave, opulent, Baroque. imagines the hotel almost like an installation, where the concept lies essentially in the choice of materials, and in their transformation [] while the manner of treating them pertains to a design methodology profoundly linked to the ethics/aesthetics deriving from the reutilization and repositioning in new contexts of salvaged objects and components. To fully grasp the originality of the Strafs interiors, we should glance at the multifarious activity of De Cotiis. For him the act of designing is the same, whether the subject be a dress, a design object or architecture. The interiors breath and transmit all of his original research carried out in the field of fashion. As stylist he employs highly moldable materials, salvaging from vintage garments old pieces and fabrics,

segna della ricerca e della sperimentazione, mescolarndo stili e tendenze. Lo stesso approccio vale per gli interventi di design a piccola e grande scala. Gli ambienti vengono vestiti di innovativi e spesso sperimentali sistemi materici. Cos il cemento utilizzato per scale e pavimenti viene trattato, lottone ossidato, lardesia tagliata a spacco, le garze invecchiate e strappate a mano. Questultime racchiuse tra lastre di vetro, creano elementi illuminanti che regalano unatmosfera calda a dispetto dei materiali duri, spesso di provenienza industriale impiegati per i rivestimenti. Il connubio tra i diversi materiali, diviene anche il tema distintivo delle varie tipologie delle stanze. Infatti, seguendo lesigenza di svincolarsi dallabituale serialit impersonale degli alberghi, De Cotiis ha

scelto di differenziarle, creando seppur allinterno di spazi gi predefiniti e compatti, ambienti contraddistinti dallutilizzo dellardesia oppure del cemento abbinati allottone brunito. In entrambi i casi sono presenti pareti di specchio dallaspetto volutamente usurato che moltiplicano virtualmente gli spazi. Seguendo lo stesso concetto di dilatzione spaziale, le camere dalle dimensioni contenute, sono state allestite inserendo macro elementi decorativi che oltre alla valenza estetica hanno la funzione di creare prospettive illusorie. La tensione verso il minimalismo, larte povera, il non finito, raggiunge risultati originali; la cura dei dettagli, lo studio di ogni particolare, rende il tutto irreale, pura aparenza. Puro piacere estetico.

renovating them by hand-dying and innovative reassembly, all under the sign of research and experimentation, mingling styles and tendencies. The same approach is used for design projects on both a small and a big scale. Rooms are thus dressed in innovative and often experimental material schemes. For instance, the concrete used for stairways and floors is treated, brass is oxidized, slate is split, pieces of gauze are aged and torn by hand. The latter, enclosed between panes of glass, create lighting elements which diffuse a warm atmosphere in spite of the hard materials, often coming from industrial processes, used for facings. The combinations of different materials also becomes the distinctive mark of rooms of various types. In the urge to escape from the habitual impersonal serial structure of ho-

tels, De Cotiis has chosen to differentiate the rooms by creating, albeit within compact, already established spaces, rooms distinguished by the use of slate or of concrete combined with burnished brass. In both cases, mirror walls of purposely worn aspect are used for the virtual multiplication of spaces. Applying the same concept of spatial expansion, the rooms of limited size have been furnished with decorative macro-elements which, in addition to their aesthetic value, serve the function of creating illusory perspectives. Here a tendency toward minimalism, arte povera, and the non-finito achieves highly original results; care for detail, the study of each and every aspect, renders the whole unreal, pure appearance and pure aesthetic pleasure.
