Introduction
TXI Chaparral Steel (Midlothian), located
approximately 30 miles Southwest of Dallas, Texas,
is a technologically advanced steel mill producing
bar and structural products by recycling scrap.
The plant commenced operations in 1975 producing
300,000 tons per year of rebar and merchant bar
quality products.
With melting and rolling mill expansions, the plant
increased capacity to 1,000,000 tons per year in
1982 which included light structural shapes up to 14"
deep.
In 1992 additional melting capacity was completed.
A near net shape caster that was developed by
Chaparral was installed together with a new large
section mill, increasing capacity to1,700,000 tons
per year.
Currently the plant produces 400,000 tons per year
of special bar quality shapes and rebar together with
over 1,300,000 tons per year of structural shapes.
Beam product consists of wide flange up to 24"
deep, standard "I" beams and channels up to 12"
deep, a proprietary range of light Bantam Beams up
to 12.5" deep and piling of the "H" and "PS"
configurations.

The plant consists of two, ultra high-powered, electric

arc furnaces; one 4-strand billet continuous casting
machine feeding the bar mill; one 5-strand
billet/beam-blank continuous casting machine
feeding the medium section mill; and one proprietary
2-strand near-net shape casting machine feeding the
large section mill.
TXI Chaparral Steel (Virginia), located approximately
30 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, is a state of the
art steel mill capable of producing structural shapes
up to 36" deep (including wide flange, standard I
beams, channels, H-pile & Bantam Beams) and
sheet piling sections of the "PZ", "PS" & "PSA"
configurations. The plant capacity is 1,200,000
tons per year.
This plant consists of one ultra high-powered, electric
arc, shaft furnace; one proprietary near-net shape
continuous casting machine; and one high-speed
multi-purpose "X-H" rolling mill.
Both facilities have high volume, scrap-shredding
facilities and are among the most efficient,
ecologically and environmentally conscious,
steel manufacturing facilities in the world. TXI
Chaparral Steels principal customers are steel
service centers, steel fabricators, cold finishers,
forgers and original equipment manufacturers.

General Information
This catalog contains information on structural
sections, with those sections produced by TXI
Chaparral Steel printed with the blue background.
Structural shapes produced by TXI Chaparral Steel
are rolled to conform to the latest ASTM Structural
Steel Specification. Rolling and cutting tolerances
shown in this catalog are in conformance with ASTM
A6/A6M.

Derived design property values have been calculated

from the theoretical dimensions, and generally rounded
to three significant figures. Fillets have been included
in computations of weights and properties.
The information presented in this catalog has been
prepared in accordance with recognized engineering
principles and is for general information only. While
it is believed that all information furnished is accurate,
no person, corporation, association or other entity
involved in the preparation of this publication
represents or warrants that this information is fit or
suitable for any general or particular use or
purpose, or assumes any responsibility in the use
of this information.

Weights of rolled sections are computed on the basis

that one cubic foot of steel weighs 490 lbs. Weights
have been calculated on theoretical dimensions and
rounded to the nearest pound.
Rolling shapes involves factors such as roll wear,
subsequent roll dressing, and temperature variations,
which cause actual dimensions to vary slightly from
the published dimensions, within the permissible
ASTM tolerances. The radii of fillets and rounded
edges are likely to change during the rolling process
due to roll wear. The listed dimensions of k and k1
generally allow for these wear variations.

This information must be used in conjunction with

sound engineering judgement and is intended to be
used only by competent structural engineers,
architects, or other licensed professionals.

Steel Making Process

TXI Chaparral Steel utilizes the Electric Arc Furnace Continuous Casting method in the production of
structural steel products.
Recycled steel scrap provides the raw material for the
Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). After the scrap is loaded
into the EAF, electrodes are lowered through the
retractable roof into the EAF near the scrap metal
charge. Electricity transfers from one electrode to the
scrap metal charge, then back to another electrode.
Heat to melt the scrap metal charge is developed by
resistance of the metal to the flow of the massive
amount of electricity and by the heat of the arc itself.
Oxygen is injected into the EAF to speed up the melting
process. Fluxes and alloys may be added to EAF at
the end of its melt cycle or at the ladle upon tapping
the EAF to establish the chemistry of the heat of steel.
Molten steel is tapped from the EAF to a ladle. The
ladle is then sent to a ladle metallurgy refining station
(LMF). While the ladle is at LMF the chemistry of the
heat of steel is verified to determine that proper alloy
additions were made during the tapping of the heat.
Additional alloys and fluxes may be added at the
LMF if required. Homogenization of temperature
and chemistry of the heat of steel is accomplished by
the bubbling of inert gas through the ladle. Upon
completion of LMF treatment the ladle is then sent to
the continuous casting operation.

