About this ebook

The poems are very different from what you will usually find in a book of children’s poetry. While a few are very funny, all have a special purpose: to teach the meaning of “difficult” words like gravity, infinity, space, etc. poetically so children can understand them. Their vocabulary will grow extensively by the time they’ve finished the book. Under the guidance of teachers, parents will be especially impressed.

    Dedication

    These poems are dedicated to two wonderful school teachers, JoAnn Wilson and Lisa Elder, and the inquiring minds of children everywhere.

    Last Dance

    39165.png

    Winter called his children,

    "Dear Cold and Wind and Snow,

    the Season’s moving northward, now;

    it’s time for us to go."

    But Snow was not inclined to leave

    and chose to stay behind;

    for warmers days and gentler winds,

    she simply changed her mind,

    and drifted softly, round and down

    in light and downy flakes,

    turning, swaying, spinning; white

    dresses trimmed in lace.

    The frozen earth began to thaw

    as flakes change into rain,

    and Snow fulfilled a pledge to save

    her last dance for Spring.

    Commentary

    39222.png

    When the season changes

    From winter into spring,

    Temperatures drop magically

    and snow turns into rain.

    Clouds

    39280.png

    When the sky grows dark

    in the midst of day,

    and thunder growls,

    in a grumbling way,

    the lightening bursts

    in shards of flame,

    shooting sparks

    at everything.

    It frightens birds

    and critters, too.

    Do clouds have tantrums

    like people do?

    Commentary

    39334.png

    When lightning shoots from cloud to ground, it stretches

    a tunnel through the air, and makes you wonder

    what happens when the tunnel snaps shut and the light

    goes out. It makes a frightful noise, but it’s only thunder.

    A Foggy Day

    39393.png

    I stepped outside

    to walk my dog

    and vanished in

    a cloak of fog!

    It’s spooky quiet,

    everywhere…

    Hello!… Hello!

    Is anyone there?

    Commentary

    39449.png

    Fog is a cloud of water coated

    dust particles nearly on the ground;

    and because of this, it’s hard to see,

    and it’s difficult to get around.

    Mystery

    39504.png

    So much noise

    inside the gym;

    I couldn’t hear

    above the din.

    The children left

    just moments ago,

    but I didn’t see the noises
