About this ebook

Surprising events unfold as an earthly messenger is asked by Spirit to deliver a message during her own extraordinary experience in a Peruvian Ayahuasca Center. Her journey coincides with the message she has been asked to deliver, this realization coming with intense and clear directions from the spiritual plant medicine - Ayahuasca.

Now challenged with delivering these spiritually guided visions and dreams to a defensively guarded individual while remaining focused on her personal reason for being in the Jungle so close to the Amazon River: the intended honoring of a dearly departed friend.
Gift for the Messenger is the storytelling of a life's creative and magical experience through their trust and acceptance of the unknown.

Gift for the Messenger - Fireflysue

    A Calling

It was September and the fog, the numb feeling, was lifting. Maria, my dear friend had died this past February. While I could not yet truly get close to my grief, I could feel myself slowly moving toward creating a private ceremony to honor her. Maria had known all too well my longing to experience Ayahuasca and to do so in an area where she, the Ayahuasca vine, grows.

Ayahuasca had caught my interest some eight years before, after reading a shaman’s story of growing up in Peru. Little did I realize, it was the beginning of Ayahuasca gently calling me. It was not something I took lightly nor did I want to rush the experience. I wanted to do my homework… so to speak.

The more I read and the more I stayed open, the more I felt Ayahuasca had something for me. She is after all a teaching plant. Somewhere along the lines of exploring, I found myself trying to commune with all the plants around me, questioning myself as to what wisdom that particular plant might hold.

While it is not my first choice, you might be surprised as to how powerful a ceremony one can create in a backyard of North Hollywood. Yes, I now lived in North Hollywood; I had rented a room from my recently departed friend Maria and her partner. This had been her beautiful garden and, of course, she was everywhere.

I loved making ceremony in such a heavenly space with the ancestors all around me. (I was nurtured by making prayer bundles: a tradition shared with me and other women, by a Native American Sage, before beginning a sweat lodge ceremony. The Lakota tradition, was such a gift to me.) I spent many evenings in prayer.

My life felt so unsettled and filled with pain when I first began praying. So much so, I remember feeling lost and not knowing what to pray for or about. Then one day while sitting on the ground in the back garden, the grass was moist, the air was cool, and the sun was out. I was feeling poorly regarding my prayers when from somewhere deep within Mother Earth came a loving gift. While I could feel it through the earth I was sitting on - it was also words, ever so gently telling me to pray for clarity; the tender words created a very humbling and joyful feeling of support. And so, clarity became the intention of my prayers.

Since her death I had felt Maria touch me three times. Once, when I was frantically looking for something that had belonged to her, then finding it and feeling her give me the biggest hug. I could physically feel the energy of her arms around me! Again, when I was very frustrated about a situation, she put her hand on my shoulder, offering patience. So much calmness came over me. The third time was when I had made the decision to go on this trip. I began to doubt myself and was feeling a bit of anxiety. Again, I felt her hand on my shoulder and she told me I was ready, that I had done a lot of work to prepare and not to be scared. With that I moved forward - as open as possible.

Idid not take the drinking of the vine of death lightly. (Ayahuasca is a strong hallucinogenic brew made from plants grown in the jungle. The stems from a caapi vine are cut, cleaned, pounded with a mallet, and then boiled in water with leaves from the chacruna plant for long periods.) So, I slowly took myself off any meds. At this point I had been off the meds for 4 months and all seemed well. If anything, I felt centered and more clear than ever. I started researching retreats in Peru.

Over the past few years, I had casually checked out retreats, not sure if I would go to Pucallpa or Iquitos. I knew I very much admired the Shipibo. Their connection to Ayahuasca is so lovely and is reflected beautifully in their art. They are in the area of Pucallpa. However, Iquitos is the largest city in the Amazon rainforest, accessible only by boat or plane. Over the years I had noted which retreats were still in business, never looking at prices, schedules or reviews. Now it was time to get serious.

My dream was coming true and I could begin to look with real intentions. I had a lot to do to prepare. I had to decide which retreat location! I narrowed it to 2 retreats in Iquitos and 1 in Pucallpa. From there, I would look