The continuous casting or strand casting operation

produces billets, beam blanks, and near-net shape
profiles. These semi-finished products are utilized in
the rolling mills to produce structural shapes. Molten
steel is poured through a slide gate controlled nozzle
on the bottom of the ladle into a tundish. The tundish
acts as a reservoir and releases the molten steel in a
continuous stream through a series of nozzles in its
base. The steel flows out at a steady rate into
oscillating molds. The hollow interior of the oscillating
molds have inside dimensions corresponding to the
width and thickness of the billets, beam blanks, and
near-net shape profile that is being cast. The molds
are contained within water cooled jackets that direct
water flow around the outside walls of the mold. As
the surface of the metal begins to solidify, a thin skin
is formed on the outer edges. During this freezing
operation, the metal in the mold continuously moves
downward as the mold oscillates up and down to
keep the metal from sticking. As the billet leaves the
mold, it enters a secondary spray cooling process.
The metal solidifies from the outside skin toward the
center as it continues to move through the process.
When the metal has solidified, the billets, beam
blanks and near-net shape profiles are torch cut to
length and may be direct charged to a rolling mill or
placed in inventory for rolling at a later date.

Metallurgical Aspects
TXI Chaparral Steel produces Carbon and High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steels for its structural products.
Carbon Steel - Steel is considered to be carbon steel when no minimum content is specified or required for
chromium, columbium (niobium), molybdenum, nickel, titanium, vanadium, or any other element, to obtain a
desired alloying effect and when the specified minimum for copper does not exceed 0.40 percent, or when the
maximum content specified for any of the following elements does not exceed the following percentages:
manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, copper 0.60.
High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel is comprised of a group of steels with chemical composition
developed to impart higher mechanical property values and, in certain grades of these steels, greater
resistance to atmospheric corrosion than is obtainable from carbon steel.
Common Elements found in steel
Carbon

is used as a strengthening element. It is maintained at a level consistent with weldability

and ductility.
Manganese contributes to strength and hardness.
Phosphorus results in increased strength and hardness, and improves resistance to atmospheric corrosion.
Sulfur
higher levels decrease ductility, toughness and weldability, aids machinability.
Silicon
is one of the principal deoxidizers used in steelmaking and contributes to strength and hardness.
Copper
contributes to strength and enhances resistance to atmospheric corrosion.
Other elements such as chromium, columbium (niobium), molybdenum, nickel, nitrogen, titanium, and vanadium
may be added singly or in combination for their beneficial effects on strength, toughness, atmospheric corrosion
resistance, and other desirable properties.
Incidental or Residual Elements In all steels small quantities of certain elements are unavoidably retained
from raw materials. This is especially true of steel produced from recycled steel scrap. The elements of copper,
nickel, chromium, molybdenum and tin are always present as residual elements in steel produced from a scrap
base. Unless the chemical composition of the steel specifies a minimum and maximum of these elements, they
and others that may be present are considered as incidental and are commonly referred to as residual.
Carbon Equivalent To a good approximation, the weldability of steel can be estimated from its chemical
composition. The most significant alloying element effecting weldability is carbon. The effects of other elements
can be estimated by equating them to an additional amount of carbon. The total alloy content has the same
effect on weldability as an equivalent amount of carbon. Several empirical formulas have been devised to
calculate this carbon equivalent. The result of the calculation is expressed as Ceq or CE. The most commonly
used formula comes from the International Institute of Welding and is listed in the supplementary requirements
of ASTM A6/A6M and in Appendix XI of the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code.

