There were many memorable scenes in the scarlet letter showing Dimmesdales true self.

One of his most memorable scenes in the story was when he confessed his sin while standing next to Hester and pearl on the scaffold in the market place. Throughout the story we saw Dimmesdales health deteriorate because he was keeping his secret locked up for so long while Hester had been punished for her sin. When he finally confessed, he stood up and shows everyone to see that like Hester he has a red symbol on his chest. He then falls on the scaffold and after a brief exchange of words he dies. A significant quote from the story would be After exhausting life in his efforts for mankinds spiritual good, he had made the manner of his death a parable, in order to impress on his admirers the mighty and mournful lesson, that, in the view of Infinite Purity, we are sinners all alike. It was to teach them, that the holiest among us has but attained so far above his fellows as to discern more clearly the Mercy which looks down, and repudiate more utterly the phantom of human merit, which would look aspiringly upward. Without disputing a truth so momentous, we must be allowed to consider this version of Mr. Dimmesdales story as only an instance of that stubborn fidelity with which a mans friendsand especially a clergymans will sometimes uphold his character; when proofs, clear as the mid-day sunshine on the scarlet letter, establish him a false and sin-stained creature of the dust. This quote is important because it is saying that we are all equally sinners and how some may sometimes go to great lengths to defend their character against even the clearest proofs that they are a deceitful, sinful person, showing an important lesson learned by reading the Scarlet Letter.
