Prologue 2. Mitosis is the sexual division of a cell.

Mitosis is beneficial as it provides diversity and cells that are not identical. Chpt. 1 1. Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman born in 1920, whose cancer cells were immortalized by being grown in a laboratory. 5. Cancer is dangerous as it is a non-functioning cell that divides uncontrollably and can take up room where normal cells are required Chpt. 2 2. Doctors doing research on patients was unethical, but in their defense, many people in their time period were uneducated and would refuse simple tests if they heard words such as malignant, cancer, tumor, etc 4 Radium is a highly radioactive metal that glows blue and was used to treat cancer in the early-mid 1900s. Radium was used as it would kill the cancerous cells, but the issue was that it also would kill healthy cells and possibly cause cancer as well.

Chpt. 3 7. An immortal cell line is a cancerous cell line that is able to go through the cell cycle infinitely. Chpt. 4 4 HeLa came from the name Henrietta Lacks. 8 I do think it was a good idea for him to send the samples to his colleagues as that helped further their research Chpt.5 2 According to Ethels cousins, she was jealous of Henrietta Chpt. 6 3 These studies made black people mistrust doctors because they didnt ask for consent.

Chpt 7 2 Henrietta probably couldve gotten better treatment if she was white because during that time period, racism was very prevalent.

5 Chpt 8

HeLa allowed scientists to grow cells in a lab and test medicines without a human subject.

3. Benevolent Deception is purposely not explaining something to someone in order to not upset them Chpt 9 6 Chpt 10 3 Cootie was Henriettas cousin. Chpt 11 3 Some people dont want autopsies as they believe their body shouldnt be messed with after death and some do because they dont care. 4. I think it is great that some people donate their bodies to science. I would donate my body if there was a need for it. Chpt 12 7 I think they believe that she was trying to say that they shouldnt have used her body without her permission The amount of churches probably signifies a high Christian population.

Chpt 13 1 2 Chpt 14 7. Henriettas name was faked as Helen Lane and they also falsified other parts of her life. Henriettas cells helped stop polio by assisting in creating the vaccine. They reproduced indefinitely and could be used in place of human cells

Chpt 15 4 Chpt 16 1 2 Its ironic because the white family members decline that the black people are actually family members. No, they should be required to give consent as it is their body to do with as they wish. Joe was physically abused by his family

Chpt 17 8 Informed Consent means that the patient gives the Doctor consent to do whatever it is they need to do.

Chpt 18 9 The public responded criticizing the idea of hybrid cells because the media put ridiculous ideas that the public responded to.

Chpt 19 8 Prison changed Joe to be less violent and he became a muslim Chpt 20 3 Stanley Gartler discovered that the eighteen most commonly cell cultures were infected with HeLa Many people didnt believe Gartler and continued to waste money.

7 Chpt 21

Chapter 21 was called Night Doctors because it was believed that some doctors took people

15 This is an example of irony because many people have become very wealthy from her cells Chpt 22 8. Henriettas real name became public knowledge after a story about her and her cells. Chpt 23 3. I think it is more important to research for the benefit of mankind 4. Yes, It was a good thing. Chpt 24 7. Deborah began researching her mothers cells after receiving a science book. Chpt 25 5. Giving patients legal ownership of their cells is good and bad. Good because it protects rights, but bad as it would severely limit research. Chpt 26

3. Deborah asked for the medical records because Rebecca asked to view them.

Chpt 27

1. Because they are cancerous cells that do not require a body to survive 2. Deborah didnt trust Rebecca because she was used to people asking her questions about her mother and thought she was just trying to scam her.

Chpt 28 9. Cofield was a criminal who tried to steal money from the Lacks family. He got involved after calling Deborah. 10. Deborah talked to a lawyer. Chpt 29 3 Chpt 30 3. Zakariyya seems uneducated and angry. 10 Deborah gives Zakariyya a picture of Henrietta Chpt 31 3 Chpt 32 5 5 Chpt 33 11. Yes, it was inhumane. 12. Because every person has a set of human rights and this violated that. Chpt 34 2. Because she kept pressuring Deborah about her mother Lengauer tells Deborah that the cells are cancer cells. He believes they should be compensated. She promised to let them read over it first. Deborah hoped that her mother and family would get recognition for their contribution.

Chpt 35 1. They are cousins 5 Chpt 36 1. Gary believes that Henriettas cells are there because god wants to have her help people. Chpt 37 2. Deborah decided to go back to school to pursue a science degree. 5 Chpt 38 3. Skloot using Deborahs voice to start/end the book puts a more personal feeling to the book rather than it being a 100% science book. Afterword 1. Deborahs death made her brothers more serious and behaved. 2. The Lackses can sue. Final Qs 1. I believe they should have a share of the profits from HeLa. 2. a. 1951 Cells cultured b. 1952 Cells shipped via mail c. 1952 HeLa Factory d. 1952 HeLa used for Polio Vaccine e. 1973 HeLa used to study Salmonella f. 1984 HeLa used to prove HPV and Cancer link g. 1986 HeLa used to study HIV h. 1989 Enzyme discovered that prevents cells from dying i. 1993 HeLa used to study TB j. 2005 HeLa cells used in nanotechnology research 3. I think genes and genetic material should not be patented. Instead used for research. 4. The science, racism, and bioethics stand out to me the most as it seems that we, as a people, are improving and getting better in these fields. (i.e. less racism, more scientific understanding, more refined bioethics) 5. I definitely enjoyed the book. It had a good mix of both science facts and information along with a personal story connected together. Deborahs health kept her from returning to school Deborah begins to praise with him and suddenly acts better.
