THE IOP

Your presentation is based on a topic you choose and prepare In many ways this IOP represents a slightly less daunting task than the IOC you will be responsible for next year It is a part of the course you can afford to really let your creativity show, so take advantage of it

WHAT IS IT?

It is based on a prepared oral presentation lasting 10 to 15 minutes Topic and format is up to you, but work in consultation with your teacher On the exam day you will present our topic with no interruptions When you have finished your teacher may ask you 1 or 2 questions. This discussion may be between you and the teacher or may possibly involve the whole class Your topic should be of particular interest to you

POSSIBLE AREAS OF INTEREST

Cultural settings of the work(s) and related issues Thematic focus Characterization Techniques and style Authors attitude to particular elements of the work(s) such as character(s), subject matter Interpretation of particular elements from different perspectives YOUR IDEAS SHOULD COME FROM ONE OF THE ABOVE AREAS OR A COMBINATION OF THEM. YOU NEED TO DEMONSTRATE DETAILED UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORK AND INDEPENDENT THINKING AS WELL.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

A critique of your own writing that has been produced in the style of one of the literary genres studied An explanation of a particular aspect of an authors work The examination of a particular interpretation of a work The setting of a particular writers work against another body of material, such as details on social background or political views A commentary on the use of an image, idea or symbol in one text A comparison of two extracts, two characters or two works An account of your developing response to a work (your journal entries) The presentation of two opposing readings of a work A monologue or dialogue by a character at an important point in the work Reminiscences by a character from a point in later life

TWO CATEGORIES OF IOP

Formal analyses or critiques of a particular idea or theme More informal approaches involving such thins as in-role-character monologues and so on TO CONSIDER: 1.You need to select your topic and then have your teacher approve it. 2.Vary your content to show that you are an independent thinker. 3.You are not going to be assessed on your skills in theatre this is a literary course. You can do a dramatic presentation and earn good marks even if you are not particularly skilled in acting. Likewise you can earn low marks even if you are dramatically skilled. Conclusion: Plan Well.

A)Knowledge and understanding of the work(s)

9/10 = very good knowledge and understanding of content and most of the implications of the work(s) presented (HL exhibits excellent) 9/10 = delivery of the presentation is effective with very good strategies used to interest the audience (HL exhibits highly effective)

B)Presentation

C)Language
9/10 = The language is very clear and entirely appropriate with register and style consistently effective and suited to the choice of presentation (HL is the same)
