1. ORIGEN DE LA OBRA
El tratado De Officiis (Sobre los deberes) fue compuesto por Cicerón el año 44 a. C., fecha que marca —con el asesinato de César— el inicio de una nueva etapa en la vida política de Roma. En el trascurso de este mismo año Cicerón había redactado el tratado Sobre la vejez, cuando él mismo había alcanzado la edad que en su época se consideraba como el umbral de la última etapa de la vida humana. En los primeros meses del año 44 a. C. había escrito también el primer libro del tratado Acerca de la adivinación, que terminó más tarde; en la segunda parte de este escrito se encuentra la descripción del cadáver de César tendido en el suelo en la curia de Pompeyo.
Los últimos años de la vida de Cicerón están marcados por la redacción de textos filosóficos: su vocación filosófica, como escribió Valentí Fiol, es tardía y viene empujada por el alejamiento de la vida pública que le vino impuesto por las circunstancias del momento: es su nueva forma de servir a la sociedad humana; sin duda su experiencia política fue un buen cimiento para esta segunda forma de actividad.
De Officiis, dedicado por Cicerón a su amigo Pomponio Ático, está escrito como fuente de conocimiento del comportamiento humano, y destinado a su propio hijo, según indica en la conclusión del escrito. Dice Antonio Fontán, en la biografía póstuma sobre Cicerón, que «quizá el sueño de Cicerón fue convertirse en el mentor político de Pompeyo como más tarde Séneca lo fue de Nerón, y como antes Aristóteles lo había sido de Alejandro».
La expresión latinización de la filosofía griega
es también fontaniana; a mi modo de ver, el toque romano lo proporciona la insistente presencia de la utilitas en este tratado.
La profunda helenización del espíritu ciceroniano se manifiesta claramente en frases tales como: «El nombre de bárbaro
debe darse a las costumbres, no a las lenguas».
La fuente de inspiración de los libros I y II del tratado está principalmente en el filósofo estoico Posidonio[1], discípulo de Panecio de Rodas (180-110 a.