Heat Analysis applies to the chemical analysis representative of a heat of steel as reported to the purchaser.
The analysis is determined by analyzing test samples obtained during the pouring of the steel for the elements
that have been specified, or for elements that are required to be reported. Samples representing the first,
middle, and last portion of the heat are used to survey uniformity. The average of the three samples
is reported on the Certified Material Test Report.
Product Analysis A product analysis is a chemical analysis of the finished steel to determine conformance to
the specification requirements and is typically performed by the purchaser. The chemical composition
determined shall conform to the listed chemistry specified in the product specification subject to the
product analysis tolerances in ASTM A6/A6M. Product analysis tolerances are not to be applied to the
chemistry reported on a Certified Material Test Report.
Killed Steel Carbon and oxygen react in the steelmaking process to form a gas. If the oxygen available for
this reaction is not removed (deoxidized) prior to casting, the gaseous products continue to evolve during
solidification. De-oxidation of the steel is accomplished by the addition of silicon. The result of this practice is
"silicon killed steel". The requirement for killed steel is met when the percentage of silicon in the steel is 0.10 or
greater as shown on the Certified Material Test Report for the heat of steel.
Grain Size - Grain size is usually expressed as the average diameter or as a numeric value representing the
quantity of grains per unit area or volume. Two types of grain sizes are commonly expressed:
1) "Austenitic" (high temperature) grain size as determined by the McQuaid-Ehn test ( ref. ASTM E-112).
2) various forms of room temperature grain sizes which are called as-rolled or ferritic/pearlitic
grain size.
TXI Chaparral produces all A992, A572, A588, and Chaparrals A36/A572-50 multi-cert steel to a fine grain
practice utilizing Columbium / Niobium or Vanadium. This practice has shown to provide a Fine Austenitic Grain
Size when the McQuaid-Ehn tests have been performed; however this test is not performed on all material rolled
and inventoried due to the time and cost involved in performing the test.
Charpy V-Notch Impact Testing A charpy impact test is a dynamic test in which a selected specimen is struck
and broken by a single blow in a specially designed testing machine. The energy absorbed in breaking the
specimen is measured. The energy values determined are qualitative comparisons on a selected specimen and
although frequently specified as an acceptance criterion, they cannot be converted into energy figures that
would serve for engineering calculations. Test specimens for structural shapes and test frequency are selected
in accordance with ASTM A673 "Sampling Procedures for Impact Testing of Structural Steel." An impact test
consists of three specimens taken from a single test coupon. The average of which shall comply with the
specified minimum with not more than one value below the specified minimum, but in no case below either two
thirds of the specified minimum or 5 ft.-lbf., whichever is greater. The impact properties of steel can vary within
the same heat and piece. The purchaser should be aware that testing of one shape does not provide assurance
all shapes of the same heat will be identical in toughness with the product tested.

CHAPARRAL STEEL
Version 3.0 January 2003

Metallurgical Aspects (cont.)

Impact testing is performed only when required by the material specification or by request on the initial purchase
order from a customer. TXI Chaparral Steels standard production is typically capable of meeting a minimum
impact value of 25 ft-lbf at test temperatures of 10oF and above. Impact test values can not be certified or
guaranteed without the actual tests being performed. Requirements for lower test temperatures require
review on an individual basis.
Imperfections may be present on the surface of structural shapes. Imperfections which do not affect the
utility of these products are not considered injurious. ASTM specification A6 makes allowance for these types
of imperfections in Section 9. Quality Section 9 states;" The material shall be free of injurious defects and shall
have a workmanlike finish." Note 2 states; "Unless otherwise specified, structural quality steels are normally
furnished in the as-rolled condition and subjected to visual inspection by the manufacturer. Non-injurious
surface, or internal imperfections, or both may be present in the steel delivered a n d m a y r e q u i r e
c o n d i t i o n i n g by the purchaser to improve appearance of the steel or in preparation for welding,
coating, or further processing."
Limitations of Inspection There are a number of intrinsic features in the production of structural shapes that
affect the properties or conditions of the finished products. Those effects cannot always be precisely known. It
is not possible at the present time to identify any reasonable or practical methods of testing or inspection that will
ensure the detection and rejection of every piece of steel that varies from the specified requirements with regard
to dimensional tolerances, mechanical properties, surface or internal conditions. Therefore, it is technically
impossible to give unconditional certification of complete compliance with all prescribed requirements. This
fact is manifest to those having a technical knowledge of the subject and is recognized in applying a factor
of safety in the design of structural steel.

CHAPARRAL STEEL
Piling Handbook

CHAPARRAL STEEL

300 Ward Road Midlothian, Texas 76065 800 . 527 . 7979 www.txi.com

Introduction
Steel sheet piles are structural shapes with interlocks on their flange tips. The
interlocks permit the sheets to be set and driven as a continuous wall which is both
earth tight and reasonably water resistant. Sheet piling sections may be divided
into two types based on their end use: 1) sections used for beam strength PZ
sections and 2) sections used for interlock strength PS sections.
H-pile sections are W shapes with special geometry, i.e., the flange width
approximates the section depth and the flange and web have the same thickness.
TXI Chaparral Steel first produced PS, or straight web piles, on our Large Section
Mill in Midlothian, TX in late 1997. The Midlothian Plant also produces HP8 and
HP10 H-pile sections.
Our new structural mill, located in Petersburg, VA, came on line in 1999. It
produces a full line of PZ sections. This mill also produces the full line of HP10,
HP12, and HP14 sections.

