EDITOR’S CLIP - 29 January

The dust has now settled after the historic

the first Social Media President in history.”

He’s the first one to understand and harness the

power of sharing and communicating through social
media platforms to not only get out his message, but
to energise a group of Americans into action. Of
course it wasn’t Barack alone - it was his campaign
team that focused on and realised the power and
reach that different web technologies could bring
them. It wasn’t just one social media site used either.
It was a case of everything working together,
complementing each other, and promoting the same
singular message of the ‘change’ that could take
place if people on these sites helped elect Barack
Obama as President of the United States of America.
The Obama inauguration was everywhere. All the
groups that were set up to support Obama and his
presidential campaign pulled their weight and
achieved history, in terms of garnering support from
the youth and the digitally savvy ‘next generation’.
His top groups were on Facebook; LinkedIn;
YouTube; Flicker; Twitter; Myspace; and many
others. His official Facebook group, excluding the
other groups individuals set up to support him, ran up
close to nearly four-million members, and some 500
000 wall posts. His ‘connections’ on LinkedIn and his
image views on Flicker run into unfathomable figures
when it comes to social networking presence. He is,
inarguably, the first Social Media President.

Now, will this be replicated in South Africa over the

next couple of months? We have already seen the
emergence of some social media aspects, such as
Facebook groups for the Democratic Alliance and
Helen Zille posting her video clips on YouTube... while
the other political parties seem to have, well, not come
to the party. Several DA Facebook groups have popped
up, with the official group having some
11 000 members. The ANC launched a new website to
entice voters and share its party manifesto, as well as
recent videos; discussion forums; SMS updates; email
updates; and some serious issues as well. Not bad
going. COPE also seems to have asserted its social
media presence with a very comprehensive Wikipedia
page, which sums the party’s manifesto up well.
However, its Facebook group has only 160 members
(as of 21 January), which is not all that positive. I am
not convinced we will hit the figures we saw in
America, proportionally measured of course- but we
are moving in the right direction. We are seeing
examples of South African political parties that are
following in the digital media direction, and attempting
to captivate the minds of a new generation of voters.
That was, after all, a large contributor to Obama’s
landslide win.

cellular phones is also picking up
pace, albeit slower than in some
other global markets. Some
examples of such advertising caught
my attention of CNNMobile.com,
when I was subscribing to news
alerts ahead of the Obama
inauguration earlier this week.
Firstly, there was a small banner
advertising another of CNN’s
products, followed by an ad for a
prominent retailer. Some of the
obstacles that have been
encountered so far, are no doubt
linked to the technical and business issues that
companies are grappling with at present. The market
is clearly poised for significant growth, but only if all
the relevant parties, specifically advertisers and
publishers, can get on board.

Consumers are becoming increasingly empowered -

the advance of so-called digital natives. These are
individuals who have grown up with the internet –
and the applications designed to give consumers
more of a say in how they connect and access the
web. These changes and developments have
transformed publishing and advertising over the past
five years. Many mobile media analysts have argued
that mobile is the way to connect with the next billion
and the growing middle-class of the world. In several
editorial columns in Media Update and totallyMAd last
year, we highlighted that in many African countries,
mobile is the first interactive screen.

come, as publications raise the bar and lead the
industry through innovation, commitment and,
above all, passion. 2009 also sees the MPASA

these and other industry challenges. 2009 is also
going to be an interesting year for digital terrestrial
