5. What were the best aspects of Countdown to Finals?

- Broad coverage of topics - practice exam questions and slide show - They presenters knew about the core clinical conditions and they gave very good moral support -Presenters were reassuring -good overview focusing on the basics needed for exams -Decent synopsis of 5th year, enthusiastic presenters and encouraging sessions -Variety of subjects covered -Relevant topics Good location Exam practice questions at the end Appropriate detail -Brilliant teaching. Always useful and pitched at the right level. the lecturers were always willing to answer questions. Plenty of chance to practice slideshow. It was really nice to have regular lectures in the run up to finals, provided me with quite a bit of reassurance when I was revising! -The range of topics covered allows good overview -A wide variety of subjects were taught and in different ways making it remember able - the paperwork lecture at the end of the series was really really helpful -great topics relevant to finals with interactive cases. -Very finals based - relevant to fy1 -Thorough and comprehensive lecture programme that covered all the important part of the curriculum -Great lectures, well presented and good content -Relevance to finals -Very professional delivery and well organised. Content was relevant and interesting and presented in an engaging manner. Fantastic resource for finals. Thank you -Well structured programme with reasonable level of knowledge being taught. The amount of information is well delivered at an appropriate level. -Slideshow, ECG teaching -Teaching from current fy1's was invaluable. The sessions were well organised and coordinated by Jonny Grek. The mock sideshows were really good. -Learning from FY1's -Core information taught by people that had recently sat finals. It was useful to see what depth of knowledge we needed as well as how to translate this to relevant aspects in FY1. I found mutiple mneumonics taught were very useful for remembering information. -Slideshow practice exams and the paperwork seminar. -I enjoyed the revision lectures and slideshow quiz practice at the end helped consolidate the knowledge. Enjoyed the paperwork session but maybe could have had a few more of these sessions. -Really relevant lectures which helped me revise core conditions. Really good that the programme was weeks before finals. -Good overview of all core topics, relevant to exams and F1. Thanks to all involved

/var/www/apps/conversion/tmp/scratch_3/122381372.doc

-good concise summaries from people who had recently done the same thing. good focus on the bits that med students find the most difficult -A general overview of topics made things seem much more achievable. -good well organised -common f1 topics -case based approach after an overview slide show at the end to consolidate learning -covered all the core topics -good over view of core topics and good slideshow practice -the clinical scenarios with F1-specific management -done by people who had sat the same exams a year ago, pitched at the right level. very useful. -Felt it prepared you well for finals. Felt more confident that passing 5th year was achievable. -Covered wide variety of core subjects, to the point, -Relevant topics with specific focus on sitting finals -Regular hourly lectures at fixed times of the week so we knew we were going to receive teaching. Very well organised. Very useful. -The whole course was excellent, covered a vast amount of material by people that still remember what finals are all about! The best lecutres were- ECG and Cardiovascular ( by lucy someone?!), top 5 presentations, renal and fluids. -useful as a guide to what absolute core knowledge for each body system should be and a good place to both start revision and last minute check to see you've covered enough. Built up my confidence a lot. -everything was made relevant to the exams, particularly with osce scenarios. It was all pitched at the right level for passing finals. -Really relevant and was good to know what level of knowledge we needed as haven't really had much other teaching this year!! -The paperwork and slide show sessions -The lectures were quite informal, which made them more enjoyable to take part in. There were plenty of opportunities to practice questions and slides. -Slideshow practice -Taught by people with recent experience of the finals and fy1. Good timing for the exams and I feel people put a lot of effort into the programme. I think Jonny Grek deserves a medal for his hard work - plus he was very funny! -Useful overview of variety of subjects with an fy1 approach to management. -Content was very well matched to our syllabus -Being able to ask questions. F1 preparation. Dropbox. -The encouragement from junior doctors

6. Can you identify areas where Countdown to Finals may be improved?

-Less repetition in lectures
/var/www/apps/conversion/tmp/scratch_3/122381372.doc