PZ Piling Products

These sections are used for bending or beam strength as expressed by section
modulus - in.3/ft of wall. The Z section, with its optimum distribution of material,
is the most efficient and reliable sheet piling section available for bending
strength. With the interlocks located at the outer fibers of the wall, rather than
at the centerline, the designer is assured of the published modulus.
Chaparrals hot-rolled PZ sections are produced with the popular ball-and-socket
interlock system. This flexible and rugged interlock system facilitates the setting,
driving and possible pulling and reuse of sections.
Chaparral has also incorporated into the geometry of these sections the
research findings of Richard Hartman. Dr. Hartman, in the 1990s, showed that
in addition to the traditional longitudinal bending stresses considered in sheet
piling design, the designer should also take into account transverse bending
stresses. It should be noted that transverse stresses can exceed longitudinal
stresses in poorly proportioned sheet piling sections. Chaparrals application of
Dr. Hartmans research assures the only PZ profiles in the marketplace that have
been engineered to better resist transverse stresses. These section improvements
are covered by Patent Number 6,420,014.
PZ sections are used for both cantilevered and braced construction. End uses
include retaining walls, river cofferdams, braced excavations, tied bulkheads,
bridge abutments, cut-off walls, etc.

PS Piling Products

These sections are designed for interlock strength. The need for interlock
strength develops when sheeting is driven to form circular structures that are
backfilled with granular material. The outward pressure of the fill in the cell
forces the interlocks to go into tension. Interlock strength requirements
increase with increasing cell diameter and/or cell height.
Cellular structures may be single cells used for mooring dolphins or for bridge
pier protection cells. Cells may also be joined together with connecting arcs
to form continuous walls for deep draft bulkheads or utilized as cofferdams to
construct locks and dams on major rivers and also water intake structures.
New designs, using open cell construction are providing new opportunities for
this product line. These are discussed in more detail in the following pages.

H Piling Products

H-piles are commonly used for deep foundations to support structures such as
bridges and buildings, where loads are normally compressive. They are
rugged and can be utilized for driving in soil conditions that other piling
couldnt begin to penetrate. Steels ductility makes H-piles ideally suited for
foundations in seismic areas.
H-piles are also commonly used for soldier beam and lagging construction
in braced excavations such as building and subway foundations.

Open Cell Design, Flat-Web Sheet Piling

Typical Open Cell layout

The need for low-cost, high load capacity docks, bridge abutments, and retaining structures has resulted in the development of a new
type of soil/friction structure using modifications to the existing flat-web sheet-piling design technology. Cellular flat-web sheet-pile
structures have been successfully used for many years for a wide variety of structures including cofferdam and docks. These types of
structures are usually associated with high construction costs due to the difficulty in closing each individual cell. By modifying the
closed cell to an open cell concept, a large number of benefits have occurred resulting in a minimum of 25% overall cost savings
in most applications.
Benefits:
Multiple templates for construction alignment not required.
No close-tolerance connections required.
Closing of individual cells not required.
Toe/Ground support not critical to design.
Shallower driving depths required for stability.
Easier access for soil compaction.
Large axial load capacity.
All Land-Based Construction; therefore eliminating the need for cumbersome, Barge-Based Construction.
One quarter less cost than other bulkhead type construction.
One half of the cost of heavy-duty pile supported docks.
To 1999 about 30,000 flat-web sheet piles have been installed in over 80 open cell structures throughout the country with savings to
the owners in the millions of dollars. This design not only provides a cost-effective solution, but also provides a superior performing wall
or dock structure. Existing open cell wall designs have experienced and withstood the forces and ground motion associated with large
earthquakes with no major damage.

