    Dedication

    To my wife, Maria.

Thank you. Without your support and patience, I would not be the man I am today. It is my desire to love you the best I can and these meditations are a result of seeking God’s will for our lives together.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the Mohican Church of the Brethren for their support and encouragement. Pastor Chad Palmer’s encouragement to pursue my God given gifts was essential to this project.

Without my wife Maria I would not have been led to this study in the first place. It is because of you that my desire to love like Christ has grown tenfold. Thank you for being you and for loving me through thick and thin.

I could not have published this without the help of my good friend Roger Hayes. He has been a constant source of encouragement for many years. It is due to his editing and feedback that this work reads as clearly as it does. We’ve always made a great ministry team. Thank you Roger for your support and help with this project.

I want to send a special thank you to Andrew Lawlin for sharing his talent in the development of the cover. Thanks for your testimony and allowing God to use you through media.

Most of all I want to thank God for giving me the strength and energy to put this together. He is my everything and a constant rock of strength. Thank You Jesus for giving me new life and a desire to serve You.

    Preface

    The Truth About Love

The simple truth about love is that love is a mystery. Our modern American culture is very confused when it comes to love. Ask anyone you run across to define it and you’re sure to get at least 10 different answers. Some might say love is a feeling of peace and serenity. Others, that love is a special connection that cannot be put into words. Some automatically assume love is a physical, sexual relationship. Even more will define love as like.

Love is not only confusing to non-Christians, but to believers as well. The confusion of its meaning is not limited to the young, the old, the single, or the married. It is for this reason that I have decided to clarify the mess and unclutter the many confusing definitions we encounter of love.

So…what is love? The Word of God, the guide for our lives, is a love story in itself. In short: God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). The story of the gospel (or good news) as it unfolds in our lives defines love.

Love is sacrifice, and a choice; it is an action and a command. Are there good feelings that come with love? Absolutely. All the time? Nope. Love is sometimes doing what we don’t want to do. It is sometimes acting in ways contrary to what our human nature desires.

1 John 4:10 says, In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

To understand love we must understand the gospel. Simply put, all of mankind was born into sin (Rom. 3:23). God, being holy in nature, demands perfection to enter His kingdom. Being born sinners, we can never attain perfect obedience. This is why He sent his only Son to Earth. He lived among us perfectly, obeying God’s every command and showing us the way to the Father.

Jesus Christ, the promised savior of mankind, died a sinner’s death even though
