The correct way to refer to literary and secondary works

1. The titles of novels, plays, collections of poetry, collections of essays, collections of short-stories, etc. should be underlined if you are writing by hand; in a typed version, they should appear in italics: e.g. Garca Mrquezs Cien aos de soledad Borgess Ficciones Calderns El alcalde de Zalamea Nerudas Veinte poemas de amor y una cancin desesperada Garca Mrquezs Cien aos de soledad Borgess Ficciones Calderns El alcalde de Zalamea Nerudas Veinte poemas de amor y una cancin desesperada 2. The titles of individual poems, essays, stories, etc. should appear within inverted commas but should not be underlined: e.g. Borgess Poema conjetural Borgess El hombre en el umbral Quevedos En crespa tempestad del oro undoso

3. Note the difference in the use of capital letters in English and Spanish titles: Cien aos de soledad, La casa verde BUT The Sound and the Fury, The Tempest this difference applies to all titles, whether of novels, poems, or whatever, although it is legitimate to capitalise the words in the title of a Spanish-language journal or newspaper: e.g. El Pas, Revista de Occidente 4. Note that Mrquez is a very English way to refer to the writer known among Spanish-speakers as Garca Mrquez. Similarly, Llosa doesnt mean anything to a Spanish-speaker; Vargas Llosa does.