-more exact information for example some lectures did not state the dose of the drug and how long to give it for i.e. post MI which would have been very useful -Have the slides uploaded quicker and send a message out to everyone to save the files into another folder on their own computers because everyone keeps changing the slides when they save into their Dropbox folders -some of them were a little repatitive, many started with going through ABC which although important did get a little over killed by the end! -Better venue, more osce practice questions -ways to improve accessibility - i.e. difficult for students to attend if repeatedly placed at other hospitals slightly further away -Sometimes (eg ECG lecture) the lecture was in a lot of detail and I was a bit confused by it - this may be just because it was a really weak area of mine. -Brilliant, thank you very much to everyone! -I felt it was really useful perhaps similar consistent format for all lectures would be useful -It's a long shot and random because actually the whole thing was brilliant but the only negative was being away on placement and having to come back (I still did tho because it was worth it) so maybe get some of the dgh F1's involved?? -nothing -Endocrine lecture did not take place. -No, just hope we can live up to the great lectures this year -No -Generally very well, maybe some more OSCE tips -Fluids lecture -No I thought everything was really useful. -more forms to fill in lectures throughout the year not just in the form filling lecture. -Although I thought drop brox was excellent, some people did not realise to copy files and so files would often disapear. It may be worth mentioning this to people in future. Endocrinology lecture was not repeated although everyone turned up. -More OSCE examples. Less review of last years OSCE, but more potential scenarios. -More OSCE scenarios or roleplays. I found my OSCE was quite difficult to do and maybe that's something countdown can help address. -Fy1 Lecturers having access to computer password in the kayberry lecture theatre so that lectures can run more smoothly. -N/A -some more osce info and paperwork info, the bits we had were really good and very helpful, so maybe slightly more would be good -A larger venue may help -referring a patient -some lectures didn't go ahead and some were duplicated -highlighting possible osce stations as and when is appropriate for them to be integrated into teaching -more osce related practice -Some a little shorter -no

/var/www/apps/conversion/tmp/scratch_3/122381372.doc

-Maybe to add in higher level things occasionally, but it was useful to stick to what we needed to know. -Not repeating lectures, more scenario based lectures (paperwork/ late shift ) -None -I was in Bradford with many other students for a large proportion of the lectures which made it difficult to attend mainly due to time issues but also due to radiology teaching. It would be useful if Leeds FY1s could develop the programme jointly with Bradford FY1s so that the same topics are covered in lectures at both sites, that way students would have more of a chance of attending, especially those who have to stay in Bradford and also those on placement in DGHs where it may be easier to get to Bradford during the evening rush hour than Leeds. If this isn't possible then it would be useful to speak to Colin Avison regarding the radiology teaching at bradford which was compulsory to attend but not as useful as countdown to finals lectures. Because they were on the Tuesdays and because count down to finals lectures were not considered scheduled teaching, the course organiser at Bradford refused to budge and even try to re-arrange teaching at her end. As such we could not attend countdown to finals lectures because of a clash in times. -the was some variation in the standard of lectures. Ones that could be improved were neurology. -Would it be possible to put the presentations on the vle rather than drop box. -a bit more on paperwork. or maybe split the paperwork session in to 2 as it was quite long and a lot to cover all at once. -Not really. Thought it was amazing and really appreciate the time everyone took to do it! -Venue size! -The dropbox folder was a great idea, but people didn't realise that editing or deleting files meant that it was altered in everyone's folder. Might be worth explaining that at the start to prevent having to undelete the files each time! -OSCE scenario's increased -I think it was overall very useful. Sometimes there were slight inaccuracies in info but these were very few and far between. -More explanation about and how it is a shared desktop as people used to often delete the files making them unavailable for other people -No! -F1's who had experience in the area they were teaching were obviously more confident about teaching us and were better able to answer questions. Try to get people who had worked in the areas to teach them. -Maybe putting them a bit later in the day or soon several lectures at different sites so everyone can attend
