TIRES: ESSENTIAL TO YOUR SAFETY

TIRESARETHE ONLY POINT OF CONTACT BETWEENYOUR MOTORCYCLEANDTHE ROAD.

The size of the combined contact patches of a front and rear motorcycle tire is 100 sq. centimetres, equivalent to approximately two credit cards, so looking after their quality and performance is crucial.
TIRE CHOICE AND USAGE Always choose a tire which complies with local road traffic legislation, and always follow the recommendations of the vehicle's manufacturer, the tire manufacturer or appropriate official bodies. Seek professional guidance when fitting tires that do not conform with your motorcycles original tires. Never use a tire that is incorrectly inflated, at a speed which exceeds its speed rating or with a load that exceeds its load index. Legislation does not permit the use of slick tires, tires with 're-cut' tread patterns or tires bearing the marking 'NHS' (Not for Highway Service) or 'FOR COMPETITION USE' on public highways. INSPECTION Tires must be closely inspected at regular intervals. Uneven wear may be the result of incorrect inflation pressures, overloading or ill-suited mechanical adjustments. Using an underinflated or overloaded tire for a prolonged period of time may lead to irreversible damage which could have serious consequences, even if that tire is subsequently inflated to the correct pressure. Tires should be examined regularly, paying particular attention to: - the tread: look out for embedded foreign bodies, cuts, localised damage and uneven wear; - the sidewalls: look out for impact damage(kerbs, potholes, etc.),cuts, cracking and abnormal deformation; - the bead area (check for signs of rubbing, or damage to the rim). If in doubt, have the inside and exterior of your tire inspected by a specialist at the earliest opportunity. WEAR The principal function of the tread is to ensure contact with the ground. As a tire wears, its ability to clear water diminishes, so it is important to reduce your speed on wet roads. Check your tires regularly for wear by inspecting the tread band. Make sure that wear is even. Tire wear, and consequently the tire's life expectancy, depends on seven main factors, some of which are within the rider's control, such as inflation pressure, load carried, speed and riding style (braking and acceleration). Others are outside of the rider's control e.g. twisty roads, road surface quality and temperature and may call for the rider to adapt his or her riding style accordingly. It is important to remember that excessive tread wear may be the result of a mechanical problem (a warped rim, poor damping, play in the steering or a wheel/frame alignment problem, etc.). Any one of these factors can significantly influence tire life, while the combination of more than one factor will result in considerably higher rates of wear. TIRE PRESSURES For reasons of safety, and in order to optimise the life expectancy of a tire,it is essential to ensure that it is correctly inflated at all times. Running with correctly inflated

dations specified by the vehicle manufacturer are adhered to. If in doubt, refer to the owner's manual or seek advice from an approved dealer of the make of motorcycle in question. When fitting new tires, it is recommended to replace the valve and valve cap which play an essential role in ensuring an airtight seal. REPAIRS In the event of a puncture, only specialists have the required expertise to undertake the necessary inspection of the tire's interior and exterior with a view to deciding whether or not a tire is reparable. The injection of a puncture sealant via the valve must only be considered as a partial and temporary solution. RUNNING-IN PERIOD A running-in period of approximately 100km is necessary for the tire to reach its full performance potential. During this period, start to gradually lean through corners at moderate speeds. WARMING UP TIRES Each time you use your motorcycle, it is important to cover the first few kilometres at a moderate speed in order to allow your tires to get up to their working temperature and benefit from optimal grip. MIXING FRONT/REAR TIRES All our recommendations and advice exclusively concern the fitment of MICHELIN motorcycle tires at the front and rear. Except when recommended to do so by the vehicle's manufacturer, you are strongly advised not to mix radial and cross-ply scooter tires. Doing so might result in unstable handling.

WHY CHOOSE MICHELIN TIRES?

tires in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations also makes a significant contribution to straight-line and cornering handling, including under braking and at low speeds. Running under-inflated tires can lead to premature wear, irreversible damage and, occasionally,a sudden loss of air.Air is gradually lost from tires. It is therefore essential to systematically check tire pressures before use. When checking the pressures once a journey has started, remember that the tires will be hot. This causes the tire pressures to rise, so never release air from a tire that has just been used. If the pressure is found to be lower than the recommended value, it is necessary to add air. Bear in mind, however, that the correct pressure of a hot tire is 0.3 bar higher than the pressure recommended

for the same tire when cold. After checking, remember to refit the valve cap which, along with the valve core itself, ensures an air-tight seal. TIRE FITTING AND REMOVAL Fitting and removing tires are jobs for professionals. Improper tire fitment or removal may damage a tire and jeopardise the rider's safety. When replacing a tire, the following precautions must be observed: - check the condition of the tire and rim; - replace the original tire with a tire of the same size; - check that the speed rating and load index are adapted to the use to which the tire is to be put; - in the case of certain types of motorcycle, ensure that any fitment recommen-

HANDLING AND STORAGE Always store tires in a ventilated,dry,temperature-controlled place, away from direct sunlight and protected from adverse weather conditions. Keep tires away from chemicals, solvents and hydrocarbons likely to affect their properties. Keep tires away from sharp objects that may damage the tire (metal, wood, etc.). Keep tires away from sources of heat and electrical discharges.
