Race Excel Assignment Olga Britantchouk Professor Becky Boesch Race is a tricky subject amongst a grip of individuals.

The three graphs attached show what the government, after conducting a census, has shown the United States racial make-up to be. The first graph simply shows the racial make-up of the US of individuals who classify themselves as one race for example: Asian, white etc. It shows that the majority of the people in the United States classified themselves as white. This is particularly interesting to me because who is really purely just white? Its baffling how many people, including myself, classify them to be that when no one really is. It was also shocking to me that the percent of native-Americans, key word native, was the smallest slice of the pie on the whole pie chart. They are truly the only real Americans and there are barely any of them in the census! The next major parts of the pie chart belonged to the Black/African American classification and the Hispanic/Latino classification. Although diversity is extremely important why are there only three primary races in this country? It concerns me that we do not have as much diversity as the media, our teachers, and everyone around us tries to portray. We must all accept one another and one of our goals being in college and getting an extended education is to accept and thrive in diversity but how can that be when the statistics show that we are not as diverse as we once imagined our country to be? The second graph shows the racial make up of the US and the people that classify themselves as more than one race but shown through a different type of graph. The big

chunk of it goes to the people that are counted as white. The native Americans once again are barely seen in this graph and it is primarily dominated by African American and Hispanic. This graph shows a different perspective from the first graph because it forces you to visualize it in a bit of a different way and it is scary how severe the racial gaps are. In the third graph Racial make-up of the US from 1900-1990 a linear relationship is used to show the statistics amongst the racial make-up of the United States. This is pretty disappointing because the gap is drastic especially in the early 1900s. It simply says white or non-white and in the early 1900s the other races were simply just uncounted and there is no data. Either way, the more disappointing thing is the clear ratio that this graph displays. The other or non-white races are always about 50,000,000 behind the white race. The graph remains without slope until about the mid 1900s. This is alarming but makes sense because before the mid 1900s the white supremacy and discrimination was going on and it was only until both world wars ended that the flow of other races began to emerge into the US. The linear graph is the best representation of this because it shows that it was only several decades ago that our country was so terribly behind with the fact that diversity is a good thing, and it is through diversity that we can grow as a country. Overall this assignment was challenging because its not easy to just take data of people and their race and place it into a graph representation. No person has only one race. Its always easier to classify someone as one race but in all reality we are all a mix of different background cultures and races and placing our selves into racial group really

does nothing and gets this country no where. If we can forget about the color of our skin or the way we do things and focus on being regular people and all being Homo sapiens We can accomplish great things. We shouldnt get grouped by our race or place lines between one race or another, we should all come together and just be what we are, people, and strive to do our best.