Peratrovich, Nottingham, & Drage (PN&D), Inc., a civil engineering consulting firm specializing in bridge and marine structures, was challenged
by a general contractor to develop a more cost effective means of construction suitable for dock structures. PN&D had been interested in
soil/friction structures which had their formulation in ancient times and which had become the basis for various new adaptations. It seemed
probable that flat-web sheet piles could be used as vertical soil friction anchors for membrane wall systems. The system envisioned was the
"Open Cell" functioning as a horizontally tied membrane.
Because of the absence of technical information necessary to accurately estimate anchor wall resistance, PN&D began a test program using sand and
full size sheet pile sections in a test box, complete with control of vertical pressure. Using a hydraulic jack system, a series of tests were performed
under varying soil densities, pile orientation and vertical pressure conditions.
Findings confirmed that pile interlock size had a significant effect in increasing friction resistance. Test pile orientation, both horizontal and
normal to vertical pressure, helped verify other variables such as available lateral pressure as related to overburden depth and soil density.
Friction resistance often approached two times that suggested in other references.

Sheet Piling Specifications

Material

Handling Holes

TXI Chaparral hot-rolled sheet piling is furnished to the latest

revision of ASTM A328. In addition, TXI Chaparral can supply
sheet piling in high-strength, low-alloy grades ASTM A572Grades 50 and 60, A588, and ASTM A690. All grades are
readily available from mill rollings.

Paired Z-piling: Both sections will be provided with one handling

hole, with both holes at the same end of the pair.

Number of Tests

Pairing

Two tension tests shall be made from each heat in accordance

with the requirements of ASTM A6. In addition, two interlock tests
shall be made from each heat for sections PS27.5 and PS31.

Z-piling sections in lengths up to 70 ft can be paired.

Tolerances

The ability to obtain swing (rotation) between two properly

interlocked sections will decrease with increasing length of the
sheets. This is due to the fact that as the lengths became longer,
and handling becomes more difficult, straightness becomes more
of a factor.

When using steel sheet piling it is necessary to make

allowances for deviations from theoretical exactness. The
basic character of the rolling processes and normal limitations
of mill equipment limit the degree of precision obtainable in
the production of steel sheet piling. Therefore, care must be
taken during installation to assure that each pair of sheets is
being set at the desired driving dimensions.
Interlocks should be continuous and reasonably free-sliding
when threaded.
All steel sheet piling and fabricated connections have an
allowable weight variation of 21/2 % and are invoiced on
theoretical weight. Length tolerance is 0 in. and + 5 in.

PS Piling: Each piece will be provided with one handling hole at

one end.

Swing

Z-Piling: TXI Chaparral does not publish a swing for PZ sections.

As a rule of thumb it might be assumed that a 40 ft length would
obtain a swing of up to 5.
PS Piling: The TXI Chaparral PS sections are designed to have a
minimum swing of 10 in either direction on lengths up to 70 ft.
With longer lengths it is necessary to anticipate a reduction in
obtainable swing of 1.5 for each 10 ft in length over 70 ft.
Interlock Strength

Lengths
Sheet piling sections are rolled and cut to ordered length. For best
economy, the designer should specify the actual length as
calculated in the design process. An exception would be when
many different lengths are required, such as for a sloping wall.
Economy is best obtained in such cases by ordering in one-ft
increments.
All sections are readily available in lengths up to 70 ft from
regular rollings. TXI Chaparral can supply longer lengths,
sometimes in excess of 85 ft. Before ordering lengths exceeding
70 ft check for availability by calling our Piling Sales Office at
800-527-7979.

PS Piling: When properly interlocked, TXI Chaparrals PS27.5 and

PS31 develop a minimum ultimate interlock strength of 16 kips per
inch. Higher strengths are available on inquiry.
The interlock strength of improperly interlocked TXI Chaparral PS
sections or of TXI Chaparral PS sections interlocked with another
producers section is unknown and not recommended.
PS and PZ sections should not be interlocked together. Chaparral
PS27.5 and PS31 can be interlocked with each other. Likewise,
Chaparral PZ sections can also be interlocked with each other.

Splicing
If possible, splicing of Z-piling sections should be avoided. If
splicing is necessary, sections should be ordered full length from
the mill. They should be match-marked and cut at the jobsite.
These match-marked sections should then be spliced together. This
procedure insures section geometry match-up. Splicing of random
sheets could result in setting and driving difficulties.

Durability of Steel Piles

IN SOIL: In 1959 the National Bureau of Standards (NBS)*
initiated a research program to investigate the corrosion of steel
piles driven into soil. This effort was under the direction of Melvin
Romanoff, a longtime corrosion researcher who was well known
for his research in pipeline corrosion.
In 1962, Melvin Romanoff authored NBS Monograph 58, entitled
Corrosion of Steel Pilings in Soils. The following excerpts are
taken from his summary:
Steel pilings which have been in service in various underground
structures for periods ranging between 7 and 40 years were
inspected by pulling piles at 8 locations and making excavations
to expose pile sections at 11 locations. The conditions at the sites
varied widely, as indicated by the soil types which ranged from
well-drained sands to impervious clays, soil resistivities which
ranged from 300 ohm-cm to 50,200 ohm-cm and soil pH which
ranged from 2.3 to 8.6.

