Fenugreek appears to lower blood glucose levels. It also seems to help protect against cataracts, which are common problems for diabetes patients. The high levels of phytoestrogen in fenugreek may protect against certain types of cancers. Fenugreek may help slow the progression of HIV and other chronic viral illnesses. It must be emphasized that research into the medicinal benefits of fenugreek is in its early stages.

In Trinidad most of the population is unaware of this. We started making dried methi in packages now. Although it is widely used by all the Indian Restaurants the vast majority of population remains unaware of its pleasant taste, benefits and usage. Its dried seeds also have medicinal value and have been used traditionally to treat a variety of conditions. The seeds contain alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins that are responsible for its biological activity. Fenugreek supplements are generally safe to use, although gas, bloating and diarrhea may occasionally occur. They may also interfere with certain diabetes, blood-thinning and pain medications. Consult a doctor before using fenugreek and its supplements for medicinal purposes. However you are safe to use as part of your kitchen. Diabetes
Fenugreek seed extracts possess insulin-like properties and may help correct the metabolic changes associated with diabetes, according to a study published in the April 2008 issue of the journal Phytotherapy Research. Although, the results of the study suggests that fenugreek has potential for clinical application, the claims have been proven in laboratory animals only. Talk to a physician before using fenugreek supplements to treat diabetes.
Liver Health
Some other animal studies, such as the one published in the October 2008 edition of the journal Cell Biology and Toxicology, have shown that the polyphenols in the fenugreek seeds can protect the liver by preventing the pathological changes that occur in the liver due to alcohol consumption. As with diabetes, these claims have been proven in animals only and clinical trials are lacking. Use the supplements under the supervision of a doctor only.

Cancer
Fenugreek seed extracts can inhibit the growth and proliferation of cancer cells in the breast and induce programmed cell death of the tumor cells. The seed extracts may have significant chemo-preventive action against breast cancer, according to an article in the August 2005 issue of the journal Cell Biology International. More research is, however, needed before fenugreek extracts replace the existing breast cancer treatments. Fenugreek extracts also exhibit considerable anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties in animal models, according to a May 2001 article in Phyto-therapy Research. The authors of the study hope that similar results might be seen in animal models as well. However, more research is needed. Until then, use fenugreek only under the supervision of a doctor.
Cholesterol
Fenugreek seeds help reduce cholesterol levels in the blood and liver, preventing the formation of cholesterol gallstones, according to a study in the November 2009 issue of the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology. Drugs.com also states that fenugreek can help lower serum cholesterol and

1. BAD CHOLESTEROL Scientific research suggests the use of fenugreek for bad cholesterol lowering. Animal studies showed that a supplement of fenugreek seeds is able to dissolve cholesterol gallstones in mice on a normal diet. Clinical studies have revealed that fenugreek reduces elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in human blood. A supplement may lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), VLDL cholesterol with no change in HDL levels (good cholesterol). Many experts believe that the high amount of steroid saponins and galactomannan fiber contained in this healing herb induces hypo-cholestero-lemia in both animals and humans. 2. DIABETES Fenugreek seeds help lower level of glucose in the blood on type1 and type2 diabetes mellitus patients. The hypoglycemic effect is explained by the presence of several compounds in the seeds. The secretion of insulin from the pancreas is stimulated by an amino acid (4-hydroxyisoleucine). Substances such as gentianine, trigonelline, and carpaine are alkaloids

Another natural substance called fenugreekine inhibits glucose transport and slows down food transit time. The slower the food is digested, the longer it takes for the sugar to enter the blood stream. Fortunately, this medicinal herb does not reduce sugar levels in healthy people who want to use it for its other curing properties! 3. BREAST MILK PRODUCTION Fenugreek is a very good galactogogue that is able to increase volume of breast milk in women who aren't producing enough milk! A steroid compound called diosgenin found in the plant is chemically similar to the female sex hormone estrogen and works as a growth stimulator for mammary glands within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. 4. CANCERS Studies suggest a potential protective effect of fenugreek seeds against some types of cancer. Some natural compounds contained in this potent healing herb are able to neutralize chemicals that cause breast cancer and prostate cancer. Saponins inhibit cancer cell proliferation and migration. 7. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Fenugreek is commonly reported to lower blood pressure. But to tell the truth, there is no evidence that this herb has hypotensive properties. According to some reports, this natural remedy may raise blood pressure. In fact, fenugreek herbal supplements reduce potassium levels in the blood which can contribute to high blood pressure!

