About this ebook
These poems-- three in Spanish and two in English—are not mine. They quote, adapt, translate, interpret the words of others. But isn’t that what all poems do?

Al Lector
Dear Reader:
BLANCO SOBRE BLANCO
POEMA DE COLÓN
SOR JUANA’S DREAM
DEAR READER:
These poems are not mine. They quote, adapt, translate, interpret other people’s words. But don’t all poems do that?
Two of them are in English.
THE DREAM, by Mexico’s 17th Century poet-nun, Juana Inés de la Cruz, is a complicated Baroque poem with intricate syntax, elaborate conceits and mythlogical entanglements. My aim, in this translation, which excerpts lyrical passages that can be read and undersood wthout resort to notes, has been to highlight some of the poem’s beauties.
MARTÍN FIERRO, by José Hernandez, is a frontier tale in imitation gaucho
style. I have translated the mock-epic opening, the elegy for the gaucho’s lost golden age
, and the account of the dramatic events that ended his way of life, turning him into an outlaw. I don’t attempt
