This book is dedicated to all the parents of teenagers who pray daily for their children to become what God desires for them and all of the teachers, coaches, and organization leaders who willingly give so much of their time to influence that outcome.

I still remember and thank God for several teachers who greatly impacted my life, both in church and the public school system.  Most of them are already in heaven and I hope they are smiling down on me, or at least laughing at my attempt to act the part of the characters in this course and show the way to teenagers.

    Introduction

There are many choices in life. Some choices will be good and some bad. The decisions as to which choices to make are often based on what we have learned from friends or our own experience at that point in our lives. But there is much help for us in the decision process from the past and present lives of other people.

In this book you will journey with Dudley, a one year old Cockapoo, and his young owner through a series of adventures to gain the wisdom to follow the Dream of God for you personally. You will meet people from the Bible who define the choices to be made. Your guide will be Nimbah, the Keeper of the Cave of Wisdom. But you can count on Dudley to take the lead when his owner is slow to decide.

The journey begins in a cave in New Mexico where you will meet Elijah, the prophet, and Nimbah. There are others with you on the journey, the I AM Tribe. Together you form the Circle of Fire.

    It’s time for an adventure!

    A Note from the Author

Having spent most of my career developing and implementing corporate change, the opportunity to teach this age group during our church’s Wednesday night program, was an even greater challenge. For adults, youth can be extremely frustrating. They can seem wild at times and genius at other times.  The reality, however, is that this time in their lives will greatly determine the path they will follow.  Sadly, many will turn to the destructive forces in the world seeking fun, wealth, and power.  This book, hopefully, will help keep them from taking the dark path of the world.

I call this a behavior intervention series.  An intervention as I use it here is an attempt to make a change in behavior at a specific time in a person’s life. Youth are beginning to make the choices that will determine their path in life. God has a plan for each life, a plan which in this series is God’s Dream. My hope is that each young person that reads this series will find that Dream.

Change is a popular concept now.  But knowing what we are changing to is as important as changing. Middle School students are changing rapidly: physically, mentally, and emotionally.  What they are changing to is often determined by peers, television, movies, family, and sports.

To those young people who read this series of life changing stories, let me write a few words. You are now at a time in your life that can lead down many paths. Some paths will lead to the dark side of life, for some, even suicide. For others, the path chosen will lead away from family and your home town to travel the world or to give your life work in service to others. Some of you may take a lifetime to find the Dream of God for your life, while others may find it quickly.

When you find the Dream, the joy of the relationship with God in that Dream will be like a cup overflowing with love. For me it took most of my life to realize that Dream. Hopefully you will find your Dream early in life. Listen to your heart and learn the wisdom to choose the correct path in life. You are given many examples in history to help you gain wisdom. You will not be alone in the search for your Dream: God wants you to find it and provides guideposts for you.

The Notepad developed is designed to be a road map for your life. Follow it with commitment and all of your heart. God will be there to help you. A lesson Journal is available on Lulu.com to record personal learning’s.

The website dudleyscave.com was developed to assist teachers of the series. The site contains lesson plans, crafts, recreations and video links. As a student, you are encouraged to go to the web site and watch the videos available for each chapter.

    Prelude

    cave.jpg

The morning air was cool as I began my walk that day in the rolling hills of New Mexico. My 13th birthday had just passed and this trip with my family was to be a celebration of my becoming a teenager. The desert was beautiful with its wonderful, long vistas of scrub brush and countless ravines.  In the distance I could see a cowboy riding his horse along a line of fence posts. A chill went through me as I envisioned Indians riding across the valley. Relax, I told myself. The days of war parties and scalping are gone.

Acoma Pueblo, the oldest continuously inhabited Indian Pueblo in North America, was visible farther to the south. We had tried to visit the pueblo the day before, but the tribe was having a closed ceremony. Virtually unchanged for centuries, tribal families have lived atop the 357 foot high rock, without benefit of water, electricity, or most other conveniences. The mesa, as the hills in the area are called, made the entire area seem sacred. It was simply an awesome view and a great place to spend the day.

There was a tall, bolder laden mesa in front of me and I knew Dudley would want to climb to the top. Dudley was my dog, a Cockapoo, which my family had obtained to keep me busy and out of trouble. So far, the tactic had only partially worked as Dudley seemed to get into more trouble than I. Almost a year old, Dudley was full of mischief and energy.  He had wonderfully curly hair, long ears, a piercing look in his brown eyes, and a mustache that all together made him appear like royalty from the 1800’s.  I called him Sir Dudley because of the aristocratic sitting stance he would take when he stared at me as if I should be doing something important, such as playing with him. My Dad called him Dudley Do-Right after some cartoon he had watched as a teenager, many, many years earlier.

Dudley was at my side and excited to be climbing in this strange land.  It took all my effort to keep up with him