8. LIVER INTOXICATION Fenugreek helps protect the liver against alcoholinduced damage, says S. Kaviarasan, lead author for a 2007 study published in Cell Biology and Toxicology. Fenugreek seed polyphenols has been proven to increase levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver. This therapeutic action not only protects but repairs liver damage. 9. MUSCLES AND FAT TISSUES Fenugreek extract mimics the anabolic effects of testosterone and helps athletes build their strength. This medicinal plant promotes lean body mass and reduces fat tissue. 10. RESPIRATION PROBLEMS Fenugreek is traditionally used to soothe respiratory complaints. It is thought that it can help reduce bronchial congestion by decreasing mucus production. practices used all over the globe. Although fenugreek is well known for its ability to treat womens health concerns, there are several specific fenugreek benefits for men too. Increase Libido Chinese herbalists believe that the fundamentals of a healthy sex life lie in the kidneys, and that anything that promotes kidney health contributes to a heightened libido. Since fenugreek detoxifies the body and fortifies the kidneys, the herb has long been used as a natural aphrodisiac. Additionally, studies have shown that fenugreek has naturally occurring hormone like properties that may increase sexual desire and increase testosterone in a mans body. To start, consume 500-2,000 milligrams per day of fenugreek, adjusting the dose accordingly once the desired results are achieved. Lowering Cholesterol Men have also found fenugreek helpful in lowering their cholesterol levels. Due to the binding effects of the saponins in the herb, less cholesterol is absorbed into the arteries once it is administered. Always consult with your primary care physician first, however, because high cholesterol presents a very dangerous situation if not controlled properly. As a

result, prescribed medications may be needed to lower these levels quicker. If it is deemed okay to try fenugreek, the recommended dose of this herb is 610 milligrams up to three times daily to aid in lowering cholesterol levels. Relieving Constipation Fenugreek is very rich in galactomannan, a fiber that has a sticky and binding property, making it useful in treating chronic constipation. Keep in mind, however, that not everyones body has the same response to this herb, so trying various concentrations and forms of fenugreek will help in determining which one is best for you. Start by grinding the plants seeds and sprinkling it on food. If the taste is too strong, steep the ground seeds in boiling water and drink the liquid two to three times a day. Remember to drink plenty of water when battling constipation. Decongestant Men, in particular, often suffer from congested lungs and a mucousy throat. The properties in fenugreek work side by side with the body to help keep the respiratory system clean and functioning properly. Mucilage, which is a thick, gluey substance found in fenugreek seeds, helps soothe irritated tissues in the throat and lungs. It also helps to flush pollutants out

of the sinuses. To begin this regimen, take 950 milligrams of fenugreek, using the whole seeds or prepared capsules two times a day with meals. Prostate Health Several encouraging studies on the use of fenugreek benefits for men in the area of prostate health have been done recently. One study by Johns Hopkins University in 2010 found that the herb appeared to constrain pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancer cell lines. Since fenugreek is rich in selenium, it has a positive effect on the bodys ability to ward off these diseases. Crush the seeds and boil them in water, or drink a pre-made tea. Consuming ten to fifteen milliliters over a 72-hour period has shown to inhibit negative cell growth in the prostate and keep it healthy, too. The proper dosing of fenugreek always depends on numerous factors, such as a persons age, health history, and other conditions. Be sure to read the product labels thoroughly before administering this herb, and consult with a health care professional before using it. Fenugreek benefits for men are very practical and inexpensive to obtain, and can be worth the time and effort.
