Doctors doing research on patients was unethical, but in their defense, many people in their time period were uneducated and would refuse simple tests if they heard words such as malignant, cancer, tumor, etc 4 Radium is a highly radioactive metal that glows blue and was used to treat cancer in the early-mid 1900s. Radium was used as it would kill the cancerous cells, but the issue was that it also would kill healthy cells and possibly cause cancer as well.

Chpt. 3 7. An immortal cell line is a cancerous cell line that is able to go through the cell cycle infinitely. Chpt. 4 4 HeLa came from the name Henrietta Lacks. 8 I do think it was a good idea for him to send the samples to his colleagues as that helped further their research Chpt.5 2 According to Ethels cousins, she was jealous of Henrietta Chpt. 6 3 These studies made black people mistrust doctors because they didnt ask for consent.

Chpt 7 2 Henrietta probably couldve gotten better treatment if she was white because during that time period, racism was very prevalent.

Chpt 13 1 2 Chpt 14 7. Henriettas name was faked as Helen Lane and they also falsified other parts of her life. Henriettas cells helped stop polio by assisting in creating the vaccine. They reproduced indefinitely and could be used in place of human cells

Chpt 15 4 Chpt 16 1 2 Its ironic because the white family members decline that the black people are actually family members. No, they should be required to give consent as it is their body to do with as they wish. Joe was physically abused by his family

Chpt 17 8 Informed Consent means that the patient gives the Doctor consent to do whatever it is they need to do.

Chpt 18 9 The public responded criticizing the idea of hybrid cells because the media put ridiculous ideas that the public responded to.

Chpt 19 8 Prison changed Joe to be less violent and he became a muslim Chpt 20 3 Stanley Gartler discovered that the eighteen most commonly cell cultures were infected with HeLa Many people didnt believe Gartler and continued to waste money.

Skloot using Deborahs voice to start/end the book puts a more personal feeling to the book rather than it being a 100% science book. Afterword 1.