In this second report Romanoff concluded:

The observations reported in this paper are in agreement and
substantiate the observations and conclusions based on the results
of the previous examinations on steel pile structures which are
published in NBS Monograph 58.
* Now named the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST)
IN FRESH WATER: There is very little published data regarding
the corrosion of steel piling in fresh water. This lack of data is
explained by the general absence of significant corrosion of steel
piling structures located in fresh water.
Two examples of sheet piling structures with long life are located
in New York:

The data indicate that the type and amount of corrosion

observed on the steel pilings driven into undisturbed natural soils,
regardless of the soil characteristics and properties, is not sufficient
to significantly affect the strength or useful life of pilings as loadbearing structures.

A bulkhead at Blackrock, near Buffalo, NY.

constructed in 1910.

The data indicate that undisturbed soils are so deficient in

oxygen at levels a few feet below the ground line or below the
water table zone, that steel pilings are not appreciably affected
by corrosion, regardless of the soil types or the soil properties.
Properties of soils such as type, drainage, resistivity, pH or
chemical composition are of no practical value in determining the
corrosiveness of soils toward steel pilings driven underground. This
is contrary to everything previously published pertaining to the
behavior of steel under disturbed soil conditions. Hence, it can be
concluded that National Bureau of Standards data previously
published on specimens exposed in disturbed soils do not apply to
steel pilings which are driven in undisturbed soils.

IN A MARINE ENVIRONMENT: The most severe corrosion

of steel in sea water will be on the exposed steel in the splash
zone. The severity will vary depending upon exposure of the
structure for example, a sheltered site vs. a boldly exposed one.
In the splash zone there is constant wetness and protective rust
films dont have the opportunity to develop protective properties.
Corrosion in this area is further aggravated by high oxygen
contents due to oxygen in the air and in the splashing sea water
and corrosion rates increase with increasing oxygen
concentration.

Romanoff continued his research through the 60s. In 1969 he

presented a paper at the 25th Conference of the National
Association of Corrosion Engineers. This paper was based on
corrosion data from 25 piles with exposures from 8 to 50 years in
a wider variety of soil environments and different geographic
locations than those covered in Monograph 58.

This dock was

A bulkhead near Albany, NY which was constructed in 1929.

Examination of typical corrosion curves in a marine environment

indicate maximum corrosion in the splash zone and another high
area of corrosion at low water or a foot or two below. In between
these two areas, in the tidal zone, there may be minimal corrosion.
Oxygen, therefore corrosion, decreases rapidly with depth in the
submerged zone.

Corrosion Resisting Steels

TXI Chaparral Steel piling products are also available in
ASTM Grades A588 and A690.
ASTM A588 (or A709 - 50W), sometimes referred to in the
industry as COR-TEN type steels, is a high strength, low alloy
(HSLA) atmospheric weathering steel containing higher levels of
copper, nickel and chromium than typical carbon structural steels.
The chemical composition of this grade provides enhanced
atmospheric corrosion resistance when exposed in an
appropriate atmospheric environment. This increased
resistance is due to the formation of a tightly adherent oxide
coating that acts as a barrier to further atmosphere corrosion.
This tight oxide is best developed when the steel is exposed to
frequent wet-dry cycles, such as from rain or dew. Exposures
to be avoided, or viewed with caution, are industrial sites with
corrosive fumes and areas along the coasts where there will
be exposure to salt water spray or salt laden fog.
This steel grade is best utilized, in the proper environment, where
aesthetics are important and the tight, dense brown oxide
coating on the bare steel will provide a pleasing appearance.

For more information refer to the latest revision of ASTM

A588 or contact our Metallurgical Engineering representative
at 800-527-7979 or 972-775-8241.
ASTM A690, sometimes referred to in the industry as
Mariner, is a high strength, low alloy (HSLA) steel developed
for use in Marine environments. This steel contains higher
levels of copper, nickel and phosphorous than typical carbon
structural steels. It exhibits 2 to 3 times greater corrosion
resistance to salt water corrosion in the splash zone of
exposed marine structures than typical carbon structural
steels.
To add further design life to the structure, the engineer might
elect to coat the exposed steel surface down to 5 ft below low
water.
