List of Similar Vocabulary between Indonesian and Tagalog

Indonesian is the sole official language of Republic of Indonesia. It is spoken natively by around 35 million people and as a second language by another 140 million. In addition, Indonesian is often considered a reformed version of Malay language, with a high mutual intelligibility between the two languages often comparable to Spanish and Portuguese. Apart from Malay, the rest of its vocabulary are mainly derived from Arabic, Dutch, English, Sanskrit, and (Min Nan) Chinese. Indonesian is also spoken among Indonesian immigrant communities in Australia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. Tagalog is one of the two co-official languages of the Republic of the Philippines (the other being English). It is spoken natively by around 25 million people and as a second language by another 65 million. Tagalog is well-known to be the most Spanish of all Asian languages, due to the fact that a large number of its lexicon is derived from Spanish language. Apart from Spanish, the rest of its vocabulary are mainly derived from Sanskrit, Chamorro, English, Malay, and (Min Nan) Chinese. Tagalog is also spoken among Filipino immigrant communities in USA, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, UAE, Canada, and Japan. ________________ Why are these two languages highly similar to each other? They both belong to the Malayo-polynesian subgroup of the Austronesian language family. Language family is a term coined by linguists so that they can group languages with similar history in the same category. For example, FrenchItalian-Spanish belong to the Romance language family, while Dutch-English-German belong to the Germanic language family. Please note that this list is neither complete nor adequate. This is also not a list of cognates. Rather, what I am presenting here is a list of words that sound similar in both languages. Hence, even though the Tagalog word Beranda (lit. open porch) may sound like it originate from the same source as its Indonesian counterpart (also Beranda), the root words are different: Indonesian borrowed it from the word varanda in Portuguese, while Tagalog borrowed it from the word veranda in Hindi. My name is Thomas Andrikus, and I am among the 35 million native speakers of Indonesian. I am not an expert in languages, nor do I have a diploma in it. Hence, with whatever limited knowledge I have of Tagalog, I compiled this list by consulting dictionaries and websites. If there are any mistakes in spellings, word definitions or annotations, please let me know by sending me an e-mail to missing.samurai@gmail.com
