Running head: WEEK ONE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

What is ethics? If you follow all applicable rules and regulations, are you an ethical person? According to Websters dictionary, the definition of ethics is the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation. My definition of ethics is a set of values and morals that you as a person establish in order to make conscious decisions based on what you as an individual believes to be the right thing to do regardless of rules and regulations. Following rules and regulations do not necessarily make you an ethical person because not all rules and regulations are ethical. Many people feel that companies have been unethical over the years such as Enron due to their corruption and immoral behavior. However, most companies have rules and regulations that can be used as a guide to the basic ethical behavior that is expected. Most companies will agree that in order for a company to remain successful and profitable, they must have some ethical foundation. According to Chapter 2 of The Financial Environment, it states Behaving ethically means much more than simply following rules and regulationsit requires making personal judgments about right and wrong (Emery, Finnerty, & Stowe, 2007). Ethics are based on the personal beliefs of the individual not on guidelines made by a company.
