Introduction to Stylistics PROMETHEUS UNBOUND By Aeschylus

Mars shall glow tonight Artemis is out of sight This first couple of line obviously connotes the absence of light, goodness and direction, Mars is chosen by the poet because of its brightness that can match the brightest stars, while Artemis, a goddess, is for bounty and also associated to light. Why Artemis and not other figures or symbols else? Given the mere explanations considering the field and tenor of the poetry is chiefly Greek Mythology that is why Artemis is selected, Jose F. Lacaba, a Filipino publisher, also has given different a deeper implication wherein M in mars and A in Artemis have something to do with Lacabas authentic message. Rust in the twilight sky Colors a bloodshot eye Sky and eye could be deliberately used by the author, instead of any words that might, as well, rhyme, because the words chosen for these poetics lines promote the readers need for deeper use of imagery since the lines and the words rust, twilight, sky, color, bloodshot and eye are mainly symbolic and encourages mental images, which, indeed, just imply dimness or omen. Metonymy applied in the poem makes it more figurative. Or shall I say that dust Sunders the sleep of just? Syntactic deviation is present if this will be compared to the first two couple of lines. Both the initial words of the second lines in the pairs which are colors and sunders are similarly predicates in structure beginning with the singular present s tense of the verb. Notwithstanding, the first introductory lines personifying Mars and Artemis are lines with complete thought and are bona fide independent clauses (with complete subjects and predicates), making it different from the following lines, though deviating the norms in the lines structures and patterns in the stanza. Moreover, the ending words eye and sky, and dust and just are chosen more preferably for the observance of the obvious rhyme scheme aa bb cc dd Punctuation deviation is also evident which is an utterance of uncertainty. Hold fast to the gift of fire! I am rage! I am wrath! I am ire! How about saying that I am rage, wrath and firesyllabication matters and the words used are emphasized to merely express anger; rage and wrath and ire are all synonymous to extreme anger. I am is repeated to create a pattern aside from saying that I resent or I am resenting or any other synonyms also because of the end rhyme.

Introduction to Stylistics

Pronoun-Linking Verb-Predicate Nouns, used as adjectives, vaguely yields not standard sentence format or structure but metaphors, figurative comparisons, however, are grammatical deviations. Critically analyze this: I am rage! I am wrath! I am ire!

The vulture sits on my rock Reeks of death, death, death. Severe word abuse because of its repetition--death, death, death--purposively creates lexical and punctuation deviations just because this emphasized death which is the central topic or idea of the entire masterpiece. Vulture over other kinds of birds or symbols of death is used because of its horrible feature of eating the corpses flesh and also a bird of Zeus (also mentioned in the context) finished Prometheus. I am rage! I am wrath! I am ire! I am earth, wind and sea! The only lines in the entire selection ending with exclamation points are these metaphorical lines which create punctuation deviation in order to reinforce emphases. Poetically, order and choice of words consider the rhyme and meter. And strike the chill hand of Death with flaming sword of love. Many would argue, claiming that this is phonological deviation because these lines seem not rhyme perfectly. Nevertheless in phonology, even though you will use the British, American or any accents given to English, these two words would still rhyme and sound alike. The words Of and Love definitely rhyme. Mars, Artemis, Rust, Colors, Or, Sunders Hold, I, The, Licks, Emancipations, Reeks Death, I, Kisses, That, And, Death, Orion, Retreats Thrust, Unbounds, To, A Of course, semantics and lexicon are carefully and correctly used by the poet, but it is another poetic style classified as acrosticthe authentic message of this poem lies on the initial letters where all of these lines are derived from. Language deviation is profound; Prometheus Unbound is not entirely English. If the initial letters are to be read downwards, it spells a popular Tagalog slogan. The first letter of every line spelled Marcos Hitler Diktador Tutaa favorite protest chant in anti-dictatorship rallies. Using his own opponents massive propaganda machinery, the frail poet had deftly executed literary jujitsu. Published and circulated nationwide in 1973a year well into martial law when scores of Marcos opponents had already been killed, tortured and jailedhe had accomplished more than just a mere vandalism on the monolith of Marcos; Lacaba had cracked the fearsome faade and had emboldened others to do the same.
