Are people beginning to violate the civil rights of free speech? Many students abuse the rights of free speech through technology they use it by bullying or trolling on the internet, which is a reason why people began to wonder should schools be allowed to limit students online speech? There are three reasons why it has become a widespread problem, it violates civil rights, and disruptive to learning which can affect a student or teacher lives. Bullying has become a widespread problem that is now affecting family lives, according to a joint ATL and teacher support press release presented in the London UK, April 5, 2009 that 15% of teachers have been bullied by a perpetrator, out of those teachers 39% of them has reduced its confidence and self-esteem which can effect there teaching ability. Also according to a graph presented by Sameer Hinduja and Justin Patchin from the Cyber bulling research center February 2010 schools should limit student online speech because 25% of girls and 17% of boys have been bullied over there lifetime. Although some people might say that these percentages are low too low to have an effect on people they are still affecting the ability of a student to participate during school and they still can grow over the year with many people being able to access internet. Students have been using the term I have free speech because Im an American but have they been using it correctly. According to the Russlyn Ali, U.S. department of education office for the civil rights in October 28, 2010 that a school is responsible for addressing harassment issues that that creates a hostile environment such as using harassment based on race, color, national origin, sex, or disability violates the civil rights law that OCR (the office of civil rights) enforces. According to the Laura w. murphy and Michael-bell, ACLU statement submitted to a subcommittee hearing on cyber bulling protecting youths in an online world ACLU statement Washington legislative office July 15, 2010 although the internet may cause more cyber bulling there was always bulling just face to face, yet there is not much research to suggest the danger to young people are dramatically worse online than offline. Although they say many people abuse free speech through the internet by violating the laws, making widespread problems that can affect many people physically and emotionally and also making a disruption in class and effecting student behavior. Should schools be allowed to limit schools online speech?
